There is something about the mechanics of a revolver, more involvement in using the gun… u see the cylinder rotate, dropping the cylinder, ejecting shells, you see all the mechanics of the gun, and they r just beautiful compared to semi auto and have a badass factor.

Paul Harrell (and others) have done some testing with .357 magnum vs. 9MM in different barrel lengths. .357 no matter how you look at it is more powerful than 9MM. In fact, Jeff Cooper designed the 10 MM to be comparable to .357 Magnum. Enjoy your content. I'm a retired LEO. I carried a J Frame in my support side front pocket as a back up when I was working. One reason was if my strong hand was disabled or occupied I could draw it, and another was if I was fighting for my primary pistol I could use it to stop the assailants attempt to disarm me.

I appreciate the honest discussion of the revolver. While I have .357sig, .40, 9mm and .380 semi autos, half of my handguns (and all of my carry guns) are revolvers. I appreciate the simplicity, the virtual reliability, the weight and the knowledge that 5, 6 or 7 cartridges should really be enough.
@riptaway
@riptaway Жыл бұрын
Anyone who says "X bullets should be enough" hasn't spent enough time watching real world gun usages. Easy to hit a torso at 10 feet in a climate controlled range while you and the target are not moving around. Also, modern semi auto pistols are as reliable as any revolver, and more reliable than some. And much easier to shoot and more accurate. Just not any good reason to carry a revolver, though I will say some of them are sweet pieces and I wouldn't mind owning them for fun.

Yes I agree and in our real world day to day gun fight 10 times out of 10 most gun fights will end with less than 5 shots to END the fight whether it be in a home defense scenario versus an out and about scenario and the gun fights will be less than 10 yards !!!

@@riptaway Actually, you’re the one who needs to study real-world self defense. If you want to prepare for some Rambo fantasy of hitting moving targets and being in a prolonged gunfight over your wallet, be my guest. My revolvers never ever jam; all my semiautos will jam if I put in a particular loading. They are not easier to shoot and not more accurate. My wife can’t rack a slide most times, but she can shoot my S&W 500. There are also other reasons related to close-quarters self defense as to why revolvers can be a sound choice. Do some research beyond confirming your biases.

Oh my word. Real world says you almost always get it done with 3-5 rounds. The issue is there is an increasing number of multi-perpetrator incidents, and those still ... mostly... get resolved with 5 rounds or less, but there is greater risk of needing more. Sure, sometimes you have 7 guys show up at your home and you go through 15 rounds. That is a thing. It's not common but it IS a thing. Somebody says they are capping themselves at 5 or 6, I have no real argument. They can make their choices. People have been killing people and critters in highly dynamic situations with double action revolvers for over 130 years. It works fine.

Coch, Dorr... I was in BUD/S in late 1970, and got to ST1 in mid-Feb 1971. We'd used COLT 1911ACP and S&W 9mm handguns in BUD/S. But when I got to ST1, I was given a choice of semi-auto pistols and I chose the 1911 because of my familiarity with the weapon. I was issued a revolver as well, and there was only the one choice at that point; it was the S&W K-38 Combat Masterpiece . The model I was handed was stainless, and had a cold weather warfare trigger guard that could be pivoted forward, under the barrel and out of the way for when using the weapon while wearing bulky cold weather gloves or mittens (the kind with the trigger finger separate from the rest of the fingers). The K-38 issue was .38 only... not yet the later-issue .38/.357, and I never ended up using it anywhere but on the range. At that point in time we weren't carrying our own weapons when we attended training hosted by sister service branches at distant locations, like when we attended WINTER MOVEMENT TRAINING at the US Army's Fort Greely, Alaska. We went there to engage in training evolutions involved basic mountaineering/skiing training in the Black Rapids, 'Galloping Glacier' training grounds. When required, we were issued standard M16 service rifles by the Army. In fact that only happened a couple of times. Most of our time at that training location involved training in navigating/traversing through, and surviving for extended periods in a winter/snow environment. You'll find that weapon, although without the pivoting trigger guard, listed (with illustration) on page XII-7 of the original U.S. NAVAL SPECIAL WARFARE TRAINING HANDBOOK NAVEDTRA 38013 which was first issued in 1974 (over 3 years after I'd gotten to ST1). Up until that time we apparently didn't NEED an official training manuals! That may or may not have been linked to the level of secrecy about the unit during the last years of the Vietnam conflict. The public was aware of the UDTs, but even the existence of the SEAL Teams was known to relatively few at that point in time; and we certainly didn't advertise our unit to anyone off-base. There were even men serving in the Navy who were aware of UDTs, but who weren't aware of the SEAL Teams (1&2) until NSW recruiters showed up on their ship or duty station to present a movie (Men With Green Faces) and conduct a Physical Screen Test for potential enrollees.

