My full guitar and bass cover of Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt, probably my favourite Mars Volta song. I did cut out a bit of ambient noise before the Robotalk solo as there was no guitar or bass in it, I hope you enjoy :)

that's an interesting picking style you have, using your thumb and middle, with your index adding some control and pinky stabilizing on the pick guard (I do that too). really efficient alternate picking and conservation of motion, but with great feeling too. just an amazing song, and a fantastic cover that does it justice. also, those bass lines! it really does what it's intended to do, in laying a rhythmic floor along with the drums so the guitar can go nuts and play with odd meter (that interlude is hard to count!), chromaticism, counterpoint, etc. I realize I'm complimenting the songwriting as much as your playing, but you really brought those elements out in your playing, and it makes me want to actually get my guitar out again to practice.

Yes it's not something I realised I did until recently! I'm self taught so must have just picked it up like that and it stuck ever since. I really appreciate the kind words, it's always really interesting to hear someone else's take on music and what stands out to them, thank you! And do pick up the guitar again! I think mars volta releasing a new album is a sign that it's time to get playing. Thanks again for watching and commenting 🙏

This song is so weird because it's like there is no chorus, but also there's 3 choruses. Is it "a mass of gallon sloth..." "knife me in..." or "You take the veil..." ?
@Bilfrado_ Жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure! I guess I kinda view the "take the veil" part as a pre chorus, then the "mass of gallon sloth" part as a main chorus and the "knife me in" as a secondary chorus, it's a very interesting structure

Hey man, do you have any tabs or resources for this at all? This is a perfect cover, I’d like to learn these parts
@Bilfrado_3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks so much! There are quite a few tabs available online, but if there's any bits you'd like to learn that they don't cover I'd be happy to write some out for you! :)
@nitro52472 жыл бұрын
@@Bilfrado_ I was actually wondering, what’s the tab look like during the “knife me in” section? I can see you’re doing something different from the other tabs online, with a lot more movement across the guitar
@Bilfrado_2 жыл бұрын
@@nitro5247 Hi! Yeah I changed it a bit there, I thought octave chords sounded a bit better than just playing the root on the E string during the 6 - 3 - 8 - 3 - 9 bit. I chose to play those chords all on the E string as it got me in position to do the 8 - 10 hammer on on the B string at the end of the phrase. Sorry it's hard to describe over a KZbin comment haha, give me a DM if that hadn't cleared it up and I'll write some tabs for you!

@Bilfrado_2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if there's a name for that style.. it's like nothing I've heard before. If you're interested I could make a tutorial video for that part. Thanks for watching!
@jonfuller1792 жыл бұрын
@@Bilfrado_ I hear it a lot in MV adjacent bands (Warpaint, john/flea/omar jamming). I'm not sure how much the rest of the community is interested & I'd hate for you to create a whole vid for one person. But that being said; I'll watch it 1000 times, lol.
@Bilfrado_2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I definitely see what you mean, it's a very unique way of playing, staccato winding notes in and out of key as if a spiders dancing around on the fretboard. I've had a few other questions about that part so I'll definitely get a video out on it in the next couple of weeks

Dude, I really need tabs for the "Knife Me In" part. The way you're playing this sounds a bit different from the tabs I've found online. I'd like to learn your version. Edit (20 minutes later): nevermind. I just taught it to myself by watching you over and over a few times! Thanks for posting this! You play great. I love fenders. Ive got a squier tele and a Fender Strat. I like your guitar.
