When I was a teen I worked at a local Sherwin Williams on Long Beach Blvd in Long Beach Ca in the mid 80s. The franchise owner would be so angry when taggers stole the spray paint etc. He caught quite a few and had them prosecuted etc. One day we cam in, our whole wall in the parking lot was tagged with a mural of the owner, in his shop apron, running after people stealing spray paint. It was amazing... It was up one day... I wished I had a Polaroid or a camera before he painted it over...

For me I personally graffiti for the rush, for the fact I can be driving and see my name somewhere, the thought of people looking at my art and wondering who did it and how it got there gets me excited
@dimitriisov1262
@dimitriisov1262 2 жыл бұрын
No one wonders who did it, most people just get annoyed that someone felt they had to (in their view) destroy a communal good. If everyone made graffiti style murals or things that have a greater chance of being perceived as subjectively beautiful by the observer, less people would be saddened by it. But the use of graffiti for hate crimes, narcissism, and counter culture makes it so that most people see it as property destruction and a sign of crime. Also according to the broken window theory it actually may increase crime rates. You have to realize that architecture is art too, (maybe not mass produced things like signs and predesigned buildings) and damaging someone else's art with your own art is one of the most unartful things a person could ever do, the opposite of free expression. In an ideal world there would be a place where it was ok to graffiti and wasn't hurting anyone's business, but for some people regulation would defeat the purpose and it would no longer be art.

@@dimitriisov1262 if you write on a wall it's not "destruction" it's just altering the appearance of the surface. Imo i love tags and throwies, it's something to look at instead of a blank surface and i enjoy trying to figure out what things say. Y'all never complain about huge billboards and commercials plastered on bus stops, walls etc. But hate on ordinary people who tag their names on the same things, it's something that's deeply engrained on us, cavemen used to do it, Egyptians used to do it, typography is amazing if you learn about it. That being said there are unwritten rules in graffiti and i don't agree with writing on private property, religious buildings, traffic signs or cars.

1) Its a ****ing videogame, not real life. People don't commit hundreds of random public massacres like in Grand Theft Auto or curb stomp turtles like in Super Mario World in real life 2) Trane was trying to expose the murder of the previous mayor by the current mayor using his art. He wasn't just trying to make himself feel big. 3) The city of New Radius was a dictatorship. Not a corrupt democracy, an actual dictatorship that was a democracy in name only. It had rigged elections and paramilitary troops constantly out in the streets enforcing unjust laws. Trane was graffiting in order to protest the dictatorship. He had an actual legit reason to do graffiti

I love watching cities covered in tags, throwies and pieces, it's beautiful in its own way and just fits the urban environment, there's something very human about typography and it's fun to see different styles and names. It's the sort of thing where either people love it or they hate it. I never hear people complain about all the huge billboards and commercials on walls/busstops/busses and all the corporate logos with LEDs but as soon as ordinary people tag names on a wall they are demonized, it's absurd imo. I do however think that some writers today should stop painting on ordinary people's properties, and religious buildings it's a bad look. People in the comments, understand the difference between street art and graffiti, graffiti is vandalism but to some can also be considered art.

@@UTP_ENTthat last part was idiotic to say. A mural is both street art and obviously a mural as “street art” is a general vague term. Just like how a portrait is both a portrait and art. Saying a portrait isn’t art it’s a portrait is pretty much what you’re doing but with “murals” its not incorrect to call it either or, but it is incorrect to say it’s not one of either or cuz it’s both. A mural is street art as it’s a typa street art IE, art on the street.

People confuse Vandals/taggers and writers with Artist who do graffiti. In its core roots graffiti originated from Vandalism going out writing, tagging throwing up their names trying to find the heaven spot where ones name would stay for years.

