Taiwin's Cycling Challenge 4 EHRA

Hi, I am Taiwin Garoeb,
I am the Head Elephant Guard for Elephant-Human Relations Aid (EHRA) in my conservancy, Sorri Sorris. And I am raising money for my Elephant Guard Team!
Our Elephant Guard team is 5 wo/men strong and together, we respond to human-elephant conflict covering an area of over 6,000 sq km in Namibia’s northwest - which is a HUGE area.
I conduct outreach and training for school children and adults to educate about elephants, safety around elephants and how to avoid human-elephant conflicts. Should conflicts occur, I investigate immediately, help to fix the property the elephants damaged and explain how this could be avoided in the future.
Sometimes, I have to guard homesteads and gardens at night when elephants are close-by. In the past, I had to protect a garden at midnight, trying to fend the elephants off by using my voice, a powerful torch and an airhorn. It worked!
I also share the information about the whereabouts of collared elephants which helps people prepare and stay safe.
I love my job. It’s very fulfilling to see the change in people and conservation. Because if people don’t appreciate or at least accept their elephants, then there is no future for elephants on our lands.
My job requires me to be fast-- I have a bicycle which I LOVE and which I will use to complete my challenge. BUT… sometimes I must travel very far distances and some tracks lead through riverbeds and very thick sand, slowing me down. Which is why I decided …

EHRA UK’s mission is to assist in raising funds to implement practical solutions that help combat elephant-human conflict, and thereby secure a future for Namibia’s desert elephants. This is done through a holistic approach which includes building protective walls around waterpoints, educating locals on conflict mitigation tactics, continuous monitoring of the different elephant herds and the provision of solar water pumps to replace costly diesel reliant pumps.
