This video introduces the "Kawanakajima Battlefield" where Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi fought during the Warring States Period and the surrounding cherry blossom viewing spots!
■Kawanakajima Battlefield Historic Site Park (Nagano Prefecture)
Kawanakajima Battlefield is famous for the battle between Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi, and is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot with about 100 cherry trees in full bloom in spring. It is said that during the "Battle of Kawanakajima," Takeda's army set up its main camp near here, and a statue of Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi in single combat stands in the Hachiman Shrine on the site.
The area has been developed as "Kawanakajima Battlefield Historic Site Park" and is also home to the Nagano City Museum, which exhibits materials related to astronomy (planetarium), geology, history, and ethnology. Adjacent to the museum, there is a waterfront plaza, a kaya-buki roofed arbor, a lawn area, and a babbling brook with natural stones, which is usually used as a place for local people to stroll and relax.
■Ruins of Matsushiro Castle (Nagano Prefecture)
Matsushiro Castle is located slightly south of Nagano City and is designated as a national "Historic Site" and one of the "100 Great Castles of Japan". The castle was built by Shingen Takeda during the Warring States Period for his invasion of Shinano, and was developed as a base for the Kawanakajima area and called "Kaizu Castle". At that time, a two-story turret was built on top of the stone walls, offering a broad view of the Kawanakajima Plain. The castle is also well known as one of the stages of the "Battle of Kawanakajima".
In 2004, the turreted gate, wooden bridge, stonewalls, earthen mounds, and moat were reconstructed and recreated as close to their appearance in the Edo period as possible. It is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, and the best time to view the cherry blossoms is usually around mid-April.
■Nagano City Joyama Park (Nagano Prefecture)
Nagano City Joyama Park is a vast urban park located just east of Zenkoji Temple, in the center of Nagano City. As the name implies, Joyama was the site where Yokoyama Castle was built in the Nanbokucho Period, and was the main camp of Kenshin Uesugi during the Battle of Kawanakajima in the Warring States Period.
The park is also home to the Nagano City Joyama Zoo and the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum, and with about 470 cherry trees planted, it is known as one of Nagano City's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots.
