Join me as I take the train from Mainz to Rüdesheim am Rhein! I will explain things I've learned about the trains as an American living in Germany. I will also show you around beautiful Rüdesheim am Rhein which is home to the Niederwalddenkmal, a massive monument erected in the 1880s, as well as the ruins of Burg (castle) Ehrenfels.
Check out my Merch! www.redbubble.com/people/kemc...
You can learn more about Niederwalddenkmal here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niederw...
I've had some really interesting and somewhat dramatic experiences on the trains here in Germany because of not knowing German and not being familiar with the system. If you want to hear some of my stories, let me know in the comments!
The restaurant I got the coffee at is called Villa Weil and is located at Rheinstraße 15, 65385 Rüdesheim am Rhein, Germany. Check it out if you can!
Hi! I'm Kelly and I am an American who lived in Germany for 18 wonderful months. While I lived abroad before in Turkey and had done quite a bit of traveling beforehand, those 18 months in Germany definitely broadened my perspective of Germany, Europe, and even the US in so many different ways! I wanted to share my perceptions with you guys through KZbin so that maybe you can gain context to things you've heard about, or learn new information or a different perspective, or maybe this is everything you've heard before and further confirms your world view. No matter what the reason, I hope that you enjoy my videos! Don't forget to subscribe to my channel and turn on notifications so that you always know when I'm posting new content :)

I had the same thought. With VRN (the regional trains) you might be using as you are living in Mainz, you can check out the "Ticket 24 Plus". It could be usefull when travelling to bigger cities, as you can normaly use the Buses, Streetcars and the subway system at your destination without being charged extra.

o 5 Germany is a very big country. I would suggest that you don't just stay in one city because although our railway system is very big the trains are a bit slow. The big cities always have a good connection, but to live in big cities is very expensive. If you just want to stay in one city Frankfurt am Main (Frankfort on the Main) would be the best place I think. You are very quick in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich. And you should buy a EURAIL Pass! This is much cheaper than buying single train tickets. EURAIL is just for not European people. If you live in Europe you can buy an INTERRAIL Pass.

kelly for me as a germam it is so refreshing, seeing you as a foreigner enjoying all those aspects of germany. As a german, you just blend all that stuff out and only see the negative things and the things that aren't working out so well and you just start to get kind of grumpy. Seeing you freaking out about everyday stuff like castles or the train traffic really helps opening up my eyes again and being grateful and proud for the positive aspects of my country!

Small correction, DB is *legally* a "private company" but 100% of all stock is owned by the federal government. There are also private regional train operators but only one long distance one (Flixtrain, the same guys that run Flixbus). Many "private" operators are (part-)owned by other countries' state owned railways.

Yup, until 1994 it was called "Deutsche Bundesbahn", and used the same DB logo. Train engineers and conductors were public officials, some still are, so they don't have the right to strike. Bundesbahn even had their own license plates on cars, the part which is the city or district on the license plates had a "DB". Same thing with the post, Deutsche Bundespost had BP and the Bundesgrenzschutz used BG. In the early 2000s the Bundesgrenzschutz was transformed into the Bundespolizei (federal police), and from then they use the BP. The Bundespost was splitted into two companies: Deutsche Post AG for postal and parcel service (parcel is DHL which is a subsidiary of the Deutsche Post). The other one is the Telekom for telephone services (subsidiary for cellphones is T-mobile, which should be known in the USA too).

+Jesus Gonzalez Even though the stock is government owned, they are for all practical purposes a commercial venture. The difference is that before 1994 it was a government authority whose job was to provide a service. Since then they have been a company whose job is to make a profit. A service to the public may or may not be a side effect of their profitmaking.

I am so happy you did not make the same mistake me and my friends did 40 year ago. We FIRST had a visit of the Rüdesheim destillery, having some free shots, then we got a Rüdesheimer Kaffee.... and then we took the cable car. Was surprises to see it set on fire, but of coffee with a strong liqour and creme fraiche on top many version exist, Irisch coffee, Hasselse coffee (with jenever) , Russian coffee (vodka) , those 3 you can often get in Belguim, in some bars all 3 , with 3 other less common options on top!

