Establish the straight melody up front. THEN swing it, blues it, whatever you want. You started out stretching the hook. A Train sort of demands the player(s) "Prove they can do" the ii V I turnaround before taking liberties with it. ESPECIALLY liberties that stretch the 8ths into something "easier". If you don't establish the resolve, the tensions will have no where to go. On Cosmetics - I understand the 55s mic look. But in this project it's distracting. Put it on a stand or use a mic that's not a visual distraction when hand held. Vox tone very appropriately non-nasal. Pretty front singer with appropriate facial expressions, all diluted by that big Shure Elvis.
