"Maybe if you light a candle and walk around it three times you summon a high-capacity rail service with a 5-minute off-peak frequency" Your jokes never disappoint, Mr. Set! Also, as someone who has recently come back from a holiday in Tokyo where those very much are a thing and are the norm, yeah it really makes you crave for standards to dramatically improve down here - your suggestions for a Caulfield upgrade to enable cross-platform transfers is a perfect example. Tokyo is like Mecca for railfans, I could've spent a whole extra week there just exploring the railways. Though the fact that they still operate under the pre-WWII paradigm of having a bunch of different systems all owned and operated by different companies and organizations with no TfL or PTV-like entity to centrally manage and brand everything makes things _really_ confusing as a tourist - I gather that locals probably only use the trains of the company that has a station closest to where they live for their daily activities, only venturing outside on the rare occasion they need to go further afield (such as to get to the Shinkansen to get out of Tokyo).
@jmckenzie9626 күн бұрын
Oh and I didn't even realize this while I was there, but apparently many of Tokyo's subway lines allow different companies' trains to run through them, kinda like how wayyyy back in the day the Metropolitan line used to also allow the GWR to use its tracks as a central London connector for their commuter trains which ran as far out as Buckinghamshire. Well they still do that shit in Tokyo right now! Again, very much operating under what in the West would be pre-WWII, pre-central management philosophy and extra confusing for foreigners, but super convenient to have that extra downtown connectivity (and also point-to-point connectivity to go through the subway to get to a different side of Tokyo) for users of train companies that wouldn't have a direct one otherwise.

@damocooper41776 күн бұрын
Anzac is the southernmost underground station, with Box Hill being the previous title holder, and Flagstaff very narrowly rounding out the top three. South Yarra is another station that is like Glen Huntly and Melbourne Central without needing to cross a road to access a tram in one direction.
@Taitset6 күн бұрын
I wasn't counting Box Hill because it's a 'built over' station rather than actually being underground - although I get that that distinction can be a bit shaky, especially with cut-and-cover underground stations.

Interesting, the lift from the surface was not working. Hopefully it will be when the station opens. But does that lift go all the way down to the platform? As that would seem to bypass the tap in gate? Or does that mean getting out of the lift on the -1 level concourse and then finding a 2nd lift to get down to the actual platform? If so, then it is highly inconvenient.
@Taitset6 күн бұрын
It might have been usable on request for the tour, I'm not sure. Yes it's one lift to the concourse, then a second to the platform.
@Jules_Diplopia6 күн бұрын
@@Taitset That is what I thought. But two separate lifts is an annoying inconvenience, for those of us in a wheelchair. What happens when one fails. And of course access to the trains is more likely to be obstructed as 2 lifts means double the chance that access will be blocked by one of them. I do wish that architects and designers would put themselves in our "wheels" before signing off on these buildings.
@Taitset6 күн бұрын
@Jules_Diplopia At this particular station it might have been difficult to find an above ground location directly above the platform- but I know what you mean, I've found it very annoying using Parliament with a pram, especially with the lifts quite a long way apart.