Minor correction: There's not only _one_ German railway company, there are _plenty_ (as you can see e.g. @ 2:29 > RheingauLinie). Before 2008, (the state-owned) Deutsche Bahn effectively had a monopoly on passenger transportation -- this has changed dramatically, at least in regards to regional lines. Fortunately, most of those companies have some kind of reciprocity agreement so that you don't need separate tickets per leg.

Yes you are right ...I totally forgot this thing...although I had latin in school and also I was a altar boy as I was a kid and I also did "sternsingen" but that´s 40 years ago... ...but both interpretations are right because the catholics in the dark ages (where this tradition came from) where truely obsessed by having ... "symbolic puns" so to say.... like this....but you have to keep in mind "nobody" spoke or understood latin at that time or could even read or write except monks and priests so they told the avarage man that these are the initials of the three wise men...it was a "simple explaination" for "simple people"..
@U13Kickers
@U13Kickers 6 жыл бұрын
Although the CMB explanation is correct, i hate that everyone thinks that it were three kings with these specific names that gave Christ those present. 1. Noone knows how many "kings" visited Jesus. everybody asumes three because of it being three presents. 2. They werent kings at all. They were astrologers and pagans so they were non-jews. 3. The names are never mentioned in the bible. The names are a tradition that isnt as old as you might think and 4. They arrive in Bethlehem a lot later than is depicted in the Crip-scenes you see in Germany. The bible clearly states that a) Jesus was around 2 years of age and b) that Mary and Joseph were living in a house at the time. So all you get fed are lies, lies, lies!
@michaelgrabner8977
@michaelgrabner8977 6 жыл бұрын
That is not really a lie it is just "symbolism" for the avarage people who couldn´t read or write and also had no clue about latin at all back than in the middle ages. So the bible doesn´t matter at all anyhow because at that time no avarage person could read it...and it was written in latin anyway which no one could understand except scholars... By the way the story is part of the "Mathäus gospel/evangel" So it is in fact part of the New testament ..but he didn´t mention how many of them but he mentioned the 3 allknown presents (Gold, Incense, Myrrh) which were so precious that everybody thought that they had to be kings.. At the oldest visual representations they were 3 white guys...called in the latin term for "Magicians" = 3 wise men..and 3 was always a symbolic holy number anyway ever since (holy trinity) .....and a bit later on one of them became black because they became a symbolism for the 3 (three again what a matching coinsistance for the glory of god) continents Europe Asia and Africa which was the whole known world at that time (america and australia wasn´t known at that time) and they also became kings to symbolise that Jesus is the king of all kings of the whole known world...that is how it was...symbolism for the simple people who were very superstitious by nature in believing in demons and old pagan rites , witches..and what the hack what else... By the way I´m an agnostic and not religious at all although I was raised as a catholic or should I say "because of".. ;-D There is an "old saying" which goes like this "Nobody cares about the truth main thing is that it is a strong story" That how politics works till today and religion was pure politics in the middle ages...
@U13Kickers
@U13Kickers 6 жыл бұрын
but a symbolism mustnt be a lie. and what do you call fact (like what is written in the gospels) and you add stuff that isnt supported by reality or history? I call that a full out lie!! an example for a symbolism that makes sense is saying that god is like a lion. Why? because in bible time a lion stood for power and might, and i dont know anybody who is more powerful than god

This also happens in the supermarket, when a new till opens, it's survival of the fittest, you can "overtake" someone that was originally in front of you in your queue. But it's not a case of being "evil", it's just that everybody does it, so if you don't want to end up always being last (nice guys finish last), you end up doing the same thing sometimes. Being German, i have simply adopted certain things, but without malicious intent, and i think i'm still quite respectful of how i queue-jump, i will give people enough time to claim their rightful space. Or i will always let the grandma in front etc. In other countries, i would completely adapt to their way of doing things, and if that means always behave completely orderly, i would do that too. Just wanted to say, some things are actually bad behaviour, such as people looking/staring at you for no apparent reason with a blank look on their face (which i don't do), and other things might be the way they are because it has become somewhat of a necessity to not get left behind, sadly.

