Melee retaliate doesn't mean the monster only counterattacks melee attacks. It means they counterattack anything within melee range. You shot it with Mira from 1 space away so it countered you.

Been playing this a bit, and it's a really enjoyable tactical roguelite overall. Beside some balance tweaks, I just wish the metaprogression was a bit lighter, and it was easier to target specific units in crowded grids.

Believe it or not, it wasn't a furry game until the 11th hour of development they decided to redo all the character art. There's trailers where the game is exactly the same but they're all human! (the gameplay is just as good, but I bet the game wouldn't have gotten as noticed)
