If the performance is indeed similar to the diesel,(and I don't see any reason for DP not to be honest about that) then the biggest issue for productivity is run time. And that is a pretty big issue, for sure. Really limits their niche. However, to be fair to Volvo, they aren't marketing this for general use, they are currently aiming at that niche market. If they can improve the runtime, or make the battery pack interchangeable like on a cordless power tool, they can expand their market, perhaps even into areas previously held by propane. Unfortunately, all you can do about the nuts, too many in government, who thing these are a simple replacement for IC engines as they sit, is educate the ignorant ones, and vote against the dogmatic ones.

Large scale power generation combined with good motors, even after considering transmission losses, tend to be more efficient than IC engines, so you're both moving and shrinking the tailpipe with these machines, if you're charging from the grid. Now, the above does not consider the environmental inpact of the manufacture of the electrical system, especially the batteries, vs the impact of manufacturing the diesel engine. Nor does it address the possibility of charging via generator, where the efficiency of the big power plants is lost.

Since carbon models have mufflers, are there anything to muffle the sounds of that electric whine? It lifted enough to lightly pick the back tires a bit so extra counter weight is definitely a first pick on the extras and I really think having one would increase chances of working inside of shopping mauls. The machines that you have now are really a middle man for the "a bit big for small job or just does" the bigger jobs because the operator can make or break a job. Best equipment won't cut the slack of a bad driver. Quit dang teasing Mike, Lt. Dan will have frame jacking issues if it sets too long/LOL

You talk about many subjects here. I'm a big fan of electric stuff, but I have to admit that the noise is way too loud. Volvo needs to work on that.
@tt7hvn3 жыл бұрын
Hey, at least they can replace the counterweight with a giant battery 🤷
@j.b.65773 жыл бұрын
So, is this like the cars where when the batteries die the replacements exceed the depreciated price of the machine? There are hundreds of thousands of electric cars already sitting that are useless and leaking chemicals and heavy metals back into the soil because their batteries are dead and the batteries vastly exceed the depreciated price of the car. IDK, I don't think that everything is being completely thought through before these things are being brought to market. It's just like those giant windmills that are rendered useless after about 10 years from what I've heard and there's no process for taking them down and no way to reuse or recycle anything... I'm not claiming to be the brightest bulb but, there's a lot of things that don't make since to me with all this electric stuff...

I totally agree.
@jdelbrid3 жыл бұрын
The Model 3 cost around $50k and the battery replacement cost is around $5k. There are companies that take the spent batteries for stripping the components for recycling. They are stored and wrapped in a way that does not allow them to leak into the soil.

@@jdelbrid Yes. and the batteries are good for about 300K miles.

One of the problems that the sales people are not going to tell you, is that if you are doing a lot of site work with these machines,, is that you have to purchase a generator, maybe 25kva or better, as you have to generate 440 volts 3 phase, then supply a very long extension lead, or the machine is useless until you return to your static charge point !!
@gayle48043 жыл бұрын
The batteries are beyond expensive, that would be my first question!

Please tell us what beyond expensive means.

Total cost of ownership should be less.

Electric units like that make a lot more sense than electric cars so I can see where these would be applicable to different situations very nice.

In what way do electric cars not make sense?
@lloydconner30343 жыл бұрын
When the batteries go dead and you recharge them this damages them and they do not last long. The other thing is what kind of batteries.

As with any equipment, proper care is essential. It is different than what you are probably accustomed to.

@@jbbuzzable Yes you are right about care, can you fix it like the older equipment i think not.

You got to have 3 machines to work a 12 hr day lol no shift work 👍👊 the wire on that backup noise would be cut lol
@archangel7293 жыл бұрын
I think they missed the boat on the batteries for more efficiency should have gone for a removable battery so when it all most dead change out the battery for a fully charged one like a reachtruck a parked machine is a costly inefficient machine ,working machine makes $$$ and thats what it boiles down to . Can't see this going much of anywhere my opinion . Peaceout

Then you'd need a machine just to swap battery packs, gotta be sever hundred pounds at least.

I would not be able to use the electric junk. 3 to 4 hr run time. I better get a long extension cord. Maybe it will charge as I'm digging. I think I will stick to the diesel version.

I wouldn't call it junk. If it doesn't work for your use, that's fine.

With the ring time/charge time problem, why wouldn't you just run it on live electricity? Like the big strip mining shovels. If you have power on the job, just run a cord to it. Do away with those worthless batteries.

Run time/charge time.

Good ? Not for sure
@lhr17013 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that so but those machines in strip mining don't move . They stay in one spot and load trucks all day . And when they do move it is only a short distance . If you are digging a trench you may have to move 1000 feet . And an 12 gage extension cord is not going to handle that the voltage drop would be tremendous . You would better off towing a generator behind you .
