Growing up my parents were really strict with technology... Only an hour on the weekends, never during the week... But those were the pre-tablet days. They continue to be very strict with my younger brothers, but it is a lot harder since one of them has special needs and would love to spend all day on his ipod touch! They're only guaranteed a half hour a day, and then of they walk 10,000 steps they can get another half hour. I think it works well to have physical activity linked to screen time -- it def keeps them active!

Y’all are going to think this is funny . I told my older teens that they are only allowed online for two hours a day UNLESS they have their own business and they are working . Well ... they taught themselves how to make online stores . I could not even believe it . They are doing well and are meeting with our accountant . LOL . Kids these days !

When you start to limit Noah, you should try using chips (or something else concrete) that represent a certain amount of time so that he can keep track! You could give him 4 at the beginning of each day and he could turn one in for 30 minutes of internet time throughout the day. That way its tangible for him and he can either save time for later or use it in the moment! Obviously could work with the other kids too, but I really think Noah would benefit from that approach. Could even be pieces of Velcro on a strip or chart or something along those lines. Just my initial thought!

Great job! I love that you aren’t having a “knee jerk” reaction and taking all the screen time away at once. What a smart plan, and you are absolutely right that the plan needs to be sustainable! I admire you and will be watching how this works out!

If I'm going to be real- i wish I wasn't allowed on the internet as young as I was (12). It opened a lot of doors to things I shouldn't have known about yet, things I shouldn't have been doing. Even with parent controls and monitoring it's very hard to control what your kids do online. They are finding out new ways to get around locks all the time. If they don't have a device at all they just go to their friend's house and do it. I think you guys are absolutely right. It's not about controlling what your kids do online, but teaching them how to use it safely and responsibly.

I was having the same issue with my kids (with the electronics)...and I totally agree 100% with you on not taking it away completely but having healthy limits. We have week day limits (during the school year) and weekend limits. We set a certain amount of hours for the day and when they used used their allotted times, electronics are done for the day. They can choose how they want to use their time but when it’s up, it’s up. That way they are being limited (parent sets the limits) and they get to be in control on how the time is split. It has worked PERFECTLY 👌🏻 Especially with our 8 year old ASD daughter. She is aware ahead of time how much time she has for the day and gets to visually see how much time she’s used and how much is left. You all are great parents and raising great kids, keep up the good work!!

We do a couple of things with electronics. 1. In the summer, no electronics before lunch time. 2. Delilah needs to have all chores done daily before electronics start. 3. Harrison has to read with me for 3-5 books (depending on length) for one movie or two show episodes. 4. Delilah reads or does math and matches time for electronics. For example, if she does math or reading (or a combo of the two) for 30 minutes, she gets 30 minutes on her iPod.

I'm newer to your channel but I have been binge watching lately!! My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with Autism this past December. I suspected it since she was about 5. She also has ADHD Combined Type, SPD, Anxiety, Tic Disorder, developmental delays, mixed receptive and expressive language disorder, and learning disabilities. Life gets VERY overwhelming, but your videos have been a comfort to me. I can't really explain why. But I just wanted to reach out and say hello, and that I'm so glad I found your channel!

My parents never took away my screen time because whenever we were doing activities as a family I was completely present and there. But also just because online was the only way I could interact with others. I grew up and am fine with putting down my phone for hours at a time but I guess it is different for everyone.

We limit our kids as well. My dad got our 2 oldest iPads for Christmas a couple years ago and we saw right away how addicting they were. We now have a rule sheet up listing what all they need to do before they can have 30 minutes of electronic use. It is difficult, now that I've started KZbin, for them to realize I'm "working" because they see it as fun.

