@tonygrinney71152 жыл бұрын
It's a great episode. I love how they develop the characters of each of the priests and that they are all one dimensional. This priest is satirising those people who criticise the workmenship of others for example buidlers, plumbers, electricians, etc. "Which cowboys did the electrics on your house?" or "Who did your last plumbing job?" (as they tut and shake their head) of course what is missed out because his priest is the punchline "Well the whole lot will have to come down" or "It won't be cheap", so I think that was the purpose of that priest's character.

I keep meaning to ask you Taffe, have you ever seen the gentle Irish BBC drama Ballykissangel? In it you'll see the priest who is moving out of Assumpta's bar while she tells Ted that he's the best priest on the whole country, and he tells her obliquely that they will be together as he's leaving the priesthood. The other priest is almost ignored as Ted and Assumpta are so engrossed in each other, and then Dougal wakes Ted from his sweet dream, with Ted only dreaming about being chased by giant peanuts when he dozes back off. The bar seemed to be in most episodes of Ballykissangel (say Bally kiss angel), as did Assumpta, so maybe you could have a look at an episode. It was a nice, gentle, relaxed drama, very enjoyable. I've thought some more and think 'The Man Who Blew Away' could be a good one to watch. It's probably not right up the top of my favourite episodes, but it's a great introduction from the peak years of the show. I''m Catholic and love Father Ted. When they (the writers) poke fun or satirize the church it comes from a good place. There is not the hater mentality that you see so often on mainstream TV about religion. Another set of writers who "get it" when it comes to religion is South Park. The seem to know that the haters who criticize religion are more hypocritical and worse than those they are criticizing. Every part of society has bad apples but to endlessly drone on about it and use it as a club is disingenuous.

This one I've been looking forward to. Mrs. Doyle has her time in the spotlight! The singer is a thinly veiled parody of Sinead O'Connor, back when, in the 90s, she was constantly at war with the Irish Church and its godawful treatment of women. Bit topical right now after recent revelations. I also recommend everyone checks out when she did Celebrity Who Wants to be a Millionaire with Daniel O'Donnell. God, that was funny. This one is best remembered because of the Lovely Girls, mercilessly mocking the Irish pageants like the Rose of Tralee and the Mary from Dungloe, letting the girls have the chance to shine for the night, let their hair down, and party like it's 1959... Every year, the Rose gets annoyed at the memes, and insists it's NOT like that at all, this is serious dammit! A couple of years ago they even quoted the line from the movie Miss Congeniality - "It's not a beauty pageant, it's a scholarship program!" Well, yeah, there's a little more to it. They have male chaperones, who have their own award for the best one, and they have to show off a talent, and a few years ago they finally allowed single mothers in. And of course, they all want World Peace. 😏 No, not like this episode, or that movie, at all. Nope. Fun fact for Brits: Sports Presenter Gabby Logan took part in the real thing in 1991.

A few things to explain on this one. So the annoying guy is an exaggerated version of the kind of people who always know someone who can get you a deal on something, they will ask how much you got yours for and then complain about the quality saying they could have gotten a much better one for you. Maybe just an Irish thing? Also "Cowboys Ted!" is very much still quoted today around Ireland, usually if something is crap quality or breaks easily :D The singer is based on Sinead O'Conner who burned a picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live back in the early 90s obviously causing uproar. She was actually a legend though, one of the first and loudest to speak up about a lot of heavy topics, she was immensely talented but it unfortunately stunted her career. And the lovely girls comp is based on the Rose of Tralee contest which I've never actually watched so can't really say how bad it must have been to warrant that parody haha
