I haven't scrapped and ac unit in a while. I have a HVAC school in my area that is happy to evacuate the refrigerant for free. It gives them a few pounds of free freon, and a learning experience

If your scraping something with refrigerant please do your part and have the Freon properly recovered. Your decisions will protect the planet and environment for future generations . (Pin this)

The Freon is very expensive and there are some air conditioning guys that will actually buy it from you or take it out for free They use it and resell it Using it in new installations or for Maintenance of older units

Tom, the short piece where the copper lines meet the aluminum lines...what do you guys classify that as? Cu/Al radiators? I can't get my yards to agree with anything but "breakage".
@iScrapApp3 жыл бұрын
Yes that would be how most scrap yards grade that. Or they may call it #2 copper.

Remember to release refrigerant into the atosmophere is illegal. Also freon hasn't been used since 1986

They do have new refrigerants like R-22 and R410A, true!

R-22 has been around at least since I was in college over 10 years ago

Great video! What bit/ tool do you use to remove the compressor screws?

Don't recall. Every unit is different.

Majority of the time it’s a 1/2”. Because the bolts tend to build up with debris over time I’ve found it’s easier to use a 13mm since it’s a hair bigger and bolt doesn’t get stuck.

About how much can you get for one compressor unit? Assuming it's a good reasonable yard on the east coast
@iScrapApp2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the size and weight.

The large home units if removed from the house would not have any in there anyway Once the unit has been removed from the house the system has been opened up Usually the HVAC guy removed it himself and took the Freon so he can reuse it Small air conditioners and refrigerators usually don’t have Freon in them if they no longer work Most often they stop working when They no longer cool
@iScrapApp3 жыл бұрын
When an HVAC contractor has safely drained the fluids, specific orange stickers are put on the unit. If there are no markings or stickers signaling that, then assume it wasn't done properly.

Hey Xa, valid concern. But we don't accept air conditioning units with the freon still in it 😊

I’m pretty sure you left a whole bunch of illegal Freon out in the air I don’t see any recycle tanks around
@michaelberry18373 жыл бұрын
Hey my friend they won't allow units in their yard with freon in them LOL
@BGTech13 жыл бұрын
They recover the Freon when they disconnect the condenser from the evaporator in the house. The outside unit or condenser is just one part of the system.
