Tactical Teamwork: Thinking of Not Just Me (Episode 2)

In my recent movie, Tactical Teamwork, I talked about the broader concept of teamwork and how important it can be to winning games.
Today I want to move away from that broad approach and start looking at specific ways you can be a better teammate. And it all starts with a very simple concept, "Thinking of Not Just Me."
If you think back to when you were brand new to League of Legends -- or maybe you're there right now -- you may recall when you were totally focused on figuring out the ins and outs of your champions, their item builds, and how to improve at them. There was a lot of guesswork because you didn't really know what your opponents could do, and chances are there were a lot of hard lessons as a result of this.
As players improve and gain experience with and against more champions, they begin to think of their opponents. What are their opponents weaknesses and strengths and how can they manipulate them to win their lane and sometimes win the game?
But the most effective players at any skill level are not just thinking about their champion and the enemy team. They're thinking about their own team, both on a mechanical level and on a personal level. And they're making smart decisions based on this team-based outlook.

I disagree with what you said about the first play. amumu really shouldn't have gone back in, it was smart of leona to stand in the way of ryze who was doing the damage, but imo i'd rather give 1 death and bail on someone who gets caught out than go in on a risky play and give a triple kill.

Once you acquire a number of deaths on a late-game, highrisk/highreward champ (i.e. Tryndamere) you can do one of two things: 1) Push all day, creating pressure and preventing your lane from roaming. At the same time, you are getting back into the game. 2) Kill any non-fed people that come to your lane to farm. FWIW, I recently got to Gold after abandoning all types of negative use of the chat box (even responding to negative comments). Obviously, that's not the enitre reason, but it did help.

It's not about the individual plays that happens, it's about the thought process that goes into it. Take the blocking of skillshots for example; the only reason you would think of that is if you know the enemy champions, thus resulting in a somewhat basic but effective example - he isn't showing incredible plays but advising players to take every information that they've acquired in to account.

I love playing support, mostly because if you stay positive in the game, you can have a positive team. Now my secret to how I get a positive ADC, is that I never go soloqueue. I duo with a friend who is my ADC. The secret to winning the game, is to keep everyone tuned positive and let them know, that this is a teamgame. Not only does the support ward and not only should the adc get all the kills. In the end there are two outcomes: 3/5 flame and we lose (bot being positive) or we tactically win!

Teamwork and being able to look beyond just yourself can be pretty different. I mean I can know that Oriana and vlad's ult stack really well together, but I might neglect a scenario like in the video(0:55) where we could of picked up kills.

Also I would like to add when you have a choice (and this happens all the time) that is something like make sure I get the kill on this person that 3 of my teammates will already kill for sure even though I know I will get an assist or just move on and chase the guy who I maybe could have caught, don;t be selfish, just say "ok their dead" and move onto the next target unless you know the kill is FOR you, like maybe if you're an underfed ADC. Assess don't just try to make you KD look good.

It all really depends on people's judgement of if the fight is lost or still could be won. Also it was Amumu's fault for going back in with very little damage himself and also relying on Rumble and Janna of which both were guaranteed to die and leave at least Lucian to take down 2 towers as well.

Only if you're overvaluing the gold from kills. the real strength in lane is the fact that they've died, lost cs, lost xp, and you zone the enermy support\adc(whoever didn't die). You can even create a static spawn for your lane is you play it well(Ie only one in lane at a time). In the end, getting upset because somebody ksd you, only makes you perform worse, and shows that you're not looking at the really strong advantage the kill just got you, rather than that

We managed to win a game which seemed like a loss at first. I was playing Galio, and our Team got pubstomped in Laningphase and we lost every single Teamfight, most of our Towers were gone, 2 Enemy Mid Towers were gone as well. I asked my team to stand behind me as i try a fake AFK Bait. When their Tryndamere got close enough, i flashed into their team and cought all of them with my ult. Immediately i died, but my Team killed all of them, allowing us to push mid to win the game!

I was expecting more on how to play with a team comp. For example: If your support is Leona and your Jungle is Amumu, don't pick Nidalee, as they have to dive, and you can't join them.

The unfortunate reality of League is that many, many people believe themselves to be the best players around. They are always right, which means that YOU are always wrong. It's the nature of a any pick-up game. If you don't know the people you're playing with, you tend to focus on yourself. (Think pick-up basketball where you know no one else on the court.) Here's hoping that we can recognize the problem and address it ourselves, and hopefully that others do the same.

I hate it when my teammates continue to run away when I'm Jax or Lee Sin. One jump would prevent one death and maybe even get us a kill, and they won't even stop for half a second...

Hmm.. first of all. I would recommend you to not focus on your teammates so much. Focus on YOURSELF and on how YOU play. If you stay passive in lane and go even with the enemy, you didn't really do much for your team. You didn't feed, that's nice. But you didn't win. I understand how it feels doing pretty well against a hard counter, but then realizing you're losing the whole game, because of stupid mistakes. However, raging doesn't help. As I said focus on yourself, win lane, carry, win game :)

That's exactly what I'm speaking about. But well, almost every one wards bushes near his lane, to not get ganked. But when the mid/lategame comes, they do not, because the laning is over, so there is no threat of getting 2v1ed on your lane. Therare no wards near baron? Noob support, report. I've been caught in my jungle due to the lack of wards? I won't buy any, I'll just flame the support, and so on, and so on...

Uh, but if the ADC could have easily taken the kill, but the support flashed + auto'd and used a few abilities on it. that it definitly ksing. And regardless of who takes the kill, the lane will be free to farm anyway.

Right and you only control one of them. Why put yourself at risk for a chance to help someone if you don't know whether or not they'll just fuck you over and not make the play? And then they blame you, is the worst part. I blasted my way from Silver 5 to plat by playing like a selfish prick. I get called a dick all the time, being told I could have had kills or save people but the overall trend is that I end up carrying much more effectively if I only worry about me.

The support doesn't need to intentionally not let their adc get fed, like come on, I support a ton and I live off of gps items and assists, the occasional awesome tax, but taking kills on purpose is just ridiculous, when it comes to late game, you wan't your adc fed not you.

Yesterday I win a ranked game with a bad adc. He gave to Graves a lot of kills, we started to rage him because he was so bad, but our Vi said "stop rage and lets win this". We win the game by 4 of us (Nasus, Annie, Vi and me as Leona) we played in team only 4, because the adc it was bad and she only stayed farming ._. she didnt want to buy more AS because she said "its enough with Berserker", look how bad adc she was.

No, you play passively and stop trying to engage against your lane opponent after your first or second death. The best thing you can do when you are behind/gave kills to your enemy is refocus on farming and farm jungle when you push. Every death is due to a mistake you made. Everyone dies on LoL because we are all human (except the Koreans, they are robots), but going 0/5 is usually inexcusable, especially in low elo.

Most of the supports know what playing as a team is, but they are so many ignorant people that just don´t listen to eachother and go alone all the the time and do whatever they want, cause they think they are pro.. Guys if you wanna get out of bronze just listen to your teammates! Work together and win, this is not a 1v1 game it´s a 5v5 game. Have fun playin and remember Work together!

Personally I don't really agree about the Amumu situation in the dragon pit. Sure, they could have picked 2 more kills, but in League of Legends, the purpose of the game is not to kill, but not to die. I rather prefer leave the tank/jungler die and not give two more kills to the carry rather than kill Amumu but feed their carry even more.
