Hi neighbor, I'm from the Seneca area around Lake Hartwell. I'm glad a stumbled on your video as I am in the market for a torch setup for general fabrication. The propane seems to be a nice and more affordable option over acetylene. I appreciate your explanation and insights on this topic. Be safe friend.

We use propane and oxygen for thermite welding and cutting as you said RR track apart. I have learned since ive started working out here for a major RR that definitely propane is better . Worked on track Maintenance for around 10 years now mainly in the welding side . Welded for the Marine Corp for 10 years as well .

Yes, you are right. I think foe the type of work you do, propane would be the better choice. Mainly for the portability of it.

Here we have Atwoods Farm Supply store, they have a deal with AirGas to sell their bottles (Air Gas seems higher than Wesco). Open from 7:00 to 9:00PM M-S , Sun AM? to 7:00 pm and you can get propane there too.

Jason: you might start doing like other youtubers do and get a Amazon affiliate store/ link to get a small commission on say a regulator set, torch set, ect. Might pay for your memory cards. What kind of set up do you use to get your gas rig in and out of the truck or do you leave it in? I know there is a special cap you can get that leaves the regulators installed.

This sounds almost too good to be true.. are there really any downsides to running a propane setup over acetylene? I've just started teaching myself to weld (tig and stick, got mig covered) and am needing a torch set up, if there are few to no downsides I will be going this route for sure.

The only difference is that you can't weld with it, but you can braze. But heating up, cutting, it's the best choice really. And far cheaper and more convenient.

@@AllStarWeldingSC thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. I am picking up my argon tank this weekend and was going to price an oxy/acet tank combo but knowing this I'm gonna go ahead and just rent an oxy tank while I'm there and start looking at regulators.

@jadeolin8514 I never thought about it, but that is another advantage of propane over acetylene. The tank!! Buying an acetylene tank is a huge investment. They are expensive. I already have 4-5 prioane tanks laying around my shop. But I bought one from one of those swap out places. Blue Rhino I think it's called. I took off the plastic wrap that was around it because as you use the propane it creates ice around it. I didn't want that moisture getting trapped under it and causing rust. I get it filled at a local hardware store for $10, and they fill it more than a swap out place does. For my regulators, I went to Amazon and got the Oxy/Propane set from SUA, I think it was. It's just a regulator, no since in spending a fortune. It's the green and orange set. Make sure to get a type T hoses made for propane. And definitely don't forget the flash arrestors. I got the kind that go on the regulator end instead of the torch end, to make the torch smaller and lighter. I also put on so.e quick connects on the torch end of the hose. Not necessary, but it's handy to have because in my shop I tend to swap out my torches often.. Good luck and enjoy. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me at [e-mail]
