Thank you. We often hear people use the word Fajing and Kong Jing interchangeably. This can be confusing. Literally "fajing" in this context means "emitting power", while "Kong Jing" is "Empy power". They are sometimes translated as "Explosive Force" and "Empty Force". I imagine Obi-wan Kenobi saying, "Don't use force, Luke. Use the Force, Luke."

Thanks for this... you’ve commented elsewhere that really good Tai Chi looks fake, because it is different from our everyday experience of how two people interact. And as a viewer, it’s easier to understand and appreciate good use of leverage, angles, timing etc, than to determine whether a strange-looking effect is great Tai Chi, bad acting or a student pleasing their teacher. And if one of the descriptions of good Tai Chi is “finding the part of your opponent that wants to lose, and helping him do that”, then the hypnosis model, that you manage to synch with the opponent’s subconscious energy and control it, is close to getting the student to please the teacher. There is a whole theory of hypnosis that considers it to be a social phenomenon, based on the subject’s wish to please the hypnotist. But I think the key to the usefulness of such demo-videos - other than as advertising for the master who produces them - is whether or not their is a benefit to the student: to the viewer-as-student (rather than as judge of whether or not the video is fake), and to the opponent-as-student (rather than as mere dummy to be thrown around the dojo). When I watch a video that gives me the impression that I understand something better than I did before, and if that understanding seems to be in line with Tai Chi Classics and other examples of good teaching, then I’m inclined to judge that video “useful”. And having experienced the “magic’ of Tai Chi for myself, I know that mix of bewilderment and laughter that the student-as-opponent experiences at the hands of a genuine expert. What I like about many of your demo/talk/lesson videos, is that you give the student-as-partner the experience of succeeding, as well as the experience of being defeated. I think this is the key to good Non-video, real-life hands-on) teaching, to sense the flickering of ability in a student, and to allow them to experience success, so that this flickering can be made stronger, more dependable, accessible when required. And so I like your point about good teachers training their students to be sensitive and succeed, whereas bad teachers train them to fail. And I think a good demo-video should similarly train viewers to learn. Because the comment-storm of “this is is great/this won’t work on the street” is very boring, and no-one learns anything from it... But just as it’s difficult for citizens to sift accurate reporting from fake news, so it’s not easy for a dedicated student of Tai Chi to know which exciting video to trust. My suggestion is perhaps biblical “you shall know them by their fruits” - look at what the student can learn, not only at what the master is trying to show....

This is why I enjoy your videos and keep coming back. Sincere, grounded, and open-minded. A pretty rare combination. My current teacher explained it much as you have. A useful occasional training exercise, not directly applicable to combat. He suggested I think of it as both the teacher and student "tuning in" to each other over time. Personally, first I felt nothing, then a light sensation of warmth, and now a sense of impingement.

Very good and honest explanation! I would add though that there are people who can in fact use empty force effectively in actual situations to hit or knock down an opponent. It is not very common because of the amount of training that is involved however. Most people only practice zhan zhuang (at a more advanced level) between 30 minutes to 2 hours per session. This is good and at the 2 hour stage very good, but it does not compare to people like Yu Pengzi who stood 6-8 hours every evening instead of sleeping. He was able to hit or move people at will and even shake trees. But I agree for the average person they will not have that kind of result at will. As far as I can tell all systems of actual kong Jing have their roots with Yu Pengzi and he is known to be the creator of such practice.

Yes, it is. Actually "ki" (jap. 気 or 氣) *is* "qi" or "chi" (chin. 氣 - same character!). The meaning of "aiki" (jap.合気) ranges from "focussing/concentrating energy/force/spirit/intention" over "uniting/combining energies/forces" to "proper energy/force/spirit/intention" - depending on the context - in Aikido it concentrates mostly on the internal aspect of feeling "energies" and learning how to deal with them - similar to how taiji does it, too, though it *is* different in many aspects!

Well said. The problem, as I see it is that there is no consistent definition of qi. It changes to suit the context within which it is applied. Monotheist: "Do you believe in God?" Scientist: "I suppose that depends on the definition of God. What do think God is like? Monotheist: "Well, first of all, She is black."

This fah/kong jing etc. is definitely something that needs to be felt to be believed imo. I myself was skeptical of IMA's until I took up Tao breathing practices for health which overtime allowed me to sense intentional movement as opposed to exertion. Sending people flying with this internal force is one thing but this force is fast (or can be with practice) and the force is concentrated and penetrates deep as opposed to blunt external force which is spread out and less penetrating.

His videos demonstrate great biomechanics. It is quite unrelated to kong jing. His fajing (emitting power) is not the empty force of which I speak in this video. It is a clearly understood physical power that can be done by anyone with correct practice. It is about a different way of transferring momentum without increasing the kinetic energy of the extremities.

Thanks so much! :o) If I may ask, I have been exploring different methods of "jin", and their usefulness within a clinical setting (acupuncture, bodywork, etc.) It seems that Kong Jin wouldn't be much use. I'm trying to track those down. Any help? I've studied basic "qi emission", but am wondering if there is more out there...

