Time for an oldie but a goodie - I have a soft spot for this old handgun, and it's about time I tell you a little bit about it! Usually the heavy synth and the tactical gear in the intros always give off this 'cyberpunk apocalypse' vibe, but the delicate piano and leather jacket with fur lining just make me feel like I'm watching a drama about an Eastern European female spy that will end in tragedy. Love the work on the atmosphere of the intros!

I saw the listing for 7.62 Tokarev ammo and was interested in it, so I read about the gun. I got a Polish Tokarev pistol myself, and I do like it. I wish the grip was longer and so I'm keeping an eye out for a nice M57, as well. Still, fun gun, but as you noted nothing I'd really want to depend on to protect myself.

Holy fucking shit, the Tokarev is my one true love. Got mine handed down to me from my great uncle who was a Ukrainian cowboy. It really is one of those pistols that just screams cool for me, it doesn't have a hammer spur so you can spin it like a revolver, and with the half-cock you can also fan the first shot. Put mine in a nickel finish with a laser, was thinking about putting an RMR on it but couldn't bring myself to mess up that beautiful profile, use it with the extended Zastava mags now. A 20 minute video on it is like catnip for me, thank you for showing your love for it as well!

- [02:14] 🛠 The Tokarev TT33 is the oldest handgun in the speaker's collection, with significant personal and historical significance. - [03:03] 📜 The TT33 was developed in 1930 by Fedor Tokarev for the Soviet military, intended to replace the Nagant M1895 revolver. - [04:01] 💥 The TT33 uses the 7.62x25mm Tokarev round, known for its high velocity and armor-piercing capabilities. - [07:03] 🎯 The TT33 features a single-stack eight-round magazine and a single-action trigger with no double-action capability. - [09:29] 🛑 The TT33 lacks a safety feature, with the only safety being a half-cock hammer position. - [10:05] 🎮 The TT33 trigger has a simple but surprisingly crisp design, contributing to its mass-production viability. - [12:00] ⚡ The TT33's iron sights are small and not forgiving, making quick sight acquisition challenging compared to modern handguns. - [11:42] 🔃 Reloading the TT33 is slow and can be inconsistent due to its lack of a flared magwell and small mag release. - [13:28] 🔄 Modifications to the TT33 include replacing the grips, adding a compensator, and removing the import safety feature. - [16:01] 🔫 A comparison between the TT33 and a modern Glock 19 in a build drill highlights the advantages of modern handguns for defensive purposes. - [18:00] 🤔 The speaker emphasizes the importance of prioritizing modern handguns for self-defense over historical firearms like the TT33.

I ccw a tokarev that ive done a lot of work to. I've gone through several carry guns before deciding on the tokarev. I dehorned a yugo m57 and set it up for point shooting (trained with it a lot for point shooting), put one of those rubber angled grips that has a beavertail on it for better ergonomics, polished the internals, swapped in an original trigger and cut it shorter so it sits flush when fully depressed, swapped in a new chrome lined barrel, swapped in a new american made and stronger firing pin, cut the hammer so it is almost flush with the slide and welded the spring hole back up then filed notches so you can still operate it even though it is almost flush, and the part that really catches people offguard. I got an aluminum replica of the underbarrel shotgun from the kingsman movie but made specifically so it can not fire regular shotgun shells so it is not classified as a sbs. I set it up to use AEA defender/ harpoon air shells. 5000psi and either a .72 slug or copper shot. Both proved to be very effective on denim wrapped watermelons at close range. The undermounted launcher is for when someone closes distance to knife range or close enough to take your gun faster than you can draw you at least have essentially a slightly weaker 12 gauge slug you can fire from the hip at point blank without aiming. Those AEA shells are very potent out of longer barrels but out of essentially no barrel it's like firing a 410 slug pistol but with a lead grabe flying out of it. Enough to get the job done. The whole reason I went for this setup is cause it's very thin but long enough for point shooting easily while being fairly light weight and not printing on my medium size frame where my ria stk100 weighs double and prints terrible. Glocks and similar clones carry a much higher capacity but the odds of my needing to use my concealed carry are slim and the odds of being in a scenario where you need more than 10 rounds and a shotgun shell is even more slim so I'm happy with my choice that I tailor made for my use case. To each their own...the best thing you can do is find the gun that you feel the most comfortable with and you can shoot effectively.

