This month offers long holidays, especially for Chinese New Year. To take advantage of lower travel costs and avoid the crowds, I scheduled my work break for the middle of the month. During this time, I had the opportunity to explore Tainan, a city rich in history and culture.
___
~ Day One: Chikan Tower and Shennong Street ~
On the first day of my trip (2025-1-13), I visited two iconic attractions in Tainan City.
The first stop was Chikan Tower, a historical landmark built in the 17th century by the Dutch. This site is one of Tainan’s most popular tourist destinations, offering a glimpse into the city's colonial past.
Next, I explored Shennong Street, a charming area adorned with Japanese-style decorations. The street is lively, with many young visitors enjoying the quaint atmosphere. It’s an excellent place to take photos, shop for souvenirs, and experience local culture.
~ Day Two: Nature, History, and Culture ~
The second day of my trip (2025-1-14) was packed with diverse attractions.
I began with a visit to the Sicao Green Tunnel, where I took a relaxing boat cruise through a lush mangrove forest. The arched greenery over the narrow waterway created an almost magical atmosphere, making it one of the most extraordinary natural experiences in Tainan.
From there, I headed to Anping Fort, another 17th-century site located in Tainan’s historic Anping District. This fort provides fascinating insights into Taiwan’s history during the Dutch colonial period. Its harbor views and historic ambiance make it a popular spot for visitors.
The last place of the day was National Museum of Taiwan History, which tells Taiwan’s story through exhibits on its cultural, historical, and social evolution. The museum’s interactive displays and multimedia presentations made the visit engaging and informative.

Reflections on Tainan
This was my first visit to Tainan, Taiwan’s former capital city. It reminded me of Ayutthaya in Thailand, as both cities are rich in historical significance. Tainan’s food is another highlight-its flavors surpassed those of Taipei’s cuisine in my opinion. The city’s culinary offerings, combined with its rich history, made this trip unforgettable.
Travel Tips
For anyone planning to explore Taiwan, I highly recommend renting a car. It gives you the freedom to travel anywhere without restrictions, making the journey much more enjoyable.