I'm not a fan of kong jin demos & will not defend them. I agree with your assessment of "most students." But the practice, when performed properly, can have benefit to the student. As for the noises, some people make loud noises when they sneeze while others don't. This does not make the sneeze any less sincere. Some may claim the noise is not a necessary part of the sneeze, while those with noisy sneezes will say that they cannot help it. Either way, it is nothing to sneeze at.

I have Paul Dong's books. I learned a lot from them. There's one video on KZbin on Paul Dong's affecting people with his qi (no touch), making them relax (inactive, no self control, who knows?). The title of the video is "Paul Dong" and it was from a TV channel from Hawaii. To me the gist of the video is that before doing anything to them, Paul Dong first checked people's energy (by sensing their hands) and he selected only the ones sensitive to his energy to go be in the demonstration.

Every example I have seen of such things has been a magician’s trick. No one has done it under controlled experimental conditions. If it is possible, none of the adepts seem interested in proving it. Also, so-called empty force only works on less than 10 percent of selected subjects. This is not a good success rate for a martial artist. However, it is still a phenomenon worth studying. But I suggest doing it to explore the experience, not to succumb to it.

Ian what do you know about different internal arts affects on your chi or specifically the ability to refine it? I've heard with taichi and particularly the yang style it gives you an abundance of chi that is inherently yin in nature whereas (for initially nourishing the body and getting you healthy) in preparation for a style like bagua that 'yangifies' the chi or refines it and changes the quality so you have a lot more internal power. @IanSinclairTaiChi Жыл бұрын
“Empty force” can be thought of as a fictitious force like centrifugal force, Coriolis force, and Euler force. It only appears in the relationships between different inertial reference frames. You can train the individual elements that make it possible, such as stillness, emptiness, egoless-ness, and all the bio mechanical principles involved. But it ultimately depends on the other person. It cannot be applied to inanimate objects, except in a magic show. Train first the mundane until it becomes subtle, then becomes profound. Eventually you might discover the mysterious. Do not seek the mysterious. Let it find you when it will not excite you beyond normal scientific curiosity.
@IanSinclairTaiChi12 жыл бұрын
It's the other way around. Everyone has qi. The experienced can tell the difference between a fake and a real attack because of the qi involved. A fake doesn't project qi. A real attack does. This is true of both the trained & the untrained fighter. If the student gets good at sensing qi, they will be able to respond intelligently to an attack. If the student cannot even sense the qi of a teacher who can project it clearly, then they will not be able to perceive any attack properly.

After 20 years of Tai Chi training, I've concluded that the best way to think of "chi" is as a visual concept, used to get the moves in sync with their martial applications. As an internal energy force field of sorts, it must stand up to empirical scientific evaluation before I have any reason to accept it as such. "The invisible, and the non-existent appear to be one in the same".

Then if the other person DOES do empty force like the masters, then they don't need to hit you. They just need to use empty force to control you even before you got to them. So no matter if your opponent knows it or not, you'll lose. So it's like a lose lose situation. So what's the point of doing empty force in the first place?

comment part 2 ...that the guy was a skeptic. I was wondering what could be the self defense value of something that work only on attackers who have faith in your powers. That is a very good point, and it is one of the problems with some teachers. They confuse the students about the nature of the exercise. It is the same with any martial arts exercise. If the teacher is not clear about the context of the drill, the student will be worse off than if they had never done any martial arts. Kong jin is the same. That is why many teachers stop doing it as a separate exercise and only do it when it is integrated with other self defence drills.

Electricity; which can either be Direct Current or Alternating Current. Typically the DC that flow's through the NS is Strong & the AC is Balanced, EF Kata is Kinesthetic Interoception intended for Sensitivity & Control. By Balancing the DC & Strengthening the AC; the NS's Magnetism Oscillate's ie. Force.

Thanks for the kind words. I can’t speak specifically about Mr Mizner, having never crossed paths with him. My experience with others of that lineage has shown that, while there is real skill involved, the demonstrations are misleading, and often detrimental. They depend on a minimum level of skill on the part of the teacher, but also a minimum level of conditioning of the students. Most people who train for an hour or two can be susceptible. The goal should be to have all your students be immune to the trick. I find that too many students of that lineage just get really good at being bounced around. There are many notable exceptions , of course. There is a reason why high-level teachers do not do these demonstrations and low-level teachers cannot do them. Middle level teachers do them, sometimes for teaching, sometimes for self promotion.

Fajin is Explosive force not "Empty force" per se. Even tho. Mr.IS states that fajin is the explosive force generated as a physical phenomena which is more explained by 'newtonian' mechanics", he perpetuates the ambiguity often seen in explanations. Kong Jin more usefully describes a force that does not appear to be transferred by "physical contact". It may be transmitted as fajin or another method of interrupting the other's intended action. I'd prefer an explanation from a Master.....

To sense the opponent's chi in order to counter them. But then that's kinda contradicting. First, you must have the same training in order to sense them. So in other words it's useless or ineffective to dodge others if they don't do empty force (which is the majority of people).