The small 5 shot .38s are perfect for pocket carry in a pocket holster. Practice with a steel J frame (Mod. 640 or 60) & carry aluminum or polymer (642, 442, LCR). The aluminum in particular aren’t fun to shoot but are easy to carry. The steel frame are easy to shoot but you’ll feel the heavier weight if carried. P.S. I’m a CCWSAFE member. I did the math. It’s the best deal for me.

Back in the day when I was a State Trooper for Maryland I was sent to the US Secret Service Academy for an intense two weeks course of Firearms Instructor training. Soon after graduation MSP transitioned from Colt O.P. 6” revolvers shooting 158 grain ball ammunition to S&W Mdl 13 .357 magnum 4” revolvers shooting the controlled expansion 115 grain Treasury round. I had a couple of my Troopers that had a problem with qualifying with the new revolvers. I purchased a S&W Mdl 18 with 4” barrel and two speed loaders. The Mdl 18 is chambered in .22 long rifle. I had my problem children shoot our qualifying course several times with the model 18. Once they became proficient with the model 18 I would switch guns and make them shoot the course at least three times to qualify. My plan worked and I’ve been plinking with that model 18 for the last 40+ years. My point is anticipating a shot is one of the worst habits a shooter can have.

My first EDC was a Taurus Model 85. All the micro 9s make it hard to justify these days, though. I do carry a snubnose in a jacket pocket on occasion bc a good hammerless can cycle while being fired in a pocket. But revolvers for me are to use for hunting or wild animal defense. Five powerful cartridges hanging on your hip or chest is really nice.

I started on a wheelgun in the AF then in LE. Even after going to pistols, I continued to carry a revolver as a bug. As I prepare to retire after 30 years, I’m still relying on a revolver. It’s cool to see that it wasn’t only pilots and security police that carried revolvers. I hadn’t heard that SEALS used revolvers. The 686 wasn’t introduced until around 1980, so it wouldn’t have been the gun issued in the origins of the SEAL Teams. The photo shown at 6:04 is not a 686. It has a smaller under lug. It could have been a model 66 which came out in about 1970. Prior to 1970, it would have been the model 19 or the larger model 27.

Just got my first center fire revolver the other day after shooting for a little over 50 years and I'm hooked by the simplicity and reliability. What you said about guns (all equipment ) being "tools", I first witnessed this perspective at the SIG Academy during a shotgun (pistol secondary) instructor class about 10 years ago where there was a SF guy in addition to all the Cops and me the ex-Navy CIV. The SF guy shot range guns while I and most of the Cops used our own guns. I got to know him a little and realized he only cared just about the weapons working when needed and almost nothing about how much glitter they had. While I still appreciate a nice looking gun, It changed my perspective.

I’ve carried an LCR in .38 as a backup and off duty for 13 years. Off duty, I pretty much exclusively carry in a pocket holster, with a couple speed strips. I even carry a micro 9 in a pocket holster and it works great. Pocket carry is the sh!t. Always comfortable, always there, never have to worry about your shirt riding up and accidentally exposing your gun or retaining it during open hand techniques. It also means I’m armed from the moment I put on my pants, even just doing chores around the property. Only compromise, really, is draw speed, but you factor that into your decisions and accept it. Glad to see Coch repping revolvers and pocket carry. ❤

We live in the country, and the wife LOVES her Ruger revolver. It's loaded with alternating rounds of rat shot and hollow points. The first round is rat shot, which has been used multiple times to dispatch snakes. If a Texas wild boar is headed her way, if the rat shot doesn't scare it away, maybe the solid bullet will do so? Ditto for any unexpected burglars or self-defense scenarios. I can't say that we support "warning shots." That first round of rat shot to pepper them is the closest thing they will get to a warning shot. Wife has bad eyesight AND seriously bad arthritis. She used to have a CZ semi-auto magazine pistol. But, she can no longer load the mags herself, nor pull the slide back. Whereas, the revolver is literally drop-in loading (easy.) I also installed a laser-grip, so aiming is EASY for her as well. Just put the dot on the snake, and pull the trigger. Ya'll talk a lot about San Diego and city/metro use & self defense. I just thought I'd share a country-girl's perspective on the mag-fed slide-actions, vs old-fashioned revolvers. Peace.

The Air Force was using Revolvers all through the 80's. The Marine Corps still had 38 revolvers at the embassy's in the 90's. The small revolver is a great backup gun to have on you. Once again the fastest reload is drawing another gun. I've seen them in handcuff case. The jam that kills the revolver is a raised primer. I had that happen to me once. Also the S&W revolvers you can get the smoothest trigger than any pistol. Also if you want a hand cannon or mounting a scope for hunting the revolver is the way to go. Great Video!!!

