I don't do any swordsmanship but I find these videos helpful in understanding my own martial art. Something we talk about often is Tempo but also Space/Distance. Overall I like to conceptualize combat in terms of a game of Chess except we aren't limited to one move or one piece.

fighting is very much a mental game as well as physical

I also think that being patient and finding the right moment of opportunity is a very good approach, instead of trying to enforce preset ideas into the situation.

Very interesting, most move in fencing takes up time (tempo). Try to counter your opponent when he's committed to do one certain move (in the tempo). And mask your tempo (by not taking big steps for example) as much as possible so your opponent has a hard time countering you.

Endlich habe ich verstanden, was man mir vor Jahren beim Langschwert (offensichtlich) erklären wollte bzw. hätte genau so erklären sollen, wenn es darum ging, "im Vor zu bleiben". Sehr gut!

Very good and informative video. Pretty much spot on when it comes to tempo and the need to control it. For me was also nice that Cornelius refereed to sport fencing :) Just wonder is there any treatises that talk about counter attacks in sword & buckler, or is that something that has been developed as a group/individual through sparring and learning?

As a swordplayer(Fighter), i would say that these methods are ok but only when you practice againts someone who does the same style of combat and the person do not have the intention of making real damage. This isn´t a a bad thing at all, because this is how they train to win in their enviroment of combat style. Whetener, they have all clear about how to move, how to counter. congrats

Actually, my experience is different. And I would not bother to train something that does not work against any type of opponent. this works against everybody. It is only that those who are ignorant of tempo get beaten more quickly. Usually in the very first tempo!

I also see a connection with sparring to that. That is not about doing things slowly, but carefully. To be aware of possibility to cancel or change actions in their first stages, if I understand it well. Of course, this is not only or the most important aspect of fight, however it is pretty good offensive technique.

Anyone else notice the sleeping guy at 14:20? I mean, cmon people are trying to learn here and this looks outright disrespectful. Especially to the craft. I've devoted myself to this for years. I can only wish I was at this place. But this guy is sleeping? What the hell is wrong with him? Tell me he wasn't sleeping.

Jet-lagged fighter after 1.5 days of constant free play. I guess we can forgive him.

Roland Warzecha Fine. But, I don't think that even that could cause me from paying attention and listening to the class. I'd be too excited. But hey, whatever.