The practice of bagua and its ability to refine your chi in this way is attributed to the spiral like motions associated with it whereas the yang style is more circular. Chen style is said to be closest to bagua. Although if you practice yang style long enough your body becomes mible enough so you can express that original yin chi in a yang form, martially.So do different IM's refine the chi in different ways...so a yang guy cant get what a chen or bagua guy gets from their respective practice?

Thanks for your pragmatism, Ian. My feeling is if Chen Xiaowang, regarded as one of the top players in the world, for Taiji gongfu (effort over time) cannot do this then I doubt any other 'masters' can. And, if kong jing only works with students then what is the point if it won't work with the rest of the populace, namely attackers? I do know that Qi can be emitted outside the body to change cellular properties, like tumours, but cannot get people to bounce off walls like chimpanzees (against their will). Many like Peter Yeung (or Lama Dandrup Dorje whatever), George Dillman and Kiai Master Ryokerin have all been exposed as complete frauds, despite their protests and explanations. All just gives the martial arts a bad name. I think there is some collusion, co-operation, submission by the students. Maybe mind control (hypnosis?) or bullying by the teacher? Whatever, more important, above even skill, or genuinely amazing feats, is 'character'. This is even more rare and no-one today even seems to care about this!

In my humble opinion ' masters' claiming that they can direct ' empty force' make Tai Chi a laughing stock .It implies that the pinnacle of Tai Chi is magical ability. Its bad enough having so many Tai Chi teachers that lack any discernible martial martial ability without others claiming they can ' move' others around or deflect attacks by magic

1st, Ill say that most of this is simple Hypnosis. It works on 'followers'. In fact, the teachers encourage the following, thus further the response. Also the subconscious mind picks up on many things that consciously ur not aware. Hand movement, facial expression, eye rolling..etc. When ur exposed 2such a person for a while,ur sub.c. mind picks up on subtle details, & translates it to actions. U choose if u will follow his non vocal commands& to what degree.
@kungfusteve7312 жыл бұрын
So, the trick is conditioning &willingness. In combat, its true that theres some degree of use to pick up subtle clues. However, if u had never met the person b4, u have no base reference.Whereas if u play w. friend, u know his traits well. Also,being taught 2submit2 the sifu, creates a negative response. Same as training the wrong physical gesture would not be helpful. If u want expanded consciousness, Meditation is the key. Not this mess thats being pushed out.

So basically, "Empty Force" is _not_ a supernatural power, but a training method to teach sensitivity to an attacker's intent? _Except_ for the egocentric teachers which use "Empty Force" plus human suggestibility and desire for approval to bolster their own ego by appearing to have supernatural power, while teaching their students nothing but how to "sell" their master's movements? More or less?

Now, Im not saying there isnt unseen energies. Its very possible. But, no way would the universe allow control of another, via any such way. If such a thing were allowed, we would have a real mess, as people exercised destruction upon each other. The control, is u allowing yourself 2b controlled. Its u feeling what u believe,or had been told u should feel. Reality starts & end within ur own mind. So if u want2believe ur possessed, then that exactly what u will be (or have allowed to happen)
@kungfusteve7312 жыл бұрын
But I will say, that Meditation, is a real amazing thing. Real or not, the experiences can bring the power of the subconscious mind, closer to rein of control of the conscious mind. Its richly rewarding & the positive changes, r permanent, once attained.

There is no good reason to believe that 'empty force' is a real thing. I of course, do not believe it since no evidence has been provided to support the claim. However, I would argue that I can not only 'not believe it', I can also say with confidence that, 'this is highly unlikely' as well. I am still a beginner, but I DO train Internals. Chi is 'just a word that has been used to describe something'. But because of all the baggage with this word and all of its interpretations, people have gotten the wrong idea of "what is going on", and even "how to figure it out". Basically, 'Don't know the answer' AND 'asking the wrong questions'. Chi / Ki / and everything associated with this 'ability' is a PHYSICAL thing. Not, "some flowing 'energy' that can be simply 'willed' with the mind". Internal Training is process that builds a 'stronger' body, allowing one to do things that seem counterintuitive, IE -Chen XiaoWang barely moving an inch or two against that giant strong man attempting to move him- . An ability like that, while counterintuitive, still is reasonable. Empty Force is a whole different issue entirely. While I would say that Chi / Aiki / etc is a type of ability that allows the user to "seem 100 times stronger than they appear ( and many other things)", Empty Force implies that, "the user can 'literally send matter from themselves and TO a target". This actually just flies in the face of everything we know about the human body. While I admit that Aiki itself ( the definition and abilities that I propose ) also is counter intuitive, and "challenges" what we know about the human body, empty force FLIES IN THE FACE of what we know. This is a problem. ........................SENDING INVISIBLE MATTER TO A TARGET !!!! : /

Two things are absolute; and the only things that should be discussed in terms of what’s real or not with empty force etc; 1, someone in your level has a high level of controllable energy.2, everyone has an “aura”! If you were to not be your own skeptic, and honestly set up a rapore( trustworthy) connection to someone, you would physically be able to manipulate them through your energy field(auric connection) for good, bad or indifferent...The more sincere connection; the more “miraculous” results.