My kids are grown, however I have noticed my great niece and nephew practically living on their devices. I did mention it and got shut down..*shrugs*. For me, I noticed I spent a humongous amount of time on Facebook. I have since deleted it and messanger from my phone . Now I have to go on my PC in order to FB, which isnt convenient, and find I go on for about an hour a day...if that. I now have more time to read, go for a walk, or just DO stuff...I love it and have no intention of getting caught up again!! Love the video length btw...=)

For my kids I let them play a lot of the weather makes it unable to play outside but otherwise Indo have to take it away sometimes. That being said they do play educational and active games like minecraft, and a game where you build airplanes and the app uses physics to see if it will fly, etc. but when they’re able to go outside, they’re outside. :) best of luck to the family!

I am SO happy I found your channel! You seem so real, if that makes sense. My 2 year old was evaluated and needs 3 therapies. I also suspect he has Autism but they told us to see how he does with therapy then worry about that.. But I am just so happy to see your videos about autism and real life. My husband works 2 hours from home (one way) as well and we only have 1 car, so I am stuck at home trying to find ways to entertain my 2 year old & 6 month old! Definitely not easy. 🙃 so Basically, I love your channel! 💕

LOVE the longer videos :) I will watch with interest to see how the technology limiting goes. My little ones have clear boundaries with when and how much screen time they are allowed. But my 15 year old currently has no limits and is too often attached to his phone with his earphones in, playing games or watching KZbin. I need some ideas on what might work with older kids :)

I love any videos! I could watch you guys all day. :) Actually, I did sometimes but now I'm all caught up and have to wait for new videos! I have to say, if ever there was a child who fit the name Liam it is your beautiful red headed little boy. We have electronics issues here also. My oldest also has autism and while we want him to socialize it's hard to limit him a lot because gaming is the one world he can participate and fit in just like anyone else, you know? My son just graduated high school and we are working on getting him into some adult programs but oh my gosh the process is long! Right now he doesn't have a lot to do while we wait so we haven't been limiting him too much.

Internet is both a blessing and a curse. The funny thing is that we're the only generation that didn't have internet growing up while our kids do. I really wonder how they are going to handle it with their own kids later. I also feel screen time should be limited, at the same time I realize every generation romanticizes their own childhood and thinks today's youth are up to no good...it's though for sure.

I don't mind how long or short. We did volunteering and sports. We did family time 1 day during week and a Saturday or Sunday family time. That way the older siblings have fun with the younger ones. Like you said soon they grow up and leave and you miss out on memories. But like I tell my kids it's only 2 days. And if you decide to do family movie night my kids they can't be on phones and that goes to the parents too.God Bless you all.

I don't mind either length of video. :) Any time under 20 minutes I consider fine for a vlog. Heck though, I watch some people's 40 -60 minute weekly vlog comps. Internet life is hard this day in age, but it IS a huge part of our society. We live in a not so nice neighborhood and most of the kids aren't my daughters age (she's 13, 14 in October) so she doesn't get much socialization, nor is it really safe for her to "go outside and play". That being said, because she IS homeschooled too, she doesn't have many friends aside from her internet friends. She does taekwondo 3-4 times a week, and has made a few friends there, but hasn't bonded with anyone enough to get info for hanging out together outside of class. I don't think it's necessarily bad to limit screen time, but there's also the reality that a lot of times it's our kids (especially our homeschool kids) only connection to their friends. My daughters best friend lives in the UK and her favorite boy (her "boyfriend") lives about 5 hours away in PA. They talk every single day. She didn't have a phone until April and she's rarely on it. She will have days where all she does is sit online if I let her, but if I limit it, she pulls out a notebook and draws, or she will read a book. Sometimes she'll ask to play the Switch, but she's not a HUGE gamer person. Now when her friend (from her old school, before she was homeschooled) comes over, that girl is ADDICTED to her phone. I've had to make house rules for her friend because the first time she was over, she literally never put her phone down. She has no regulation at home and is a literal screen zombie. Now she knows when she comes here, she puts her phone on my desk and can check it once an hour. (Which is still, "Like, so mean." lol. My response was "I don't care. If I have to ask you a question six times and still don't get acknowledgement that you heard me, the phone is going away when it's at my house unless I see it's your dad on the screen.") Kids need time away from screens, but it's a hard balance when it's your child's only connection to their friends. If my daughter has trouble self moderating, we do a no screens day (myself included) and find something to do (we might use a screen to find something honestly) but then we go have a park day or whatnot. It's MUCH easier to do in the summer than the winter here (as the winters in Ohio get COLD!) but it's still something we work on. I think all parents struggle with it. Sorry for the novel of a comment. I like to discuss things!

