Hey guys, sorry for this long post, but I hope this is a cool April 1st story. I just remembered this was the day in 1998 when I officially ended my Michigan residency and became an official resident of Illinois... and I made the big change to do some fishing.... That April 1st was also a Wednesday. I was in my second semester of law school here in Chicago and was smack in the middle of my Spring Break. The forecast was for sunny skies, a light breeze, and 70 degrees for the high temp. I made the decision; it's time to GO FISHING, and therefore become an Illinois citizen! I left my downtown apartment with all the fishing gear I had in Chicago at that time; a white spinnerbait, a bag of mint-green Powerbait ribbontail worms (no worm hooks), and a chrome & black 1/4 oz. Rattlin' Rapala lipless crankbait, and a spinning rod. I walked through "the Loop" to the State of Illinois Building (the Thompson Center) to get myself two things, an Illinois Driver's License and an in-state fishing license. With both new licenses in hand I walked straight to the Chicago lakefront. After only about an hour of fishing I caught a very nice coho salmon on the Rattlin' Rapala, and as it turns out it was right at the EXACT SPOT where the Illinois state record smallmouth bass was landed and later released this past October. About a half hour before I caught and released the coho some sort of massive trout, looked like a brown trout, chased the white spinnerbait. Quite satisfied, I returned home with a MASSIVE SUNBURN and an appreciation for Chicago's very urban waterfront.

Have you guys ever tried decoy quads for your cover glides? Do you think they would make a difference in this scenario? Also I noticed that Matt you had almost a signature cadence with a double reel chop and double pop of the rod which you stayed with throughout the morning. Did you retrieve that way bc of the baitfish you were trying to mimic and the visibility? In either case I want to practice that cadence and see if my fish in MI will eat it like that here in the next few weeks 😛 Also switched over to braid to leader for this swimbait season! I went with Courtland MasterBraid 80lb and I am very impressed with that braid! You guys should give it a try!

Matt, what handle is that you have on your reel, that single one? I am just getting into swimbait fishing here in central Florida. I was skeptical at first because most of the shad I see are small, and the bass are always eating those small shad. But today I tossed a 6 inch trash fish and landed a 6+ pounder, and my dad used the S-Waiver and had bass hitting it all evening (nothing big yet, but i'm sure they'll come to it) and a nice florida pike. The swimbait/glidebait fishing works!

what is the water temp there? man the water here is still around 54 degrees and fishing kinda slow. Castaic doesn't even open till sunrise sadly.. man you guys are hardcore. nice ones.. you guys own. yes that's so true.. most fish you will catch will not be ones that smash the bait and try to take off.. most bites people probably cant feel period.. I don't even have a super heavy rod and what I do on it.. just to make sure I can feel anything on the line is to keep my index finger right under the line. so even if you have heavier set up you can feel those little movements on the line.. almost like when you have a drop shot and you feel the weight run over a small rock. but ya sometimes even in winter you can have a fish that hit hard. I think when working baits that you constantly reel in though are easier to detect most bites because the rod will at least semi load as you are reeling and hopefully you set the hook, if I miss then. usually ill dead stick it and work it a lot slower short fast twitches ect.. but just not cover as much water, since I know the fish is close and interested.. a lot of times its easier to trick those instead of just reeling like you would when you have no clue if fish are there. not always though. but I would say at least 50% of times if you slow down you can get those to bite again. from my experience in a pressured area. now if you hook it and it get off.. those wont bite again.. at least at this pressured area.
