Pretty cool that Hakita himself confirmed that Take Care was actually a reference to The Caretaker. Leyland's work had more of an influence on people than I originally thought.

The Caretaker is still pretty huge, it has a really active and passionate community. I bet we'll see more references to it in all kinds of media. But I recall Hakita mentioning that he deliberately put all these references to semi-obscure music in his game to push people out of their musical comfort zones and encourage them to try new music. @Thaddius Butler V2 is annoying, but he leaves wide windows when he jumps straight up near walls (use the shotgun+parry projectile boost) and when he dashes straight towards you (shottie with a couple chargepumps will chunk him good and give you health). Stay on the move the rest of the time, taking potshots whenever you can but focus on dodging until he opens up. If you use the projectile boost it'll be easy to get the style S rank, I didn't know this and got my first P rank through headshotting him with the magnum... suffice to say, it was tough.

Really like your post as well. As you've noticed, this isn't an edit on the actual 'Take Care' track but on it's source, which is Russ Morgan's "Were you foolin'?" Since you seem interested in the work, I'll leave a small description of the edit below. I took the original track ( archive.org/details/RussMorganOrchestra78rpmCollection/01-04+Were+You+Foolin'.m4a ), slowed it down by 25% and rearranged some parts so the singing is cut out and I have a proper ending. I took that cut version and reverbed it twice, the first filter making it slightly more wet-sounding and the second making the tone repeat a few times (you can notice this at the end of this track). This gives the track this uncanny empty-ballroom feeling. I don't know how The Caretaker makes his tracks, but I know for sure it's a harder procedure, but this is for the maymays, you know?

Still listening to this on repeat after all this time. It's more compelling than the actual Caretaker albums, if only because I associate it with something I already enjoyed. There are multiple other versions of "Were You Foolin'" by other bands. If you ever come back to a project like this one, it would be awesome to hear an unfamiliar version of a familiar song at some point, just to mix it up without changing too much. If you want to move on to other projects, I get it, but I'm obsessed with how well you replicated the Caretaker style and I want to figure out how you made it. If you don't make another song like this, I will! It's too enjoyable to have only a few minutes' loop at a time. I want another song to put into a playlist with it, but I want it to feel like it's almost the same song!

I was just playing ultrakill in the dark at around 1 in the morning and I found out that if you pause your game as the terminal is opening up you can make “take care” slower. I did this without knowing and got chills down my spine as I heard basically this

I may like Dusk more than Ultrakill on gameplay, but aesthetically Ultrakill has way more going on, and it works out fantastically for it. The inclusion of this song (obviously not this edit but you get the point) definitely cements, in my mind, the tone NB was going for when making the game.

absolutely. ultrakill's mix of styles and aesthetics is stunning. especially because it everything fits together so well. dusk has pretty much only tried to be campy and although it succeeded in everything it tried, it wasn't nearly as ambitious. (dont forget it started the whole boomer shooter wave though, without Dusk there would be no Ultrakill)
