Coch probably doesn’t remember this but he gave me my first battle-belt back when I was the 3rd phase corpsman, he took pity on me when he saw me at the range shooting with no holster. it had a Sig p226 Safariland holster and I think it was Blackhawk, it was salty so it gave it character, I still have it 😇

When you put me through 3rd phase, I thought the sights on my Sig might have been off. You took my pistol and keyholed two rounds on a black dot, handed it back to me and said, “they look good to me.”

WOW you NAVY BOYS HAVE GREAT STUFF! I HAD OLD Vietnam stuff when my dad was in the Marines. I in listed in 1987-1991. I was Marine Force Recon sniper. We used Allis Web belts that read 1967 or 1968 or 1970 Lol. Web belt with a plastic buckle. 2 M - 1968 plastic canteens, 2 M-14 nylon pouches. M12 nylon holster and M12 mag pouch from 1972. I had a rook sack and butt pack then suspenders with shoulder harnesses. My K-Bar and compass on the shoulder pads. 30 years later you guys have sweet stuff seal! Semper FI Navy!

I really enjoy watching Old Dogs bring out their gear and show the evolution of what they used to carry to what they now carry or their last deployment carry. Did you guys ever have an op where you ran out of ammo? 2-3 pistol mags and 3-4 SMG/M4 mags seems "light". Obviously loadout reflects level of credible intel on potential number of hostiles, and Black Hawk Down situations are rare.

Very cool to see the evolution of gear over the years and how things have changed for better efficiency. Seems like everyone is going more minimal, lightweight, and more modular. And it seems like everyone is moving to Velcro over the molle setup for fast and easy pouch removal. Just set up my own belt and I’m sort of like your “gen 3” setup here with the padded belt, it was cheap, it works, and has held up great so far. Nice to hear from the experts with real world experience! I’ve noticed I prefer more weight on my hips than my shoulders so I am loading up my belt and keeping everything else minimal. Helps if you have back problems. Your hips can take a lot of weight very easily which is why hiking and backpacking backpacks have a very burly hip belt.

Good to know a lot of the "Home Depot work arounds" I have used and seen used in the 3rd world are functional in the worst environments. People talk a lot of trash about DIY, but if you do your research and test your kit, DIY can lead to a better understanding of what you're running and cheap functional gear. The best gear costs a fortune that most dont have. That's no excuse to not have gear at all. It won't have the Crye logo though. I know, bummer.

Being from the 70's and seeing the evolution of gear is awesome. It's not just the weapons but the support gear. We as a society need to pony up for research and development in this area, save our team members lives. We need to remember when this was done with no armor, jury rigged most everything. We've lost to many.
