Massive respect for anyone with the nerve to remove the carriage from a Royal machine. I'd bungee jump before I did that. When you said you made a separate tutorial for it I was like "HAHA NO KIDDING"

Lucas has a much better tutorial which I linked in the description. I made one, but made it unlisted because his is just soooo much better!

*EYES WIDE* Ok, now THAT is bravery and can now see WHY this is being uploaded a year later! Brilliant idea to take reference photos as you go! Even reference photos for cleaning and before and after! And I still haven't cleaned mine and it's killing me... might have to wait for a longer stretch off work etc lol Was definitely on the edge of my seat watching this episode Sarah! Also looking forward to seeing it painted! Only thing I was cringing at was your poor jewelry that didn't get removed from your fingers before getting right in there and getting to work on that beast!!! Lol

Reminds me so much if two major automotive projects I took on. First was disassembly of an air-cooled VW Beetle engine. The second was what began as replacement of PCV, plugs, wires, and distributor cap of a Volvo 850 Turbo engine. Your instructions for the typewriter apply almost equally well. Lots of labeled Ziploc baggies and Sharpies are also helpful. The feelings of empowerment that come after such an overhaul and the machine coming back to life are marvelous. It gives you confidence in many areas of life.

Holy cow....I have a Royal 10 that has sat around my house for 3 moves and 30 years. Got it at a yard sale 30 years back. I am not going to fully disassemble it; just disassemble enough to get it clean - it functions. It has a few things it doesn't do so well but I'm getting a couple of missing parts for it and am in the cleanup phase now. This video is great! Maybe I'll get brave if I happen to find another one but I've not seen one since that day back in '94 when I brought this one home for $40....

I’m doing something similar with my royal deluxe. im doing a complete tear down and im gonna clean and mirror polish every single piece of metal with a Dremel tool and lubricate everything with and then im gonna strip the paint down and sand until smooth and then give it a beautiful weathered Patina metal aesthetic to it.

Awesome series. I have an old Underwood for my son for Christmas and he will be doing the same so this is very timely.

I wish you would have done this 1 year earlier so I could benefit from your conclusions while and after disassembling the machine. I'm still in that process and did NOT label every part because at the disassembly of my Optima M12 at one point out of the sudden I had almost all of the type bars coming out at one and disconnecting completely without leaving me the chance to label them. :D So I will have to puzzle them back together someday in the future.

It's not a royal 10, it's a royal SX, first of Royals Segment Shift, if you put a dash of white oil in the mineral spirit it will reduce the spirits action on the paint, the hard part will be not putting it back together but adjusting it , this may be helpfull watch the internet for typewriter tools there is a special tool to adjust the segment lock on the left hand side of the machine, there are also two special benders to adjust the ribbon lift, try to find original design metal ribbon spools.

Great video! Also enjoyed the finale and the color scheme of your restoration. Needing to remove the lower rail on a Royal 10 and can’t find how to successfully do it. Do you have any resources to suggest??