So many times my husband and I have been out to eat somewhere and a family with several kids will sit at a table and the kids will pull out a phone or tablet and look down at it not uttering a word to each other. Unfortunately the parents are doing it as well so they don't speak to each other at all. I see that at work. We have a TV with satellite in our lunchroom and I'm the only one who watches it at lunch because everybody is eating with their heads bowed watching their phones.

I like longer ones when you’re having “adventures” like Boston because there’s a lot of variety. When you’re just daily blogging or having a “sit down” (like this blog) the shorter time is better because no one has much of an attention span these days (you know why). My 12yr old nieces are limited to a set number of hours “screen time” per day unless doing homework but that covers computers, phones, TV & other “devices” too. It works because with 2 of them, they “dob each other in” (tattle?) so no one gets away with breaking the rules for long.

I recently read a book that you might be interested in regarding screen time for kids. The book is called glow kids. It walks you through what is actually happening in the brain of a child that spends extended time on devices. It also talks about how screens can sometimes become addiction for kids and what it does to their overall social and emotional health.

Maggie is on an iPad ban for I don't even know how long (which is basically her only electronic but not a communication device for her) because she broke her first one out of it's super secure box and broke it (and she adores them... she's just super super rough on... everything... ) and the insurance replaced it... and then she broke the new one out of the otter box last week and was about to break it when I found her. So. It is hidden for the indefinite future. And I totally agree that it's a larger issue. I struggle with screen time, especially with our boys, who put up a fight when ever I let them play games and then tell them it's time to be done.

Yes, I know. I try to go work out at a gym 3 times a week, then hang out on my Xbox One X. I also try to keep up with the vlogs on KZbin, too. For 8 years, I never had an internet with unlimited data. My area was mostly satellite and hard limited data internets in our areas. Last year and a half, I finally got DSL Internet in my area. Once again, I could play and socialize on Xbox one more time. I try doing other things in between too.

Hate to break it to you but it's like 100 degrees up here too. The "feels like" temp is 102

Yeah true, it's usually not 100 degrees there lol. Still does get unbearably hot at times though!

I wish I had someone to limit electronics for me. I still live at home but I’m nineteen so my parents feel it’s my responsibility to spend my time wisely. Problem is, I make so many plans of what I want to get done for the day but depression makes doing anything, even something that I know I will enjoy and have fun doing, hard, so I end up in this cycle of zoning into my iPad all day and realizing at night that I’ve wasted another day. Then I feel bad about myself for not spending my time better. I’m trying to break the habit by having planned outings and I think today wasn’t too terrible!

The kids I nanny have limited screen time & this is what their mom does; after every hour they spend outside doing an intentional activity they’re allowed 45 minutes of “screen time” whether that be a tv show, video games, etc. I’m not sure if this would work for your family but I thought I’d try to help give some ideas😁

I'm not as addicted to my phone as most people are, but I NEED to have my phone on me when I go out in case someone needs to reach me! Also, how do you stay confident after eating junk food and drinking soda? My mom is OBSESSED with being thin and "perfect" and feels guilty when she eats even the least bit of junk food!

You guys should look into the Disney circle device I am a teenager who spends a lot of time on my phone and my parents got one to time my apps and I actually like it! Please just look into it and you can thank me later 😂👍🏼

You can also pause the internet on any device from an app on your phone and give rewards!

Omg yes! My mom got this for her house, and she can monitor any phone/ device that connects to the WiFi. You can put a pause on any device from your phone too. Like whatever they’re doing it’ll just pause the screen. So when the “I’ll get off in 5 minutes” happens, you can go “NOPE. It’s going off now”. Pretty great lol