Provocateur Actually the pricing system is quite complicated in Germany: For the trip between Munich and Rosenheim there are several tickets: If you look it up on the internet only the faires for long distance trains will appear, costing 20€ each direction. By taking the regional train which only goes 5 minutes slower it only costs 15€ each. But that’s not all. You can also take the Bayernticket which costs 27€, the Quer-Durchs-Land-Ticket (I think 35€) or the Guten-Tag-Ticket (22€). And of course you can combine your ticket for S-Bahn with the train. If you have a Semesterticket for the whole MVV area like I do, you only need a single ticket between Aßling and Rosenheim, only costing 5€ each 😂 Sometimes I don’t know how foreigners should understand that...

Quick tip for making the audio thing easier on you, of you edit in premiere pro: just add a Multiband Compressor to the entire audio track and activate the limiter. Preset "broadcast", put the limiter to -10dB and you're good to go. You can even save that as a preset.

@Kelly does her thing The Deutsche Bahn worker's proper title is "Schaffner" (pronounced shuffner) or "Schaffnerin" if female. It should be possible to buy a ticket from the Schaffner if the machine didn't work or if it was too late to buy a ticket, but you have to go search for them, if you try to fool them and only buy a ticket when getting controlled it won't work.

thank you!! and good to know. there was a time where the ticket machine only took 10 euro bills and lower, and i only had a 20 and i was absolutely panicking because i couldn't get a ticket. so i told them when i got on and they let me pay right there. i'm glad i didn't wait and risk it!

Beware since May the 1st the VIAS Company (2nd Train you took to Rüdesheim itself) does only allow for tickets to be bought on the train if the Machines are broken. Else you'll have to pay those 50€. (And the Schaffner will know when they are broken) Knowing Germany not having the right change probably wouldn't count. Oh and not all Train routes are run by the Deutsche Bahn. Some routes (like Frankfurt-Wiesbaden-Neuwied) are run by other private Companies.

only on far distance trains you could rely on buy tickets onboard (with an additional fee of several (10? 15?) euros and you are expected to ask the train crew before ticket inspection). On regional trains it depends on what exact company runs them. Even along the subsidaries of DB that varies. But in most cases you are expected to have a valid ticket when entering the train and can't buy it from the crew.

The letters C, M, B have two meanings: • They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. • They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross and the 17 is the last two digits of 2017 (the year). You can find this same blessing marking in some parts of the American Midwest (where original settlers were of Germanic origin).

Ed Price I was a "Sternsinger" as a kid, that's what you call the children who will sing at you front door and write the sign with blessed chalk, and our priest made it very clear that the acronym has nothing to do with the names. This makes totally sense because you bring the blessing by writing the christus mansionem benedicat onto the door.

Andreas: That's probably more theologically correct, but the name coincidence makes for strong folklore. I grew up in an area of the American Midwest where theological questions were answered in one of two ways; either "let's ask Father" or "Who cares?"

Conductor means Schaffner in German. Did you ever think about German names like f.e. Schmied, Schmiedel, Rüstmann, Rust or Meier/Müller, Vogt... all those names have exact meanings like Schmied is the Smith - those names refer to vintage times when people were called by the name of their profession - and then were changed by the use of dialects, so Schmied may have changed to Schmitt (f.e.). Just saying :)

The Railway Company "Deutsche Bahn AG" is actualy state owned - the German Federal State owns 100% of the company, eventhough there is a heated debate about privatizing / selling it. There is also no real subsidizing of the company directly, but there is a subsidizing of the infrastructure. So the federal state and the local state (and also often the citys) pay for new railway tracks, staitions and their repairs, just as they also subsidize the building of streets, airports and all other infrastructures. By european law the Deutsche Bahn (or more specificly it's doughter company DB Netz) has to allow competitors to use the infastructure on the same terms as the Deutsche Bahn. That's why many of the local trains are owend by competitiors of the DB. The second train you took was a train, if I saw it correctly, from the company "Vias GmbH" which is a privatly owend company. Often the the local trains are subsidized by the local citys because they are considered as part of the local transport system, but that is a big topic on it's own. I really liked the fast forward effect from your home to the train staition, that looked great :D

Only the long distance trains are not subsidized. The regional trains usually are payed for by the respective state. Basically these services are not offered by the DB but by the state, in many cases the DB is just the contractor that suplies that service. These contracts are renewed every 10 years or something like that and other companies can bid for the contract. The same thing goes for the local S-trains.

