Catch and Cook Skate - How to fillet and prep a skate for the dinner table. This is an episode covering both fresh and satlwater. First Graeme films Tommo, the skipper of the Watchet charter boat "Lorna Doone" as he shows how to prepare a Skate for cooking. Graeme then takes it back to the Totally Awesome kitchen for the cookup. Next he takes you into the Tackle Shack where he runs through his best waders tips, including an exclusive peak at his best ever Barbel fishing session a few weeks ago....including hookups to camera..all filmed entirely on his own. Then..well..we don't know what to say, as he goes into overdrive and does a modelling session of the waders and accessories! Should hopefully have you spilling your tea with laughter...

What a lot of information packed into less than thirty minutes. First of all we have the polite Tommo showing us how to prepare a skate, then Graeme shows us a simple method of cooking it. Following this the hints/tips on purchasing waders, followed by the demonstration that puts Graeme in touch with barbel. Lastly the Graeme Pullen fashion show (sense of humour still in tact and demonstrating football skills that would get him a contract with Chelsea! Amazing video thanks for posting.

Hello TA Fishing, I was just wondering on some advice when freshwater fishing. So I have recently started going but all I seem to be able to catch is roach, I can see some beautiful carp but I feel like I’m fishing too close to reach them. I have a match rod currently only but you seem to have no issues getting carp on yours. Could you please give me advice on how to set my rig up to target those carp please. Also when using dog biscuits how are you able to put them on your hook as mine are either too hard or too soft. Thank you for you time 👍🏻😁
@chrisbath3961
@chrisbath3961 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not TA but with the biscuits, the easiest option is the plastic/ rubber ones either hooked or hair rigged... If you'd prefer genuine ones you can cut a shallow groove in them straight from the bag with a small hacksaw blade and superglue to the hook shank... If you'd actually like to hook them the best way I found to get them to a decent consistency was in a good sized sealable freezer bag with a small amount (50ml) I guess, of almost boiling water, give them a good shake and leave overnight👍
@mitchel3757
@mitchel3757 3 жыл бұрын
Chris Bath awesome I’ll definitely give that a go then mate. What size hook would you recommend when float fishing for carp? And how would you set your rig up? I use a 15g carp controller float but I also have other wagglers. I just can’t seem to get bites, I fished for 7 hours and didn’t even get a nibble. Maybe I’m fishing too high?
@chrisbath3961
@chrisbath3961 3 жыл бұрын
@@mitchel3757 if your float fishing I'd give the 'lift method' a try👍 there's quite a few vids on it! Hook wise perhaps an 8 unless your using big baits mate, if your struggling to get them feeding you can't beat trout pellets as feed if there's a lot of carp about👍

Graeme I was told by a bunch of fisherman on a boat once that the skate needs to sit in water for 24 hours to let the urine etc and Internals drain out. Is this true or can you catch and cook pretty immediately? Not sure tbh as a new sea angler. Thanks.

Sadly common skate is now critically endangered according the IUCN. They used to be common, now only prolific in Scotland and Ireland. All due to overfishing as they are a long lived slow reproducing species. I don’t think there is anything wrong with eating anything, but rays are not suitable for taking in large numbers.
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know of anyone who has ever eaten a Common Skate ,I certainly release all mine..Common Skate run to over 200lbs ,while the Thornback Skate makes double figures on average...You might be getting mixed up between the two species.

TA Fishing thanks for the answer, I didn’t mix the two species. Commercial Fishing used to target common skate and they are in fact still a very high prized table fish in expensive restaurants. Incredible as it sounds. Again I am not judging anyone for eating rays, but as all of our rays are basically gone in the Netherlands due to overfishing, I just hope you are taking care of this fantastic resource. As for wading, how else will you catch steelheads and salmon? You do miss out on so much. Harera

Paul Wright No it's not the same. Taking the fins off sharks and chucking the remaining mostly edible parts back is disgraceful. In this case he's harvesting all the edible parts (except the cheeks) and chucking the inedible parts back. The yield of meat to waste is not bad on a thornback, certainly better than say a monkfish.
