Introduction 1. HISTORICAL RELEVANCE OF THE SURAH 4:35 1.1 Period of revelation: When? -Est. 6th year of prophethood (mid-prophethood of Mecca) 1.2 Relationship with preceding Surah (Maryam) in subject matter and period of revelation (which was during the time of first migration or immediately after) -It teaches that it was a very difficult time for Prophet and believers 1.3 Situation at the time: - Dawah had gone public -The opposition (Quraish) resorted to prosecuting and terrorising the believers (which led to the migration) -The no. of muslims were steadily growing (there was unity but from the few dozen muslims (24 muslims at the most) at the time half of them left/migrated) - Prophet's incessant dawah (and praying for success without hardly any rest, preaching from morning and praying all night with a short nap in the day?) ○Shortly after revelation of TaHa- Umar r.a. embraced Islam (powerful, inspiring story to be covered later). The ayats of this surah changed his mind. 2. The order/sequence of Surah TaHa in Quran @13:48 When the ayat is revealed---> position in the surah is also revealed (Differences in opinion of scholars that Ayats are organised by Allah but not the Surats. Personal opinion of the Sheikh is that it is a divine order) Order: Surah Maryam > TaHa > Anbiyat At the end of Surah Maryam: "we have facilitated Quran on your tongue (why?) To congratulate the God-conscious and to warn the extremely stubborn" [The ayat explains the function/role/purpose of quran] Beginning of Taha: "we did not send quran to cause you distress" [The ayat explains how you can use the Quran: quran is meant to make our lives better and easier.] Thus the transition between the Surats. There are many other links: Ayat 93, Maryam "there is not but whosoever in the heavens and the earth come to Allah as slaves willingly" Taha, 6 "to him alone (exclusively) belongs all that in the heavens and earth and between them. Taha, 98 (last ayat) "and how many have we destroyed before them? Do you sense (feel/hear) anything from them)" [a challenge] Taha, 78 "Pharoah and his army followed them and were completely drowned" 3. Objective of the Surah @22:16 Central thesis/topic: ISLAM IS A BLESSING AND NOT A CURSE How is it emphasised: A. Story of Musa AS: The prophethood of Musa and his inner actions and dealings with Pharoah (opposition) and the guidance and blessing in it. Believers (Banu Israel)'s suffering and oppression, sacrifices which led to mercy from Allah. Attribute of Allah ArRahman is repeated frequently in Surah TaHa (and in Maryam) Prophet explained to us Allah's love is like a mother's love. Rahman is the abundantly merciful/ extremely benevelont. Thus the frequent repetition of arRahman shows that Islam is a blessing. CONCEPT OF GUIDANCE AND MISGUIDANCE A. Magicians of Pharoah: their conversion, willingness to die for Islam and the outcome of the sacrifice B. Adam+Hawwa and Iblis: Human v Jinn Outcome and the choices made Unfortunate people are those who put themselves in bad positions. Allah explains how people get there. The importance of patience prayer and remembrance of Allah in pursuit of truth. The difficulties along the way are not to be misinterpreted as misfortunes (but temporary tests of endurance). C. PLEASURE OF ALLAH AND HOW TO ATTAIN THEM D. ALLAH ADDRESSES/SPEAKS TO PROPHET DIRECTLY (To be explained further in verse 2) Allah speaks to disbelievers/opposition/enemies in third person to show his displeasure and show conviction to prophet that He is on his side. Thus all this emphasises that Islam is a blessing. 4. THE STORY OF MUSA AS @31:41 -This is a prominent feature of Surah TaHa (why and the Relevance to Ummah of prophet Muhammad s.a.w. to be explained in Taha, verse 9: wisdom/benefit of the story) 5. Name of surah TaHa, why? @32:34 -some surahs have multiple names -TaHa also referred to as Surah Kaleem (because Musa a.s. is titled as Kalimallah) 6. Virtues of Surah TaHa @33:56 SPECIFIC VIRTUE The attachment of specific virtues to Surats: Historical phenomena- There was a sect (in history) called Karamiah whose intentions were misguided at the time people grew distant from quran. They made up virtues of quran to interest people. Therefore different narrations were falsely attributed to the companion of prophet s.a.w. Ibn Abbas (whom people greatly respect as the prophet (?) ....) Therefore some popular narrations/virtues are not authentic. This is because people expect special virtues to read a specific Surah. -Authentic narration 1: "Prophet said in regards to surah 17 to 21: they are from the Itaq (adiq- something that frees/releases from trials and tribulations/ disbelief and calamities/ something that reaches the culmination or completion of faith" and "thalaqi- old, inherited wealth/money" as a metaphor that this is not just any treasure but old resource/money- revealed in the early days of Mecca (what got them through te early, tough times)) Authentic Narration 2: Abu Umama "The greatest name of Allah is mentioned in 3 Surats of Quran i.e. baqarah, alimran, taha. What is this great name? Some say AlHay al Qayyoom or ARRAHMAN or Combined pronouns (such as innani anallah- greatest way to refer to Allah) Popular but weak narration: Abu Hurairah "Allah recited Taha and Yasin before creation... (?) Angels congratulated tongues that would recite it... (?) (Weak/ might be fabricated better not focus on it) 7. Portions/Format of the Surah @46:00 3 portions: A. Ayat 1 to 8 Obj: To console the prophet B. Ayat 9 to 98 Obj: Story of Musa with a variety of topics (receiving revelations, Medyan, sent to Pharoah, miracles granted, magicians, retreat, etc...) C. Ayat 99 to 135 (the end) Obj: Hereafter, Zikr, Prayer: consoling the prophet and believers Therefore mercy and benevolence of Allah.

