The 1981 NFL season was the start of the decline of the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1980s. The roster that GM Jim Murray and head coach Dick Vermeil helped build began to show their age especially after LB Bill Bergey retired after the 1980 season, DE Claude Humphrey followed after the 1981 season and LB John Bunting after the 1982 season.

The lower draft position as the team got better didn't help, but as the team aged they also drafted pretty poorly from 1980-1985; on average, they got one legit starter out of each draft, where you really need to get at least 2-3 to even tread water. Whatever else Buddy was, there's little question he drafted/evaluated a lot better than the previous regime did. www.drafthistory.com/teams/eagles.html

I'm convinced the '81 Eagles were a better team than the '81 Giants. Yet when they played the Giants in the playoffs, Eagle kick/punt returner, Wally Henry, fumbled the ball, not once, but twice -- the second being recovered for a touchdown. That's what made the difference in the game. Had the Eagles not choked against the Giants, they would have played the 49ers the following week. That would have been a very interesting match-up.
@TomG15555 жыл бұрын
Over their last 5 games of that season, the Eagles were 1-4 while the Giants were 4-1, and the Giants had beaten the Eagles in their last head-to-head matchup. Overall the Eagles may have been better, but for that game it was a hot team going up against a struggling team, and that's how it played out.

Those were great uniforms the Eagles had from 1974-1984. That defense was as tough as the Steelers, and running outside on them was mainly futile.

Eagles had better point differential than any other NFL team in 81...including 49ers...2 losses came from missed/botched field goals at the end of 2 games... Winning those 2 games would have made them the second seed instead of the cowboys...I have no doubt eagles would have crushed buccaneers in divisional... Conference championship vs 49ers would have been a terrific game I have no doubt

What happened to the Eagles after Superbowl XV?
@TomG15554 жыл бұрын
Short answer: they got old. If you look at the '83 roster, there's a lot of the same starters as in '80, except they'd all gotten older and not as good anymore. The '80, '81 and '82 drafts were pretty much wastelands, even with drafting Roynell Young in '80 and Mike Quick in '82. So, the decline was pretty much inevitable, regardless of whether Vermeil burned out or not.
@DNSKansas3 жыл бұрын
Bill Bergey retired after Super Bowl XV. and Claude Humphrey after '81. That was that for the defense. In 1983 came one of the worst first round draft picks ever, Michael Haddix. Could have had Kelly or Marino to take over from Jaworski. Or Darrell Green. Or Bruce Matthews.
@whataboutrob4423 жыл бұрын
@@TomG1555 So he wasn't smart enough to draft for the future? Either that or he was "George Allen-ing' the young players. Something doesn't seem right since we know Dick returned and got his ring. Maybe he knew that he would get it if he got that "Air Coryell" offense. Makes ya think...
@whataboutrob4423 жыл бұрын

@@whataboutrob442 Playoff success = poorer draft position, was part of it. Also, the guys who should have been in their prime in '81-'84 would have come from the late '70s drafts, and for a lot of those, there were very few high draft picks b/c a lot of them had been traded away for guys like Bergey, Gabriel, etc. during the McCormick years. Of the high picks in the early '80s, there were a few good ones (Quick, R. Young, Hopkins) but more bad (L. Mitchell, Haddix, L. Sampleton, D. Miraldi, etc.), which didn't help things either. Vermeil did a great job with what he had, considering he inherited a bad team that was draft pick poor and built them into a Super Bowl team. Eventually the toll for all that damage in the draft would come due, and that fell mostly on Marion Campbell to sort out.
