The most terrifying part about this movie is the fact that this is happening all the time. Human trafficking is a horrible business that still very much exists. And that this movie is a watered down look into it is just terrifying.
@TeemoTemosson Жыл бұрын
Human trafficking IRL is quite kosher I'm told.
@Matrim42 Жыл бұрын
Eh, this is a pretty sensationalized version of human trafficking. It’s pretty rare that they just kidnap people, I won’t say it never happens, but it’s almost unheard of. The vast majority of human trafficking is done by deception. They target poor people in countries without robust social safety nets, offer them a job opportunity if they’re willing to travel to another country. Then once they’re there the traffickers hold their passport or other vital documentation, so the person is unable to leave. They’re usually in the country illegally, so they feel they cannot go to the cops. At that point their captors exploit them. Either sexually, or for their labor. Sometimes they are paid, generally not enough to do anything significant, which is also used to control them. Often the captors frame their low (or nonexistent) wages as payment for their travel and lodging. It’s less about physically restraining people and more about psychologically restraining them. Kidnapping people off the street carries far more risk than reward. It’s harder to do, takes much more effort, and attracts far more attention. Tourists in say, Paris, are very VERY unlikely to run into that sort of trouble. The biggest risk to them is being robbed or otherwise ripped off. Eastern Europe is a bit more dicey, but even then robbery is still the much bigger risk. When I lived in Europe you’d occasionally hear about folks going out to Slovakia or the Czech Republic and getting waylaid by Russian or Ukrainian mobsters, being forced to withdraw money from ATMs and such, but then they’d let you go, because it wasn’t worth the trouble to do anything else other than take the easy money.

One of the things I liked was that they had Liam Neeson fight realistically. Usually they have two men fight each other in a very extended cinematic way. The reality is a single blow on the right place will incapacitate a man, and the typical human body can't handle many blows. If you noticed, Williams favored strike was a blow to the throat. Executed properly, the fight's over right there. His "I have certain skills" speech has become famous. If you haven't watched it yet, I strongly suggest Denzel Washington in Man on Fire. His character has the same ruthless drive to rescue someone he cares about.

This is one movie that critics didn't like, calling it clichéd and brainless action, but audiences disagreed -- as did I. I think what critics missed is how much Liam Neeson elevated the role. LOL, well it is. It's lazy to have a group with who is easy to hate and have the hero go after something so obvious. It's easy to get into because it manipulates human emotions. When you see a lot of films you realise how easy it is to get people worked up with a the right music and some imagery, regardless of how realistic the things happens on screen are. People like McDonalds, doesn't mean it's great food - just your average punter has no taste.

Great reaction as always, Dash! I recall when this movie came out it was an unexpected hit because it was released early in the year when studios typically release projects that aren't expected to be popular and just want to recoup some of their costs, and it far exceeded expectations. It also reinvented Liam N's career iirc as prior to this he was mostly known for his dramatic work and not as an action star, but that changed completely after this came out..... No, it's just that one parent was more worried about the child's maturation, developing self-reliance, and independence than about their safety. It's a balancing act that all parents face. You're right, Dasha, most daughters aren't going to have fathers with that kind of ability, which was just what was needed for handling this particular crisis. However, many fathers have abilities useful for handling more conventional kinds of crisis, and almost all would do anything to safeguard their daughters. In her book Too Close to the Falls, Catherine Gildiner, who had an uneven relationship with her father (as in Taken, she thought him 'overprotective'), relates once having to call him to come and retrieve her from someplace out of town, because she didn't feel safe. Although it was three o'clock in the morning and she was waking him from a sound sleep, he just said, "Where are you? I'm on my way."

It's an Audio-Technica AT875R, a short shotgun mic typically used on a camcorder - and she's got a shock mount for it. The mic itself is about $150, and the generic shotgun shock-mount is about $10. Not especially high-end, but A-T makes quality gear even at their lower price points. These mics won't give you the bass response of an EV RE20 or a Shure SM7, but her voice isn't low enough for that to matter anyway - for her, it's perfect. Note that this is a condenser microphone, which means that it requires 48V "Phantom Power" to work, so you need an audio interface that supplies Phantom Power, or an external Phantom Power supply to power the pic. This usually isn't a problem as even something like a $120 Focusrite Scarlett Solo has Phantom Power, but not all interfaces, and not all portable recorders, support Phantom Power.

Wow, such a *good* reaction! You cried a goodly amount in this one, but at least you got to see a really good & happy wrap-up, unlike some of the other ones! Yes, it's so horrible that these human-trafficking rings exist and contribute to all that misery! Normally, rescue-operations are more about using negotiations along with threats of exposure and other forms of coercion to rescue the girls, whether it's just one or two, or it's ten or fifteen ... getting them back is done as peacefully as possible. Maybe paying money is best, or maybe the rescue-group basically runs a 'sting operation' in conjunction with government agencies. When the situation 'goes hot', that's when the girls may get injured/killed. So, 'steady as it goes' is best ... but sometimes things 'go sideways', and an action-movie breaks out. Anybody who wants to - there are a few different organizations that are all about rescuing people &/or breaking the trafficking rings, and which you can donate to, to help fund them. Just make sure to do your 'due diligence' so you don't waste your money!

Liam Neeson did an *excellent* job in _"The Grey"_ ... but you might want to think carefully before watching it! The ending is a *major* downer! It's a story about struggling through harsh adversities, and surviving ... until you don't ...😩 No upbeat ending for that one!

It was an awesome ending. Sure they didn't show the fight but we can use our imagination.