C-M-B +current year = Refers just to the "3 wise men" and not to a specific bible verse There is an very very old religous catholic tradition (from the dark ages till today) where on the 6th of January mainly round about 4-6 children where 3 of them are dressed like "the 3 wise men" and one another of them is holding a pole with a big star on the top travelling through their local areas collecting money for the poor while they are singing some old tradionally holy songs (that´s why they are called in german "Sternsinger" which literally means "Starsingers") and after that they bless the houses for having a good new year by writing down their initials at the top of the door which are C for Casper - M for Melchior - B for Balthasar which were the names of the 3 wise men...and the current year...just to show the others that they were already here --- because there are some of them doing this.... and it stays written down the whole year till the next 6th of January as a sign of blessing --- and also to show that this is a house where religous catholic people live ..because today not everybody is catholic or even religious and will open the door for them so it´s also a marker for them where to knock on the door as well...
@WimiBussard
@WimiBussard 6 жыл бұрын
C+M+B is actually a Latin phrase "Christus mansionem benedicat", saying that God may bless this house. It's a common misbelief that the letters are the initials of the Drei Heiligen Könige. I guess, that it's easier for the common people to remember three names than a Latin phrase, because Latin was basically only accessible for scholars back in the Middle Agges and is still not used at all today, although it is taught at advanced schools, e.g. im Gymnasium.
@michaelgrabner8977
@michaelgrabner8977 6 жыл бұрын
You are totally right but it is wrong to say it is a "misbelief" because you already mentioned that Latin was only accessible for scholars in order to become a monk or a priest back in the middle ages. And it was these monks and these priests who told the average people who couldn´t even read or write and for sure no latin all that these are just the initials of the 3 wise men simply because the simple people couldn´t do anything with this particular latin "magical" phrase....so they gave a simple explanation for simple people...and the "holy men" which they(priest,monks) were in the eyes of these people back than simply dictated by saying what the average man had to believe...so if they said "These are the 3 wise man" then they were the three wise man .. as simple as that..

well ... close. It's "Christus Mansionem Benedicat", indeed "may Goid bless this House". Inofficially, it''s alsp "Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar" because that inscription is applied by the "Sternsinger", Kids from the local parish dressed up as the Three Kings, when they travel the parish and ask for Donations for charity, at or around Three Kings Day (Jan 6th). The whole thing is a traditional custom in Catholic and Anglican areas in many European countries. The custom gets occasionally bad press in ignorant parts of the US, because traditionally one of the kids is either black or wearing blackface, because traditionally one of the three kings was thought to be black.

Well, I sometimes LOVE traveling by train, sometimes I hate it --- depending on whether the trains are (more or less) in time or not. I was a weekend commuter for many years (400-500 km single distance), so probably I have spent more time on trains than some DB employees (if they work _in_ a station at the counter or on the platform). About nine years ago my train from Cologne to Munich had a delay of about two hours (starting with 110 minutes in Cologne Trade Fair / Deutz, which is a BAD place to stay at temperatures below 0°C, and increasing to 130 minutes; we even had to change the train driver at some small station near Nuremberg, because of working time restrictions).

When I was in elementary school, we went to Rüdesheim for a birthday party. That day there was a huge thunderstorm just when we wanted to drive down the hill with the cable car, making the cable car stop with us being stuck in there.

Each year on the wonderful Feast of the Epiphany chalk is blessed at Church and people are invited to take some home and mark their homes with a prayer for blessing. The priests are also very happy to visit homes and do the blessing. Seeing the marking at the door is a gentle reminder of God’s blessing, and a sign to all of a Christian home. Using chalk either above the door, outside, or at the side of the door, outside or inside, the markings 20 + C + M + B + 13 are made, or (20+K+M+B). 20 and 12 being the year, C (K), M, B being the intitials of the traditional names of the wise men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, they can also stand for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, the Latin words meaning, May Christ bless this home.