Loved my Zastava M57. I put a comp on mine as well and it shot really good. Not bad for a $200 surplus gun from the 1960s. I also put some different magazine base plates on that would allow me to snatch the mags out of the rubber wrap around grip. I did remove the magazine disconnect safety so I could easily dry fire with it as well. Mine had a broken sear retaining pin but was an easy fix. Had a pretty good trigger with a very short reset. Great video as always

I have a Tokarev and Makarov shelf in the gunroom. Most all were bought back when I was in university, back when I could pick one up with the same money going out to the bar/club would cost me on a Friday night. Instead of blowing money on over priced drinks, I would go to the gunstore and get some new Comblock surplus, and stay at home cleaning off the cosmoline...most likely while watching Stargate or BSG lol. Honestly, great memories with all my old guns. Actually bought my Zastava M70 while in a Moscow hotel room too (long story). I would say the Polish Wz33 has the highest quality fit & finish of the Tokarevs. Actually found this video googling for Polish Tok stuff since a fresh batch came into my gunshop this week, but they sure aren't $200 any longer! cheers

11:22 Theres a video i believe called "tokarev sticky mag fix" you can watch that involves bending the mainspring. That same flat metal spring adds tension to the magazine. Bend enough to where it hides just behind the frame and no more to help drop free. I feel the main issue or symptom your having just like mine with ripping certain mags out is the right plastic grip with the rivet possibly sticking out too much causing unwanted friction. To verify take the grips off then insert the mag that gives you trouble, when you hit the mag release and it drops free but doesnt when you assemble the right grip. Its more likely that rivet sticking out. 180 grit sandpaper and little bit at a time checking in between so your not taking too much off. Take the mag that gives you the most trouble to go by. Visible signs for ex is the center scratch on the side of the mag. That was my issue and all my mags now drop freely. It use to be 3 mags somewhat worked then the fourth was a nightmare to pull out. I hope this helps you or anyone else. Any questions let me know or take it to a qualified gunsmith to know your issue. Love your videos

So, I can't say I've ever shot any handgun because I live in Great Britain but I did shoot a BSA Martini International Mk.II when I was shooting in university. It is a martini action target rifle and was made in 1954 and I don't think many Americans have heard of. It has the advantage compared to a bolt action target rifle that the action is shorter and thus the chamber is closer to the shooter. As a result one can reload without moving one's elbows. Also it could chuck brass quite far if one tried.

It's worth to mention that Yugoslavia didn't produce a licensed copy of the Tokarev but I'd say an improved version. Tito and the Soviets didn't see eye to eye so that's why Zastava didn't produce a straight up copy, either Tito didn't wanna get the license or the Soviets didn't wanna give it out The biggest difference IMO between normal Tokarevs and the Zastava M57, as you pointed out, is that the M57 has one more round in the mag and longer grips. TT 33 can take the M57 mags so everything around the mag is the same but obviously the normal TT 33 mags can't reach all the way into the M57 (insert size joke). And guys from where the gun was made can actually put all 3 fingers around the grip with the M57 lol The front sight is adjustable left to right The M57 has a captive recoil spring while the TT 33 doesn't which is more convenient when disassembling and reassembling the gun The firing pin retaining mechanism is different. While in TT 33 it's a retainer pin going through the firing pin, with M57 it's changed completely. The reason why Zastava decided to change the design is to remove the semicircular cutout that the TT 33 has, but the downside is that a lot of people find the M57 more finnicky to reassemble. This was seen as a necessary evil because the most common issue with TT 33 (and other Tokarevs) was that firing or retaining pins broke And lastly, even if the bullet doesn't penetrate the soft 3A armor the broken ribs could penerate heart and lungs, and the 7.62x25 is a powerful round. Wear plates guys

I need a Tokarev in my life. I have a twisted impulse to turn one into a 'race gun' just as a goof, but it would be nice to have a standard one for the history. I do already have a 7.62x25 handgun, a CZ52. That's another interesting gun. Years ago I got ahold of some Czech ammo with pointed FMC bullets. It seemed unusually hot and we chronographed it. It was loaded with a 95gr PFMC bullet that was going 1600 fps! I stopped shooting them. Thanks for showing these cool old guns.

On the mags not dropping freely, I've found that on mine at least, certain mags had followers that were slightly out of spec. Follower too large or misshaped that were getting hung up internally on the frame or the trigger block safety that was added for import.

Tokarev is a hella fun cartridge, recoils like 115 9mm but barks like an AK. TTs manage the length of the cartridge well and generally fit the hand nicely. I've seen exactly one madlad mill off the front sight and dovetail it for proper irons, but that juice just isn't worth the squeeze if you have to pay for the work. Commercial Zas guns with the slide safety are the only Toks I'd trust to carry cocked, and even then they only block the firing pin if memory serves, they don't disable the trigger. Unfortunately they aren't nearly as common to see in stores as they were a decade ago. The Chinese import safeties aren't confidence-inspiring, but they do at least look like they belong on the guns unlike those commonly found on the Romanian and Polish imports

