In this video, retired Navy SEAL and our Director of Training, Dorr, talks about the two ways he likes to draw a pistol from a holster.
One holster draw technique deals with close-quarters combat, while the second variation is better suited for taking shots when you have time and space, and improved accuracy is important.

Getting your pistol pointed downrange as soon as possible is an often overlooked training point when it comes to "CQB" draws, same with having your non-primary hand available for unarmed combatives. Good on you guys for teaching that and putting it in a video.

Thanks Dorr ,. I think both techniques could be warranted depending on the situation, how close you are to the contact, I think the second technique is probably for more accurate shots when the situation requires more accurate shots like Police Officers face on a daily basis. I've watched a few videos where Police Officers are forced into using deadly force , usually it's so lightning quick it's hard to see exactly what method is used . ALOT OF MUSCLE MEMORY, which is alot of practice, repetition !

This is meant more for combat situations than competition situations, right? I practice getting my support/control hand over to my holster as soon as I draw. It makes the draw and presentation faster but leaves you vulnerable if someone is coming at you. Is that right?

The “high ready” with the barrel pointed up is slower to get back on target than “low ready” (barrel tipped downward slightly).

Nice, detailed info! I used to train a combination of these, actually.. so the quick draw / hip-shot position, then up to chest level, then up&straight forward from there. The reasoning was that in a continuous shooting situation you could actively move the pistol towards "better aim" while being engaged. Any thoughts on this?

Thats all well & good,but you neglected going over anything about making sure you properly seat the pistol in the notch of your hand before you even draw the gun from the holster. During the downward motion to grip the firearm(while still in the holster),slightly pushing down on the gun to drive the backstrap & beavertail firmly into the notch of your hand as you're wrapping your fingers around the grip,then drawing the pistol & bringing it up to center & pushing out as you showed in the video. The reason I bring this up is if someone isn't very experienced w/a handgun they may hurriedly draw the pistol,not have it seated well,& have to fumble w/getting it locked in high & tight on the beavertail & grip as you're pushing the gun out to fire,costing yourself time you may not have to lose

Great question. I do use pistol lights Solly. I have several of them to choose from. I’m just wearing a range teaching belt set up. No light needed.

Hello Eric, The second draw is for far away targets that require more precision. In order to achieve this I alter my draw to get my eyes aligned with the sights faster. This allows me to engage more effectively at a further distance in a shorter amount of time. Hope this feels better.