@@Stoney-Jacksman The advertisers got the permission of the city and/or the people who own the building. Also the advertisers are literally paying people monthly to put up and keep the ads up there. Also if the advertisers stop paying and/or if people demand the ads get taken down, the advertisers can just turn off the tv screen or take down the poster. It takes between hundreds to thousands of dollars to remove a graffit tag or bomb If the graffiti artists just got the permission of the building's owner(s) or just put up posters instead, this wouldn't be an issue

I guess I don't share the same enthusiasm for this as some. While living in Portland I've seen many murals go up on building walls. Great artist will spend days creating beautiful pieces that add color to the otherwise gray backdrop and bland cityscape. I can't understand why we should be rewarding taggers that come along and can deface these works of art in a matter of seconds with an ugly self absorbed unimaginative crappy tag. I've always respected well executed colorful graffiti art that goes up in random empty places...just tagging over murals is not only ugly, it's disrespectful to that act of creativity. These people aren't artists, they're assholes. How is this cool?

As a Mexican-American growing up in Texas, on the south side of town we had murals everywhere. Primarily of community leaders and civil rights activist like MLK and Cesar Chavez. Sure there was gang graffiti and stuff, but the taggers had enough *RESPECT* for other people's art and history to leave the shit alone. Something these punks are sorely lacking...

there is a difference between graffiti and gang writing, graffiti is all about getting your name up, no matter how you do it, rooftops, murals, etc. gang writing is about letting other gangs know your territory. these " graffiti writers " in Texas don't put their name up enough, they just suck.

Graffiti, unlike street art and murals, has a rich, rich, deep culture, tradition and history since the 1960s in NYC. Bushwick collective/street art is more or less something new that came with the mass influx of out of towners gentrifying brooklyn over the past 14 years. Bushwick used to be a mecca for bombing. Nearly every child growing up in nyc tagged their name up in some way at some point, its so deeply rooted in the culture. People really have some audacity to speak against bombers going over legal murals in a neighborhood that for DECADES was a place harboring some of the worlds illest writers. Its the equivelant to a mom and pop fish fry spot getting driven out of town and all of a sudden the new white kids open up a coffee shop where you can't find a drink for under 3 dollars. Then slowly, the neighborhood changes and no longer caters to the common people, but rather the new kids who are too awkward to mwet their neighbors who lived there for years, and call the cops on the locals for bbq fumes coming thru their windows or kids tagging or people bumping M.O.P too loud. Its downright disrespectful. Bombing belongs because they take the effort to risk their freedom to put up their names. Muralists cant keep up with the sport, the competition, so they deserve to be driven out.

!? graf is subjective and isn’t for the general public to enjoy unless they happen to have a basic understanding of how letters work and how they can be manipulated/tweaked. People aren’t doing graffiti because they want to follow the rules. it gives you a rush. you can literally take whatever you want out of writing, it’s completely subjective and if you’ve ever felt isolated/otherized it gives you a sense of community/camaraderie that is hard to find (especially for folks on the margins who are directly affected by the gentrification all these ugly-ass murals promote). you’re telling me you’d rather look an ad for a company owned by Jeff Bezos than a dope fill-in? different strokes for different folks, I guess. I dunno what “hardball questions” they could have possibly asked without sounding like complete asshats. graf is for the kids and the cutties and isn’t for brain-dead cnn-watching ass yuppies with black/white mentalities on everything (like you). rest my case

