The name “Chinese Taipei” is sure to be heard at the Olympic Games this year, just like many other international sporting events. Some may recognize this team, while others are probably confused about where to find their country on a map. This is a documentary of how the official name of Taiwan’s sports teams (OR Team Taiwan) came to be.
It all started when the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949. A series of events unfolded leading to a 1981 decision to re-name Taiwan’s sports teams as team “Chinese Taipei.” A choice with lasting repercussions that are continuously felt in Taiwan to this day.
The story behind “Chinese Taipei” and the contention surrounding an ongoing identity crisis is about much more than meets the eye. Director Garret M. Clarke conducted interviews with athletes, sports professionals, and spectators alike because it was important to hear “Taiwanese people express their opinions in their own way.”
The name “Chinese Taipei” is a struggle for political power that dictates an athlete’s right to play as much as it denies sports fans and children around the world an opportunity to connect with Taiwan. @@orgncc 其實從二戰結束開始到今，台澎就是屬於盟軍的軍事托管區，中日和約只賦予了中華民國對台澎兩島的治權，以及台澎居民暫時的中華民國國民身份，並不包含主權轉移，當年蔣介石政府要逃來台灣的時候就曾經被美國拒絕過，但委員長不管，好真的來了，美國要求放棄金馬用台澎用台灣開一個新局，委員長也不要，造就了如此尷尬的局面，也為金馬居民帶來無盡的戰火。 好不管過去了，現在如果沒有北京武力威脅，台灣就不需要一直在統獨議題上打轉很快就能完成修法了，我個人是有信心能看到那天到來，但目前的狀況的確讓人感覺到疲憊。

What the video didn’t mention is that we are not only restricted to using the name “Chinese Taipei” and prohibited from displaying our national flag, but we also can’t have anything with the word “Taiwan” appear at the venue. Even if it’s just a random spectator holding a handwritten sign, or someone using Zhuyin (a phonetic system only understood by Taiwanese people) to spell out the pronunciation of Taiwan, it would be confiscated by the staff. This year at the Olympics, there were even instances where people had signs showing the shape of Taiwan on a map forcibly taken away.

Thank you for raising this issue. The main reason most Taiwanese seems not too upset about this is because they are educated to think that this "Chinese" does not mean "Belonging to China," but instead means something like "Ethnically related to Chinese culture." They are stuck thinking in it's Chinese translated term. Or, in short, their English is not good enough to grasp the seriousness of the problem.

I first saw that Chinese Taipei moniker back in the early 80s while watching the Little League world series telecast. Funny, as I looked back into the early history of Little League baseball, the ROC flag and "Taiwan" was used whenever they competed at Williamsport.

I'm Taiwanese. Thank you for this great video. In 1949, the KMT was defeated by the CCP（Chinese Communist Party) and fled from China to Taiwan, ruling Taiwan as the "Republic of China". Taiwan did not have a second political party until 1987. Before that, the KMT was one-party dominant system and there was no freedom of speech. The KMT believed that they were Chinese and came to Taiwan only temporarily, so they did not like and refused to use "Taiwan" to participate in the Olympics. After 1987, Taiwan became a democratic country, and in 2019 Taiwan is the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. Most Taiwanese identify themselves as "Taiwanese", but changing the constitution of the "Republic of China" is very complicated, and China will also use this as an excuse to attack Taiwan. Referendum of 2018 "Do you agree to use "Taiwan" as full name to apply to participate in all international sports events and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?" 45.2% agreed and 54.8% disagreed. The big reason was that the KMT claimed that it could not participate in the Olympics without "Chinese Taipei". Many people voted disagree because they fear changing the name will prevent athletes from participating. Taiwan is obviously a country, but it cannot participate in the United Nations due to threats and intimidation from China. Cannot join the WHO, even though Taiwan has done the best in COVID-19 prevention in the world. This is a very sad situation.

But just remember, no matter what you call it--the Republic of China(ROC), Taiwan, or Chinese Taipei in some cases--it is an independent and democratic country seperated from The People's Republic of China(PRC). 3:40 It's not true that "there can only be one team per country." British and all European countries managed to make all those teams of their colonies. As long as you are allowed to establish an Olympic Committee, you can participate in Olympic events using the name of your Olympic Committee. We were not allowed to name our Olympic Committee Taiwan or ROC when we applied for it. It's all about the IOC standing with PRC and bullies athletes from Taiwan/ROC. Shame on IOC, while all the western countries have been promoting self-identity - let people identify as who they are. IOC rather stand with the power and $, than justice. Many interviees misunderstood, we do NOT have to be recognized as an independent country to rename our Olympic committee. We just need to be allowed to do so by IOC.

