To be fair, aren’t the subliners living in Texas? Dallas to be exact. They’re not even based on New York themselves, so might as well get rid of the geolocation and just make the team Cloud9. This also opens the door for faze to be Faze Clan again and OpTic to be OpTic Gaming. Other orgs might follow and lose the geolocation as a whole. It’s cool to have that represent a part of the country where you might be from but it also shuts off potential fans who are NOT from that location.

OpTic fan pre CDL, but became a Subliners fan before MW19 because I'm from NY. Will be personally sad to see geolocation go if it does, but I also understand it's probably for the betterment of the league.

I think opinions on city based teams depends on a viewers personal walk of life. Being a New Yorker and being a Yankee fan since I came out the womb (😂), I’m naturally going to root for NYSL because I was personally raised on city based sports teams before E-Sports was ever even a thing. If there was no NY in Subliners, I’m not sure I would have ever stuck around to watch the CDL because I wouldn’t have cared enough to watch to see which team I liked more.

Same here with Toronto. Being a Toronto sports fan first, and only really knowing OpTic and FaZe in COD esports before, it really helped having a "home team" to root for. And it didn't hurt that they played decently in the early CDL days and are finally top tier now. I hope they keep the NY even if it's not "Subliners" for you guys. Y'all have the vibey-est intro for the Subliners too...

I got into pro COD with MW2019, and not knowing much about anything, and being English, having a team that was based in London or at least represented London was fun for me. I had someone to support, and they were good fun to watch during MW2019 and Vanguard! Now they’re not London anymore Im not fussed about them. The city based franchising had its benefits for sure.

There are advantages to geolocation for me as the fan and for the league as a whole. What are the advantages of getting rid of that? I see absolutely none. It seems nostalgia is the only reason to get away from it. It’s easy for a new fan to just attach to their hometown and then figure out if they like it later. This gets them involved in the league quicker and takes the onus off of them to research and watch religiously etc. Anything else causes unneeded confusion and a knowledge gap that simply doesn’t need to exist. If there are region locks that could definitely be taken away, but going to random names like “cloud 9” seems unnecessary and unwarranted. I’d be willing to bet that OpTic’s fan base success has its roots in having had location names attached for a long time. $.02.

Rab and others won't admit it, but their view on this is purely nostalgia based. They miss the glory days of optic gaming, which is pre CDL era. Optic Texas has been for the most part a perpetual failure and they despise the CDL era for it.

Toronto is one of the only ones who have actually done well with the city-based stuff. But it's hard to do it for other teams when their city-based team is actually located in Texas. I hope Toronto keeps "Toronto Ultra" even if it's not going to be followed by the other teams. They've done a really good job converting fans, all of the players who move in end up loving the city (Zinni constantly says it's one of his fave cities, etc) and they constantly put out a good Major every year.

It'll be done yearly. Doesn't make sense for esports tournaments to be spread out the way traditional sports are since its not as physically taxing and the regular seasons aren't as long

Tough times tbh. We all want more teams and it wouldn't be right to force them to keep a city name they aren't based in. But at the same time I think as the comments show, having city based leagues allows all the other teams in the league to have fans too. Instead of how it used to be super lopsided with like 2 or 3 teams having the majority of the fans and the other teams had like their family's cheering for them only lol

Im not convinced there is enough talent to really support more teams tbh, im all for it, but like ye its just gonna mean more boston vs lag instead of more ultra vs faze which is ideally what youd want.

Sure the teams may not be a top 4 team but in a one of series, any team upset and that one loss could determine if a team makes it to bracket. That’s been my whole outlook on it

This is definitely so they can establish a Club for the EWC. The prize structure has spots for "clubs" where if an Org wins in multiple titles they get a bonus prize.
