And what is the difference between recreation and wilderness area? I've been hiking this area for years and don't like the sound of "recreation" area...

Thanks for the question! Designated wilderness areas are always treated the same way, as they are always guided by the Wilderness Act of 1964. The way National Recreation Areas are treated can depend on the enabling legislation. In the case of the proposed Scandia National Recreation Area, we are advocated a highly protected status with no motorized recreation, no permanent developments (resorts, roads and the like). Very similar to the highly protected Allegheny Front, Cornplanter, and Tracy Ridge National Recreation Areas (designated in 1984).