I wish we had the germans autobahn too... Or at least up the limit here. 120km/h is really slow nowadays. Cars 30 year old can hit that speed.
@gaiaorigin9569
@gaiaorigin9569 6 жыл бұрын
Well, we do have speed limits on the Autobahn. Yes, in case there are no signs, you can, theoretically, drive as fast as you want on the Autobahn, but very often there are signs stating speed limits like 120 km/h or 130 km/h
@TruthNerds
@TruthNerds 6 жыл бұрын
Also, all the cars have been electronically limited to 250km/h for years, though there are companies that can (legally) remove many of these limits. The cars I had weren't able to exceed 160km/h anyway except on a downwards slope. :-)
@Kellydoesherthing

I think someone commented earlier to say that 60% of the Autobahn is without speed limits. I haven't fact checked that though
@TruthNerds
@TruthNerds 6 жыл бұрын
Sure you could die at 20km/h, but, assuming you're wearing the safety belt, that seems more of a freak accident. As for some actual numbers, the EU minimum standard requires at least a 50% survival chance at 63km/h, as estimated from crash test dummy data, of course, which is not that comforting. At 100km/h, I think the survival chance in an average European car is already less than 10%, and as for 120km/h, we'd already be talking about miracles here (with the exception of racing cars). On the other hand, most Autobahn accidents are not unbraked collisions with standing objects. It could happen if there is a traffic jam or another obstacle, and you are distracted or fall asleep for a few seconds. Or if the brakes fail. Even then it's not nearly the same as hitting a wall unless you're running into a truck (that's bad for the other guy though). Most accidents at high velocity are either colisions with some amount of braking, or loss of vehicle control. I'm not trying to downplay the risks, I personally don't feel comfortable going over 180km/h or so even if there is little traffic. And I think you should go to jail, lose your license and/or pay very high fines for any reckless behavior such as exceeding the speed at which you can safely operate your vehicle, tailgating or overtaking on the right. The habitual look over the shoulder once saved me from a serious accident where I was driving on the middle lane at about 140km/h (lots of 80km/h trucks as usual on the right lane and I don't feel obliged to change lanes several times a minute while there is little other traffic, it's risky) and was overtaken on the right by a car that went barely faster than mine. Mind you the left lane was completely free.

+Kellydoesherthing Ok, I got curious about what the actual percentages are and went to the only website that never lies - Wikipedia. ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autobahn "A 2008 estimate reported that 52% of the autobahn network had only the advisory speed limit, 15% had temporary speed limits due to weather or traffic conditions, and 33% had permanent speed limits." (Exceeding the advisory speed limit of 130km/h can lead to increased liability in case of an accident.) Cheers!

20*C*B*M*18 refers to Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, the three wise kings who gave gifts to newborn Jesus. It is a tradition on Three Kings Day (beginning of January) for Catholic children to go from house to house, bless the house , sing or say a verse and write the CBM and the year (now 2018) onto the door and collect money for charity.

I just read up on it and I also thought its about Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar - but at least the first sources say that this is a common misbelief and it stands for "Christus mansionem benedicat" - "Christus bless this house". The * in 20*C+B+M18 stands for the star that pointed to Jesus' birth place. The + are actually crosses and stand for the trinity "In the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit"

I wish I had seen this before! I went to Germany in August and was completely lost with the train system and the way to buy the tickets, in my country we only have 3 trains and you pay directly to the people at the station so this machines were a bit confusing for me... At the end of the trip I already was able to do everything just fine (mostly?) though it was a surprise the first time. I'm glad that I found your chanel ✨

it´s not a bible verse :D. It´s the name of "Melcheor, Baltasar and Caspar", the name of the three kings that came to bring gifts vor the child christi. And in Germany it´s tradition, that tittle kids, dressed in that theme of the kings "Starsingers" (Sternensänger), mark the bilding, where they sang songs of that, and the people who listen to them, give them some money for cherity, or sweets. And the 17 at the end ist the date of the year, they were there and sang. :D

seems taking a DB-Regional is easy-as long as conductors make announcements along the way.In Midwest regionals youre at the mercy of local conductors who may not call out stops-you rely on other passengers who maybe familiar with terrain-landmarks noting where you are.Rudesheim am Rhein-nice tour you gave of town-very nice overlook-Castles?Love that!This town seems quite like i remember this place is known for something famous-besides that delicious coffee.
