Hello Ladies, I agree with you, this video is gorgeous. The visuals are dark and haunting, and the choreography is sizzling and seductive. Taemin has been in his very own lane for a long time. I mean, he's king of his lane and in a league of his own. This video is awesome, but what really gave me goosebumps was Taemin's high notes in this song, especially at 1:25 and 2:45 His vocals on those 2 particular parts of the song really echoed in my soul. I could truly feel his vocals deep inside me. I play those 2 parts many times. Taemin's vocals are sensuous, thrilling, alittle naughty, and angelic at certain times. HE has such an ethereal, out of this world kind of appearance and body movement, it's intriguing and captivating the way he carries himself during his choreography. He's a brilliant and beautiful performer, in my opinion. With all of that being said, I heard from others, that this particular song is about Stockholm Syndrome.... Anyway, great reaction, Ladies. Yes indeed, Taemin is like I’ve always said and will keep on saying, the best performer in K-pop. He always leaves me in awe after a performance, this man just doesn’t know how to bring a boring stage!!!! Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reason's why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two performers in the industry, and why he was made a member of SuperM. Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists in Korea, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which starts with his prologue "2 Kids" and continues with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. He will release Act 2 next -- we are still waiting to see what the next piece will be. As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. ‘2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of "2 Kids" as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. He is being held captive by the criminal who is the girl he is singing about. The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by the girl to the point where you are suffering from stockholm syndrome and you have now fallen in love with the person who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on you. Even though you are being abused by that person you can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc. :D To really appreciate the choreography in "Criminal" you have to watch Taemin's dance practice for the song. You will be even more blown away when you see the dance in its entirety without any cuts. This choreography is truly Taemin at his best. Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography. His dance style is similar to Michael Jackson in the way he captivates an audience and conveys story and emotion through movement to compliment his music and the visuals but also as a standalone. The more and more we dive into this kpop genre the more and more the word “k-pop” feels to generic. The way you’ve described his body of work sounds and feels like art and we cannot wait to dive into him and his work some more. Chances are that Özlem has already seen everything and Esosa will be discovering new things but both will be equally blown away. One for the first time and the other once again. I know you can listen to like one or two songs from a singer or group and get the gist of their sound but with BTS, their discography is so varied that you need to listen to a variety of the music to get who they are. As SUGA (one of the BTS members) once said: "I’m a little careful to talk about K-pop as a genre, because I don’t want to be defining Kpop as a genre. Trust me. This entire album is a MASTERPIECE! The concept for this MV is Stockholm Syndrome from the victim's perspective - Taemin; however, Taemin is also the perpetrator (the criminal). Basically, as Taemin has stated, he's trying to break away from his old image/persona and create a new one - "Destroy me more" (and make me even better, as though refined by fire). Right now he's leashed by his old persona ("I'm on a leash called you" - meaning himself) The process of changing your persona, the image that has been with you since the beginning, into a whole new identity is painful but necessary to achieve what he wants, which is to become an even better performer and artist. The statue with him in the sign of the cross is a symbol of resurrection/rebirth - the newly emerging Taemin. Taemin is a devout Catholic, so his MVs often have a lot of meaningful religious imagery and metaphors. Taemin said the beginning scene, when he is down in the dark with the lava floor represents the deepest depths of his present persona. The lighter scene (in the white room w/the speakers) is the mid-progression of his rebirth. Act II of this album will be that resurrection/rebirth. I believe this MV/song is linked to "Famous", also on Act I. The short explanation being "....being "Famous" may be "fabulous" but it's "dangerous" and creates a lot of drama, and Taemin wants "no drama". The requirements of fame (perfection always; flawless in appearance; always on top) are expensive (in personal terms) and can create an over-inflated Ego.

The idea of seeing the progress of his new persona/resurrection in Act 2 is so exciting I can’t wait for the symbolic meanings and the song itself! Again, the lyrics have dual meanings. If you look below the surface, the entire MV basically recounts the story of Genesis 3 and includes a brief warning and snippet of the salvation message. Lyrically, it's brilliant. If you react to it, I'll give you the breakdown.

There was a verse that says: “I’ve been collared by you It hurts so much that I can’t breathe, But I’m in ecstasy” It’s said that the lyrics were made based on STOCKHOLM SYNDROME. It’s where fear starts to make you feel positive emotions for a person keeping you in an extreme situation. This particularly happened in a bank robbery that occured in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973 where four employees were held hostage by robbers in a standoff with the police. Attachment formed between hostages and robbers. Hostages refused to testify against robbers and EVEN PROTECTED THEM. Swedish criminologist and psychiatrist Nils Bejerot named it STOCKHOLM SYNDROME. “I know well that it’s bad for me, that gaze and those movements Though I try to escape you Like I’m brainwashed, I nod along” THE LYRICS FIT THE CONCEPT SO WELL! Now, you can see there were 2 main characters in the MV portrayed by Taemin himself. The first one is the criminal who was chained by the police force. Second, the flower-like, innocent Taemin who has a scar on his nose which is the victim. Another one, right before the chorus comes out, there was a phrase “Ruin me more” which is in Korean, the pronunciation can be also meant for “Run Away”. It’s like “Try running away if you think you can”. When Taemin was recording the song, they agreed it would be better if it sounded ambiguous, so the phrase was INTENTIONAL. That’s how they recorded it. The lyricist of “Criminal” said on an interview with MOMOE that in the process of fixing up the lyrics, Taemin led the opinion to make it a little more conceptual. So they narrowed down the theme to Stockholm Syndrome. If you listen to the bridge of the song, you can hear pieces of news reports in Korean and English. When they created the guide music, you could hear that part only faintly. Taemin requested that he wanted lines to make it sound like a movie so the team wrote out all those lines and worked on it like a script of a film. If we go back to the pre-chorus of the second verse: “My heart torn open with scars is already filled with your fingerprints Then again, my hand holding onto yours that stabbed me isn’t clean either” For that part, if the lyrics before were more like being dragged along even as you say no, from the pre-chorus of the second verse, it was more like becoming an accomplice in this criminal love. You perfectly assimilate into what’s going on. So, in a way, it’s both a confession of love and a confession of a crime. Plus, in the choreography, Taemin suggested that his hands should be tied up to convey the story more to the audiences. I MEAN, THE TALENT THIS MAN HAS.
