The first one I ever saw was made out of regular paper. Chances are that if you go for harder paper you'll have more of a challenge getting it to curl correctly. Construction paper thickness is probably pressing the limits on how thick you can go, while regular A4 printer paper presses on thinness limitations. Then again, this tends to be the case for most Origami models from my experience.

Not sure if you figured it out yet, but actually it should be made using either 12 units or 30. Squares surrounded by triangles or Pentagons surrounded by triangles. In yours, it looked like there were "holes" in it because 18 units doesn't complete a real geometric sphere.

you can useually find origami paper at any arts and crafts store such as hobby lobby for about 5 or 6 dollars a pack