@@flatcircleone I said NOTHING about how I liked or disliked graffiti as a whole, merely that I disliked how the reporters hadn't seemed to actually have asked the sujects any actual questions and/or just tossed them softball questions to the extent that it came across as just recording the taggers opinions about themselves. I'm going to respond to every single sentence you wrote, not to antagonise you but because what you wrote could be the artistic, moral, ethical and legal bedrock foundations for the Leaning Tower of Pissa "Dude shut up" Not a real argument. This will not win you any points in debate class at high school, college or university, ever. "Graf is subjective and isn't for the general public to enjoy" Then don't put it on a public building thats currently occupied and/or beinf rented out! Put it on an abandoned building and/or part of a public structure like a bridge and/or a subway tunnel, not a public building where the graffiti could destroy the image of the building that the people renting or leasing have worked so hard to build. If you just do that then your graffiti will be publically tolerated, enjoyed and even respected. Its not the same story if its a currently occupied/owned building. Say for example that someone's made a restaurant that's supposed to envoke a classic boxcar diner, or an apartment building was built as a classic modernist structure. A tag on the front of the building ruins the image they worked so hard to build! (Notice that I said nothing about tags in the alleyway of the building and/or artistic murals or pieces.) "unless they happen to have a basic understanding of how letters work..." Say I enjoy all forms of dancing. Even though I appreciate all forms of dancing, I wouldn't want a dancer dancing in front of my building 24/7 without them even asking me and/or any of the other people in my building how we feel about them dancing there and/or if we wanted them dancing there at all. "People aren't doing graffiti because they want to follow the rules" That's fairly obvious to the vast majority of humanity. "It gives you a rush" Crack cocaine, methamphetamines and amphetamines also gives people a rush. "You can literally take whatever you want out of writing, its completely subjective" EVERYTHING is subjective. Go to TV Tropes page about "Death of the author". "and if you've ever felt isolated/otherised it gives you a sense of community/camaraderie that is hard to find" Isn't the whole point of graffiti that you're competing against other people in the "community"? That being said, why do you feel you have to "permanently" "mark" a building instead of putting a poster or wheat post up there? "(especially for folks on the margins that are directly affected by the gentrification all these ugly ass murals promote)" Why do you believe that these murals promote gentrification? In the Metro Vancouver region of British Columbia Canda, it tends to be the worn down buildings (like the public housing buildings and the community centres) that get murals painted onto them. "you're telling me you'd rather look an ad for a company owned by Jeff Bezos than a dope fill in?" Thats a textbook example of a false equivalency. We weren't talking about billboards to begin with, we were talking about store fronts and the entrances to apartment and condo buildings. Personally I wouldn't care much if you defaced an Amazon bill board ad. Someone's personal owned or rented property is a different story. "I dunno what 'hardball questions' they could've asked without looking like complete jackasses" Just basic ****ing ****. Like 'what motivates you to do this?' and 'do you have anything you hope to accomplish by doing this?' and 'do you think you have any 'rights' to the city, given that you are all transplants from New Orleans that only moved here like 5 years ago at most?' "graf is for the kids and the cutties and isn't for brain-dead cnn watching ass yuppies with black/white mentalities on everything (like you). rest my case" You're coming off as a dumb entitled hipster mofo, you know that right? If you're creating graffiti just to get laid, you lose ANY moral and/or ethical graffiti you might've otherwise had. My parents only got pensions by working 15 years each at soul crushinf government jobs. My biggest issue is that I would probably be defined as a bleeding heart liberal who is so constantly wonder about where I'm in the right or wrong about any given issue that in the future I might possibly develop ulcers stressing about it. I read any obective sounding online newspaper article I can, buddy! You can take your simplistic moralistic judgments about me and shove them into the toilet, you judgmental jackass!

I started writing in 07 as a young dumbass. Went to jail for the first time the very next year like a dumbass. When I joined my very first crew that wasn't full of a bunch of toys I was banned from going on runs like these guys with their preschool-shit-fills looking throwies. The only reason I got in was because I'm family from the neighborhood and I did have to put in some work on a bunch of heaven spots, freiters, ect. to do so but the OG told me to work on my craft *as we do not just shit on peoples walls* . So I did. I studied all the elements of hiphop. I chilled at the art shop. I painted a bunch of mural spots. I had a legal wall at my house where (still feel lucky) a bunch of OGs would come roll a few up and paint for hours, just teaching me the history, the love, technique and how to find your own distinct handstyle. It wasn't even until but a few years ago that I reached a level of confidence where I'm like 'yeah I definitely ain't shitting on walls anymore' but I'm oldernow and my leader/childhood best friend was murdered last year :/ Graffiti is so near and dear to my heart but I'm just trying to figure out the correct way to keep it alive..maybe start a youtube channel or something. All I know is *these clowns love to paint but that's all. They are a bunch of vagrants who've got some practicing to do, as far as I can see for now* yeah you can get up. Big deal, you angered a bunch of locals. Get a job andcome back when you can impress me Bunch of *toys*