What’s absolutely remarkable is that the verses the people of yesterday may have looked at and not understood completely - the chances are today they are completely understood without a second glance. It truly was a test for the scholars to allow their faith to kick in at the points where they came across verses they weren’t sure a hundred percent about the meaning. And nothing in the Quran is therein it for no good reason. If every single letter you get reward for reciting it, then every single letter was divinely placed there for our understanding whether the meaning of it is understood by us completely yet or not

I gained useful knowledge related to the surah but I have to admit that it would have been better to read a concise intro and tafsir than to listen through this long, repetitive explanation. (As this is a lecture, he actually proceeded quite well, engaging the listeners and I am thankful to have come across this since it sparked my interest to read more about the Surah)

Jazakallah hayr for this but I feel the introduction is little too long, the sheikh seems to be talking too much instead of delving into the thafseer of the verses themselves and explaining. However appreciate all the hard work you have put into this. May Allah accept this from you and give us ilm from this Aameen

Salaam. Part of a tafseer is understanding the circumstances and back story. Of course there is an indepth analysis of the words but language is meaningful in context. May Allah swt reward your effort for listening to this video and learning from it.

TAFSIR Ayat 1: @50:45 Summary: meaning unknown ... ... ... - 2 letters (thaa and haa) - 28 places like this in Quran (Al Huroof.. ?) Joined letters separated from each other are to be read separately. - what does it mean? The obscure interpretation : Ibn Abbas- this is referred to as Plant your feet (stomp), O' man; To stand firm (as Prophet was suffering at the time (?) TaHa is also said to be name of Prophet but this is not authentic: as they believed taha=ya habibi ○○○The meaning is unknown. But everything in the Quran have meaning even though we do not understand it. It reminds us that there are things we wouldn't know. This could be a test for the Alim. (The test of the Zalim is to learn.) For instance, Imam Malik did not know the majority of the questions that were asked to him. Approach quran with an attitude of "I dont know", that you are here to learn leaving aside assumptions, to benefit from quran. Another benefit is that it captures the attention of the listener and the reader. And then mentions the quran after the letters. Remember the hadith of Prophet: for every letter there are 10 rewards. A.L.M is not one letter but 3. We learned 2 here :)
