actually after a close look I think I see what I did wrong; I was getting the ring balloons before the checkpoint, meaning I got speed shoes instead of 20 rings :P So yeah, look out for that guys

When I go through the last check point it gives me a Speed Up instead of a 20 ring like it did with yours...

You probably know this by now, so sorry if I'm being redundant: 70 rings at checkpoint = 20 rings. 80 rings gives you a speed up. Try to have 70-79 rings when you hit a checkpoint.
