TAKING AN OBSTETRICAL HISTORY USING GTPAL | NCLEX REVIEW

In this video I discuss how to take an obstetrical history on a patient using the GTPAL tool. I define GTPAL and go over some examples of how to find it. In addition I talk about a GP and how that is different than the GTPAL. This is what I like to call OB math, special math problems for this specific patient population. This will be tested on in school, ATI and NCLEX, so it is definitely need to know information.

I do want address the debate about the L. There are some who say that this should not include living children, just live births, because what if they gave birth to a live child and it died from SIDS 2 months later. I didn't even want to bring that sort of thing into this because I don't want to confuse anyone. As an OB nurse this is how we do it in real life so this is what I wanted to show you in this video. This is also how you will be tested on this material on ATI and NCLEX. I hope this clears up any potential confusion. Any questions just let me know. Thank you for watching. :)

I wish you had added a practice question were the woman would have had a loss of pregnancy at term. How would we compute that? Thanks

Just a bit confused about the P-ara_number of pregnancy that is born >20wks live or not. What if. If the baby delivered at 20wks but died? Will you consider it a Para or Abortion?thanks a lot

If the baby was born alive but died shortly after it is still counted in the Para.

@@marjorie7928 oh I see. Yes if it's beyond 20 weeks whether live or a demise/ stillbirth it is still counted in the Para. Think of it in relation to the woman not the baby. G is number of times the uterus has been occupied and P is the number of times she has given birth past 20 weeks. Hope this helps 🙂

The G is the number of times she's been pregnant, so even if she had multiples it's still only 1 pregnancy. Hope that helps.

It's a G3 because she is currently Pregnant ( G1 )than she has twins ( G2) and she has her son making it a total of G3 pregnancies