Thank you for your video. It accurately explains the origin of the matter and also describes the troubles faced by Taiwanese people. Most Taiwanese people want to use Taiwan’s name, but many people in China do not identify with Taiwan and do not identify themselves as Taiwanese. We insist on calling it the Republic of China, a name that is not recognized internationally. Most of these people are from the KMT, the second largest political party (which was defeated by the People's Republic of China and fled to Taiwan). In addition, China used political power to unite other countries to suppress it, which led to the use of the strange name TPE for decades. Thank you again for your video! This can help more people understand Taiwan’s complicated national conditions.

It's a really good documentary film. But there's one really important fact missing, is that ''Chinese Taipei' is referred to as 'Chinese Olympic Committee (Taipei)', reflecting ROC government's stance to still claim rightful representative of China. That's why it refused to be called Taiwan in Olympic arena, the proposal was actually acceptable by PRC back then. The controversial name at least shows a historical fact, that ROC insisted to be labeled as a 'Chinese' territory. If back in 1970s ROC accepted re-labelled as Taiwan, it wouldn't be able to claim whole China lawfully, which is no longer the political principle of ROC any more.

(中文見下) Thanks a lot for the effort put into this but please allow me to point out 2 errors: (1) 02'53'' - the Chinese Civil War didn't erupt in 1945 - it had been ongoing for decades before that and culminated in the loss of the entire territory of mainland China by the ROC government. (2) 05'08' - "Taiwan" has never been expelled by the UN, it was "the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek" (UN Resolution No.2758). This is very important to clarify as it implies, despite the unlikelihood, that Taiwan should have the rights to "join" (rather than "return to" in the ROC's view) the UN. I'd really appreciate if the voice over could be updated. I am a Taiwanese and a citizen of the Republic of China. Taiwan is the only territory owned by the Republic of China today. I will not be dissatisfied just because the name of the Republic of China has not changed. However, Taiwan now does not belong to the People's Republic of China, nor does it belong to China. I will always be proud of my country, the Republic of China, Taiwan, and proud to be a Taiwanese. I hope that one day China will stop using hegemony over Taiwan and recognize and face up to the fact that Taiwan, the Republic of China, has officially become an independent entity. Otherwise, it will always be China’s shame.

多數台灣人對於自己的國家是什麼，自己是誰，都有錯誤的認知。首先，台灣是不是一個國家？當然不是，從來不是，未來也不可能是。中華民國是不是一個國家？當然是，從1912年成立至今一直都是一個國家。中華民國的領土包含什麼？根據中華民國憲法，包含大陸地區，台灣地區（台澎金馬），後者是實質控制的領土。但即便前者不實質控制，並不代表中華民國有曾放棄過大陸領土。中華民國是否代表中國？從中華民國憲法的角度來說，中華民國繼承了滿清的領土，也在1945年代表中國接受了台灣，因此中華民國當然是中國，台灣也當然是中國領土。如果台灣不是中國領土，為何開羅宣言和波茨坦公告會要求日本將台灣“歸還”（注意是歸還而不是轉交）給中國，而且是給中華民國？1949年中華人民共和國成立後以及1971年中華人民共和國進入聯合國後，中華民國的國際承認當然受到了影響，但這並不代表中華民國可以或是應該改變自身的立場。從“一個國家”變成“不是一個國家”，從“代表中國的國家”到“代表台灣的國家“。所以1945年後的台灣人是什麼？是中華民國國民，中國人，中華民國領土台灣省/島/地區上面的人。1895-1945年期間的台灣人是什麼？是日本人。如果台灣人對於”中華台北“這個名字有不滿，可以嘗試用”中華民國“來爭取，但絕對不可能用”台灣“這個名字。因為中華民國是國家，而台灣不是，這就是多數台灣人不願意去面對的真相。 中華民國和中華人民共和國是什麼關係？當然不是國與國關係，而是一個中國下的兩個政府、政權。兩岸的憲法都主張兩岸是一個中國，只是目前對於“誰代表這個中國”有歧義，但兩個代表，兩個政府，不代表是兩個國家。中華蘇維埃，中華民國北洋政府，南京政府，都是出現在中國這片土地上的政權，但都不是國家。
