wasssupppp JBRO fam !!!! thanks for tuning in. oh man.. this one was a special / sentimental one 😭 .. and i want to thank you for allowing me to share my journey with you. it's been an incredibly humbling and thrilling ride from that vlog posted 2 years ago.. when i was just blabbering my thoughts and somehow it resonated with an audience.. hearing your feedback, encouragements, and shared experiences, and reflecting on both the highs and lows is something i will always cherish about the opportunity to be on this platform and live/grow/learn with you all while we all go through our unique yet oftentimes similar journeys.. lastly, special thanks to our sponsor Grammarly for this episode. Note TW: It’s so nice to hear you advocating more work/life balance. Devoting one’s life to work, money, power to get ahead and set yourself up for some perfect future just leads to burnout and regret. My Dad was one of those people and that future never came to him. He committed suicide after an injury put him on permanent disability. He had made his whole life work and because he had prioritized it he lost all human connection to his family and friends, to the people that could have pulled him from the hole. He was only 45. It’s okay to have drive, to want to get ahead or make money to be comfortable. But we should all remember to take care of ourselves, to find time to step away and get back to the things that make your life full.

I love the change in perspective, John! Not gonna lie, your previous vlogs expressing how much work was your focus and priority were a little concerning. I couldn't help but think, "Does he ever take time for himself?? How is he not burnt out?" Congratulations on the new clinic! Happy to see that all that hard work paid off, and happier to hear that you're figuring out that work-life balance.

Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts John! I have sacrificed my personal life and have been working long long long... hours (as an auditor) too, on average 60+ hours/week, which is not too crazy in comparison with your 100 hours/week though LOL. When I'm getting older, I've started realizing the importance of work life balance, as I do feel that my energy and health are deteriorating. Anyway, your hard work does make a difference, as I can see all happy faces from your young clients and their parents 🥰

This video could not come at the more perfect time. For the past 9 months, I literally have done nothing but work my full time corporate job, and nothing else. Even when my grandmother died earlier this year in June 2021, I was still working the morning of her funeral given I had deadlines. And yet probably because I was so numb and in denial, I continued working. However as the months passed, something in me slowly felt disintegrating. Either my spirit or motivation as I notice so much dust on my guitar. It isn’t until yesterday when I finished a week of working each day from 8am to 10 pm that on friday, I was so exhausted from work, I collapsed and my entire body started shaking. I snapped the next morning and started crying out of nowhere. This is not how I want to live my life at 23. And yet as a first generation American, I struggle with this because as desperately as I want to quit my job, I am scared of taking a break for myself, because I never learned really how to care for myself. My parents and grandparents always taught me the job is more important. But I don’t believe that. And yet here I am, terrified at how much this year has treated me.

What an excitingly endless journey. These days, beyond checking off goals (although graduating and obtaining a license to practice and things are obviously important), I'm so curious as to who I'm becoming through the grind. The character that God's producing in me and hoping it's good fruit in the end. Thank you for recording your thoughts! Definitely cool to resonate with another 20 something in healthcare. Makes me want to document letters to the future :)

The ending hit me hard, actually bawling right now. It’s crazy the timing of this vlog and the content - I remember when you first mentioned starting your own business and your work hustle and I was on a similar page and we hyped each other up. Now, literally past half year I’ve been having the same thoughts you have mentioned in this video. Unfortunately my realization came after the passing of my dad this year. I worked so much and so hard and forgot to take a pause and to appreciate the things around me, and as a 30 year old woman I feel like I missed out on a lot. I still have so much I want to do in my career, but moved by ass out to LIC to be closer to the city so it will be easier to do everything I always wanted to do. As a native New Yorker I’m a city noob lmao. Sometimes it felt like no one understands what I mean, but this video especially the ending statements seriously helped me a lot. Keep up the genuine vibes!

"Work is longer than life". I was once told this phrase by someone close to me. I gave up 10 years of my life to working my hearts out while putting everything else aside. @Dr. John Yoo, I've been watching your videos on this channel & your other channel & I'm seeing a mirror of myself in the life that you lead, esp handling a start-up dental clinic. I've also helped to start up a hospital in my country - Singapore. It resonates so much on my thoughts & reflections 2 years ago where I decided to make time for other things & my health and moved on to work which is less demanding. Your stress tolerance is sure higher than mine. I've landed myself in hospital a couple of times due to high stress. I lost my grandfather last year & I couldn't get to see him for the last time due to work. It's a huge regret which I carry with me forever. I'm happy on your reflections in this vlog. Keep up on the good work!

Thank you for being transparent about your thoughts. Sometimes one tend to get carried away with work commitment and forgets about their surroundings (especially family and friends). Your thoughts definitely gave a new perspective and I thank you for that! Let's do this :D

omg what a fun and lively workplace! You've really cultivated this encouraging (and fun) culture to be around every day (cause work is not fun for anyone..). wow they are really lucky to have a "boss" like you and to see how you exemplify care/compassion for each of your patients/clients! Would've never thought a dentist vlog would be that entertaining tbh HAHA but YES that this is your only life, so make the most of it.(': Happy that you're sharing with your viewers how to value time with people/family/friends/coworkers

Love this! I’m wondering how much finally achieving your goal of being in your own practice is giving you the space to not feel the NEED to work 100 hours any more. Slowing your pace is definitely healthy! Friendships & family need to be nurtured too 💛

Couldn't agree more John. In my experience, I moved from Illinois to Tennessee to appreciate life and slow down a bit. I got my job after my pre - service teaching. And yes, you will constantly critique yourself to be the best for those you serve. So now I get to teach and work on being a semi normal person.

Thank you so much for this vlog! It encourages me and you motivated me so much. I started working as a dental assistant since the end of July. At first it was easy on me but now more hard things come up. I also backed to school so I find it hard to balance work and school and social life. After hearing that you used to work 3 jobs and 100hrs/week during dental residency, I understand now taht it takes lots of effort and time to earn the success 🥰