Don't forget, the revolver can shoot from inside a jacket, bag or backpack. They can be fired in direct contact. They can't be limp wristed, can fire from any angle, easy manual of arms under stress or with a less experienced shooter. I carry 2 6 shot snubs, same model. 3in on hip, 2in cross draw (can be drawn by support hand). Speedloaders are the same, extra speed strips (using NeoMag add on). I do not feel under gunned. If needed, I add one on the ankle. I think revolvers are still a viable option for concealed carry, extreme close quarters (inside a car), deep cover (when high firepower is needed) and for shield work... Not so much for duty or combat. Thanks for the video.

Agreed. Transitioning my carry to two revolvers as we speak. For nearly the same reasons. My duty guns are high capacity semis, but my carry requires a different set of perameters, and twin wheelguns give me all the firepower I need, while balancing my hips, which happens to mean a great deal in my line of work. Use what you know, and know what works for you. Fitz Special was created by a man who habitually carried twin revolvers, long after semi autos were common. It's funny how many gun fads have come and gone in my lifetime. But two things that have never changed are reliability and accuracy.

I remember as I read Marcinko's "Rogue Warrior" that he mentioned trying out stainless steel S&Ws because they didn't rust with saltwater and of course reliability. Don't remember if he was referring to the 686, tho.

I remember Rogue Warrior. Seal 6 was using S&W 66s, the stainless version of the Model 19 - for the reasons you reported. I still imagine that Seal sidearms, even the stainless wheel guns got cleaned after ever op as salt water will still cause stainless to rust, it just takes a bit longer to take hold. But, yes,I thought it was interesting that Seals were still deploying with stainless revolvers.

I like a tool that runs solely off my trigger finger. Revolvers are a mechanical device that is NOT dependent on perfect, proper ammo or perfect grip. God bless John Browning and Glock, but I'm a wheelgun guy. I don't recall any deer or elk that hit the ground and then complained there wasn't enough magazine capacity in my handgun.

The point about .357 being kind of a waste out of a short barrel got me thinking about my 4” barreled .44 mag I carry for bear protection in Alaska, definitely has a fireball, makes me glad I’ve never needed to use it.

I never stop loving revolvers and still own, carry and shoot many of them. Back when I started over 40 years ago you were a 1911 .45, Browning Hi-Power and or a S&W/Colt revolver guy. That still holds true today even though I later added high capacity DA/SA wonder 9s and a bit later polymer framed striker fired pistols. I still won't give any of them up as it is part of my journey and history. These days they come out with a polymer striker fired 9mm almost every week so it seems. People lose their minds over it. I'm like "meh...whatever" because of all the classics in my arsenal. These new pistols are boring and just copies of the copies to me anymore. Now a 1973 Colt Detective Special, 1977 S&W Model 49 Bodyguard, 1977 S&W Model 10-8, S&W Model 66, S&W Model 686, S&W Model 36, S&W Model 60, S&W Model 638 Air Weight Bodyguard, S&W Model 29 etc etc....those aren't "boring". Likewise for 1911 .45s, Browning Hi-Powers, Sig Sauer P-220s, P-226/Mk25s, P-228/M11 A1s, P-229s, CZ-75Bs, HK P7 PSP/ HK P7 M8/M13s etc etc.

And yes those vintage revolvers got the job done back then and still can get it done today and I wouldn't hesitate to use my frankenstein post war 1952 Smith & Wesson Regulation Police .38s&w caliber as a edc gun at all with its 5 shot 4 in. barrel I can't miss my target unless I did so on purpose !!!

Short barrels don't negate the ballistic advantage of magnums. Though the gain may be less than with longer barrels but it is still significant. There are valid reasons to favor the specials especially in the short barrel guns but lack of ballistic benefits to the magnums is not it. Recoil and blast are the relevant factors.

A good point highlighted in this video is how rare it is to be in a situation where a snub nose wouldn't save you but a high capacity 9mm with a red dot would. The whole semi automatic vs revolver debate circles around capacity and statistics yet no one ever mentions how rare it is to A.) ever need more than 5 or 6 shots and B.) the odds you wouldn't have time to reload. If you factor those two into all citizen involved shootings, you are talking about a fraction of a percent of instances where a semi auto would save you and a revolver wouldn't

Long live the snubby! I'll never give up my S&W M&P 340...best and comfiest EDC. Get some S&W rubberized combat grips for the 340. They cover the backside of the frame so it doesn't hammer the hand on the .357 mag, and very conceal friendly.

