Please visit www.pepphi.org to learn more about the Plant Extinction Prevention Program. It should be noted that we are a project of the University of Hawaii at Manoa with field staff on all the main Hawaiian Islands. We are funded year-to-year by the State of Hawaii DLNR-DOFAW, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and private grants and donations. Due to the current fiscal climate affecting all conservation programs, we're experiencing substantial funding cuts that is impacting our ability to save Hawaii's rarest plants. If you'd like to support our program, please consider a tax-deductible donation to PEPP via the University of Hawaii Foundation: www.uhfoundation.org/pepp Mahalo!

Warms my heart that there are dedicated people who care so much about preserving vanishing species. The world is going too fast and we are missing out on some special animal and plant life disappearing at a rapid rate that future generations will miss out learning some spectacular things from.. :(
@michaellong31777 жыл бұрын
Thank you...That's why we do what we do. Hawaii is so diverse and beautiful and we try our best to keep it that way for future generations to enjoy and out of respect for the species themselves.

I have watched a few of these now, and they are really heavy on scenery and very light on science. It would be helpful to name names instead of just saying repeatedly "rare plants". Fine, how about their names so we can learn more about them or share their names with our students? It would be a welcome addition to the beautiful photography.

Nice work, but why not plant tissue culture?
@michaellong31777 жыл бұрын
Many of his collections, and those of our other team members, are given to laboratories (e.g. the National Tropical Botanical Garden or the UH Manoa Harold L. Lyon Arboretum) to be grown and stored in tissue culture. When suitable habitat is protected from threats such as feral pigs, goats or sheep, then the plants are taken out of storage, grown in rare plant nurseries, and then returned to the wild.

We have several passionate young field botanists who work with Steve and will continue his work should he ever actually stop. Many more want to join the PEPP team, but funding cuts have greatly limited our ability to increase staff. We hope to break through our funding woes and get more talented staff out into the field to save Hawaii's rarest plants. www.pepphi.org
