Hello Tom. Thanks for a snapshot in to your average day. Yesterday I did my first shift with The Watercress Line. We walked about a mile and a half of track gauging, tightning fittings and greasing points fittings and all moving parts etc. Felt good to be doing something different for a change. I am going to become a full member and try to spend more time there. Good people to crew up with....

Watched someone the other day levelling soil with a telehandler, positioned themselves and then put it in Crab steer and run parallel with the kerb. Appreciate they are a lot of money but that operator on a rubber duck with a tilt rotator working on a road and housing project adding topsoil and finishing off ready for grass seed is an impressive sight and skill. The old Tartan paint, my brother was an apprentice at a paint and body shop in the 1980's with one customer Henry Long Transport running Merc 1625 / 1628's painted bright orange with a Tartan band around the cab. So of course our kid was sent to get the Tartan paint and back again as there is more than one Tartan lol. They also held him down and sprayed his head with the bright orange paint as Beaker from the Muppets. Probably be arrested for assault nowadays if you sprayed an apprentices head with lorry paint while others held them down.

Hi Tom.i would personally say cheers for using your time to make all your videos.in these times many folk are making such videos, But in my uneducated opinion you and your style is one of the best I have had the absolute pleasure in watching.you just come over as a normal everyday guy and you have an honesty about you which I really do like.i hope you can keep finding the time to make more and probably do to your personality your not satisfied to sit still and you keep improving and adding to your already brilliant videos. When I started my career in the electricity game in the 90s I drove a 4x4 Iveco, planting poles and putting up transformers etc. Good times, wish I was still on the tools now.

Good job with the rolling. Good thing to do after is check the ground is level using a spirit level. Now to be sure the spirit level is accurate, best pop to the shops and get a new bubble for it - just to make sure it’s calibrated properly….😂

I can't believe your wife fell for the second prank. I also can hardly believe the storeman said that he had not heard of tartan paint. We tried to be more subtle/less obvious. When a workmate came back from the stores with a bandsaw blade, I flipped it inside out when he was not looking, and told him they'd given him a left hand blade. Other pranks involved MS Word's Auto Correct tool, which was used on the boss's computer so that when he typed his name it kept changing it to 'I'm a big twat'. One of the worst pranks involved a white board. The subject came in to find 'Fred Smith is Country Gent' written on the white board when he immediately tried to wipe off. Unfortunately, some of it was written with permanent marker so the letter 'o' and the last word were erased, but the rest remained. That was a bit cruel, but we liked to think of it as character building. An even worse one was in the very early days of email and Windows 3.1. The mechanics were given email addresses, but all used the same computer at the back of the foreman's office. What one of the mechanics did not know is that the rather rather crude software kept a history of their correspondence in unprotected text files, so everyone in the section knew about a BS he was telling an eastern European lady he was trying to impress, but he had no idea that we knew. This went on for weeks, and little hints were dropped leaving the poor lad wondering how on earth people knew. It did not end well for him. He was acutely embarrassed about the lies he'd been caught out with, and they didn't let him forget it.