Love me my wheel guns (just like I love my lever guns and manual transmissions). They might not be first choice go to, but they’re still tools that can do the job if that’s what you got when it’s needed. I love that tactical 686 holster and wish I could get one for my TRR8 (and that they made real speed loaders to go with it).

Love 5 shot 442 as backup guns and for home carry. But for ccw outside my home I want at least a glock 19 size 9mm,40, 45 pistol. Preferably full size most days. 6 or even 7 rounds of double action just is too far behind the curve. A 442 airweight in my weak side pocket is an awesome backup when I feel the need.

There are some companies out there now making ammo optimized for short barrels like snubbies. There's no worry about not getting the full potential any more with them. That doesn't make the 340PD any more comfortable to shoot, though, unfortunately.

When I got out.. I felt I HAD to have a 1911 and an M9. They're what I knew well. Years went by.. decades. Carpal Tunnel surgery. Trigger finger release surgery. Trigger finger knuckle replacement joint. Fractured radius and ulna. Arthritis. I picked up that little Smith. I stow it in my jacket pocket. Don't even plan on pulling it out. Just shoot through the fabric. I don't have time to f around anymore with a bunch of hokey slides and switches and buttons and mags. I get my coats at the Goodwill anyways.

Great video! Moonclips to fire acp is not a great idea in my experience. I had trouble keeping them from bending or warping when removing the spent case and new replacements are not cheap. Yes, I bought a tool to unload them and it helped a little. Loading a bent clip into a revolver increases the likely hood the pistol will will not cycle or fire properly is my experience.Thanks for sharing guys. I enjoyed this.

My buddy bought a PCC a short barrel Kriss vector ,added a red dot ,He is late mid eighties born , me Im early 70s Gen X .He has used Da 642s but not a Sa/DA or a SA at all .. I brought a 4 inch 357 with a 2-3 lb SA and smooth da 8 lbs and yellow paint on the ramp ,,, Targets went out to 20 yards .. he shot , I then took my time with smooth and fast SA shots ,,, My six were better than his magazine of shots , I without a word moved the revolver and mixed speed strips with both 357 and 38 rounds , to his table He hand me his Kriss and magazines and a couple boxes of 50 9mm ,, I pulled out some 9mm boxes slid a box of 9mm back , ,Showed him the fine points of speed strips and some basic weaver stance with and without a small flashlight I pair with the revolver at home We nodded, no words and used the others gun for next hour ,,On the ride back I explained the Cops of old and SA shots were the norm Three month later .he now owns a 44 mag snub revolver and is hitting tight bulls ,,, Is talking getting a lever action in 44 ,He isnt abandonning his semi auto or the Kriss but has a liking for sa/da revolvers and wants to pair a Hunting /defense rifle like his Pcc and semi autos

When I first got out the Regular Army the first time I really didn't shoot handguns very much until I got my first civilian job as an armored car guy. In my company we were armed with S&W Model 10s or 15s in .38 SPL. I knew how to shoot a revolver because my Dad owned a S&W Model 15. After 2 weeks of orientation on the job I had to qualify and I chose the Model 15. We had a police sergeant who taught us and qualified us. This guys Sgt. Kim was an amazing instructor I learned quickly how to load and fire during that 8 hour mandatory instruction. We had 60 rounds of practice then 30 rounds on qualification. Practice and qualification was an 8 inch NRA target at 25 yards with no time limit but we were encouraged to reload and fire quickly and we shot in single action to get the best accuracy and qualify. We had 15 guys in our class from Loomis Armored Car and my company Security Armored Car. Only 5 guys qualified the first time which I was one of them. The rest of the guys took at least twice to qualify which one of them was my supervisor. My supervisor asked me to stay and shoot right next to him on his 2nd qual to coach him for confidence. He finally qualified shooting even better because I had talked to him and coached him as we shot together. I got even a better score the 2nd time. Those were some of my best memories.

I remember as a kid watching that French raid on the airline that got hijacked in Paris and they were using pistols (357?) and I was like whoa! That’s fucking cool. Bam bam bam. All dead. We were in a plane just landed nearby when it happened and saw the whole thing play out in real time. They raided the plane w mobile staircases and had a hard time getting those doors open but once inside it was all over quickly. The revolver surprised me even as a kid I knew they’d better not miss a shot, but it t would be reliable in a hotspot.

Advantages of a revolver: 1. Unless something catastrophic occurs, they don't jam. 2. Simple to load and unload. 3. Minimal strength required to load or unload 4. Very simple manual of arms. If I had to choose one handgun for the zombie uprising, it would be a .357 Mag revolver