Good stuff, I just came across this awesome video and channel here on KZbin land! Being that I am a firearms aficionado, a specialty bullet series inventor with a military and civil law enforcement career background for both the USA, and Estonia. I've used a variety of firearms during both my dual military and civil law enforcement careers. I carried the TT33 762x25 pistol, in my Estonian Military Police Service time, as well as the PM Makarov, Glock 17, a S&W 44 magnum revolver. The TT33 is actually one of my favorite carry pistols. While the Polish version of the TT pistol is probably the best in overall quality, I prefer the larger Yugoslavian M57 with its larger longer grip frame. As a result of my experiences with EDC of the 762x25 TT', I know that the TT pistol is a good, effective, practical design, and being that is still widely in use in our modern era times, I am in the process of designing a Flat Nose Bullet for the 762x25 caliber. Yes indeed in the 1930's and during WW2 the Soviet firearms designers came out with a prototype pistol in the 762x25 caliber in a large Walther type PP pistol as well as a double stack magazine version, however the furthering of these pistols was interrupted by the second world war. The Soviet Makarov PM pistol is overall inferior to the TT33 design. However, the Makarov Pistol and 9x18 caliber was chosen to replace the TT33 in 762x25 caliber for several reasons. One major reason of why the 9x18 caliber was chosen over the over the 762x25, was the over penetration of the 762x25 rounds. Other mitigating factors for choosing the 9x18 Makarov was suppressing the access of abundance, the saturation availability of both the 762x25 and other common caliber firearms such as the 9x19 in the aftermath of WW2, to the anti Soviet freedom fighters like the Forest Brothers in the Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and in Romania, thus to control, to limit the logistical availability of ammunition that the anti communist freedom fighters and the later NATO Defensive forces could get their hands on and use against the sinister Soviet Communist forces. Please do keep up the good work and videos coming!

Maybe a quick detach bearing based connector and it's female opposite could be used to retain the Tokarev via the lanyard loop? The ones for slings can be costly and larger than necessary, the ones for fishing rods like a ProLogic quick detach connector could be used with matching threaded hoop end bolts, or similar, also a bit cheaper than a sling QD connector can be.

Great video! The only nice thing about those silly trigger-dingus safeties is that they allow the pistol to be imported into the US without drilling a hole in it to install an even more horrible frame safety. Just replace the trigger, and you have an original configuration Tokarev. They're great old pistols. Like a lot of antiques, they would probably still be better than a sharp stick for defensive use today - some are currently in use in Ukraine and Syria - but like you say, a good modern pistol with a RDS will probably not be much more expensive.

@@pastorclay82 a PPSH is like 9.5 lbs loaded, closer to 10 with a drum. It weighs more like a Garand than an M1 carbine. The Czech SMGs are closer, but they're still pretty chunky. The Bison fits the bill, but from everything I heard, the helical mag wrecks the balance, and is pretty unreliable. Now, an MP7 or a P90 in 7.62TT would be very interesting. Or, a SITES Spectre.

Hey about the reloads, I heard there are some 3D printable magwell for TT-33 that are good, I'm not sure if it fits all variants or if it is just for airsoft (it's not very easy or likely that you gonna see people carrying around in my country, so I found those looking for airsoft replicas), but it is worth giving it a shot I guess

With modern diy methods, I wonder how hard it would be to make a modern pistol in this caliber. Given the case diameter I suspect 9mm or 10mm magazines could be used. The barrel would be likely be the most annoying part, a manufacturer would need to do a run of them; I doubt there's a surplus of barrels for these things. Good video as always

Excellent video! Sweet outfit! I got a early model (Russian-made) Soviet-era TT-33 and I really enjoy shooting it (surplus ammo is cheap!). Almost everything you described in this video applies to my version. But one point I do need to add: There is NO MAGAZINE SAFETY on the older-model TT-33s. I'm not sure if it's a Russian thing, or a time period thing, but the original model Tokarevs have no magazine safety or mechanical safeties built into them whatsoever. All you can do is put the hammer on half-cock (as you said in the video). As you pointed out, Polish models & M57s have magazine safeties installed. I don't know if older models from those countries might be different. I also don't know if later Russian-made models included them. But the early Russian models have no magazine safety whatsoever. So if you're going to get one of these pistols, verify for yourself before loading it with live rounds!

Russian TTs never had a mag disconnect safety, nor did Polish. She was referring to the manual thumb safety that was added for import reasons on the WZ33. To the best of my recollection, only Yugo/Zastava installed mag disconnect safeties on their Tokarevs. This goes for the original M57, the M70, and the M88 series.

The M57 has dovetailed sights, and zastava USA offers night sights for the M57, M57A, M70A, M70AA, M88, and M88A. You can remove the magazine safety by prying it out. I carry the 9mm M70AA. It has the slide safety. There's no half cock, but the safety blocks the firing pin.

I can smell the fresh dookie in Garand Thumb's pants. Put there, of course, by the fire ass jacket AND that cold blooded compensator. I disagree somewhat with your position that its not a good EDC. I've gotten hot with one while dealing and as soon as ops hear the pops of the surplus Tokarev round, they jump and run like a 357 mag is hunting for them. But to respect your point when I bought the crappy piece of old trash it would cycle maybe 3 rounds before jamming. I had to carefully file down some jagged areas on the slide to get it to run.

I've got a Zastava M70, which is basically a mini Tokarev in 32 ACP. Fun range gun, but wouldn't be as viable to use for self defense vs almost any striker fired 380 or 9mm. Took a lot of mineral spirits and eventually boiling the slide in water to get all the cosmoline out.
