This was SUCH a great reaction to this song. You guys NAILED IT and really got the entire meaning of the song. Well done! I really like how Mel said both the man and the woman in the song are cocky -- that is such a good observation! 👏

Human League were originally created by musicians Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh on keyboards/synthesizers with Philip Adrian Wright as Director of visuals making slides on a screen behind them. They wanted to hire vocalist Glenn Gregory but he was engaged elsewhere so they got Philip Oakey. They were very electronic and even though they released a few albums didn't sell that much. Later Oakey wanted to play a more commercial style and Ware/Marsh left to create Heaven 17 where they got Gregory as vocalist. Oakey got Joanna Catherell and Susan Ann Sulley on vocals, guitarist Jo Callis and keyboard player Ian Burden and they started creating hit after hit. Oakey and Catherell were a couple for several years. She's the dark haired woman

That's Philip Oakey and Susan Sulley. The current line-up also includes Joanne Catherall. They have like half a dozen bigger hits but I can only remember Human - besides this one of course. Oakey did an album with Giorgio Moroder in '85 and it's got a good song called Together in Electric Dreams.

This was the second line up of the group. The first line up was made up of Phil Oakey the lead singer, Martin Ware and Ian Craig-Marsh who were the musicians , Adrian Wright they were very influential but didn’t have huge hits. The best for this line up was Being Boiled, they split up but had committed to a European tour so Phil and Adrian went out and recruited Susan Sulley and Joanne Catheral. They also got Jo Callis of Rizillos fame and Ian Burden. With Martin Rushent producing they had the hits.

*A very historically-significant song as it's regarded as the start of the Second British Invasion of UK music acts that would dominate the US music charts during the early-mid 1980s. The Second British Invasion was even more successful in the US than the first wave, which included the likes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, so that give you a good idea of the enormous success the second wave had in the 80s.*

The truth of THL isn't that far removed from this song (but without the nastiness!). Almost all members left and became Heaven 17, leaving Phil Oakey with the rights to the name. To avoid being sued for a lot of money by the tour promoter of an upcoming tour, Philip decided to recruit 2 female singers, and literally saw Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall dancing in a nightclub and asked them to join the tour. One of them was only 17 (the other 18) so Phil had to ask her parents for permission for her to go. Weirdly, at the time they both had tickets to see THL on tour, and within a couple of weeks were part of the band! The 3 of them have been the only permanent members of the band since then, and are joint business partners. Phil had an 8 year relationship with Joanne, and later a brief romance with Susan. Although THL had only 3 top 30 hits in the US, they had many more in other parts of the world, including 14 in the UK. They're still touring and making new music; I think they're on tour as I write this. Phil Oakey and THL may be just about to enjoy renewed interest, as a cover of Phil's song with Giorgio Moroder, 'Together In Electric Dreams' is the soundtrack for the Christmas commercial for a major store chain in the UK, which usually guarantees success for the song, and a lot of interest in the original version.

@po52833 жыл бұрын
Both sides in the song our equally messed up, both have huge ego's and are being incredibly selfish in their own way. He has a god complex, can't handle rejection and feels she owes him. She on the other hand believes regardless of him and whatever in roads he provided, was destined to be a star and now that she is; she wants to be on her own and doesn't need him. He feels used and she feels like a possession. Honestly I think they deserve each other, it seems they both equally, have their heads shoved up their own asses!
