We surveyed A Formosa Ketch in Sotogrande with osmosis in the rudder post likely you have. The owners refused to have it properly repaired. He brushed it down and filled it with JB Weld. He left Sotogrande and took a right into the Straights of Gibraltar. The shaft broke off just South of Algeria’s. The boat named “Natchez Trace” was towed into Gibraltar. That would have been around 1989. When I left Europe in 2009, the boat had not moved since the day the rudder fell off. Please fix it right, your have put too much time and love into this boat not to. I’ve been retired for 20 years and not kept up with the newer methods of stainless steel repair. There must be a Metallurgist following you that can chime in.

Looks to me like crevasse corrosion of the rudder shaft. This likely means a new rudder, as the rudder shaft is the main structural component of the rudder. There may be a stainless steal plate inside, along with a pair of gussets, or two pair of tangs, that are welded to rudder shaft. The rest is probably foam and fiberglass. Unwelding the rudder shaft from the plate and tangs or gussets might be possible, but is probably not worth the effort.

In my humble opinion you need to add an impact driver and a blow torch to the tool kit. Keep up the great work!

I noticed that when the boat was moved last week, more water came out of keel, so think that now you can get to bottom of keel, it could be possible to drill some small holes in bottom of it. I watched another channel do this with encapsulated keel after they gounded it, it took a few weeks to dry it out.

Great work U 2! Progress is terrific! Glad the rudder came out as the shaft looks pretty "sick". I would suggest that they ex ray or magnetize it to see if its just some bad surface pitting. Lose that in the high seas and it is quite a problem. Perhaps convert that paddle board to a new rudder?? LOL Cheers, rich

God, five weeks of sanding, that must be soul destroying! Well done. Get yourself an impact screwdriver. Bash the end with a hammer, it cams the bit around about a 16th of a turn, and drives it hard into the slot at the same time. They're cheap, and perfect for busting stubborn screws loose, or doing them up really tight.

WD-40 is not particularly effective when used as a rusty bolt penetrate. Use a penetrate oil like PB Blaster or Kroil and those stuck nut/bolts will come apart much easier. Pre-cleaning any of the rusty exposed threads with a wire wheel and heating the bolt with a small propane plumbers torch will also help get them separated.

hot heat wave, but then we are going to get lots of rain, sometimes even hail, and the temperature may at some point get down by 20°C, I personally think it's welcomed, having to sustain some 35°C temperatures, up to 28-30 inside, which temperature you loose all motivation to do anything, this is what is planned where I live, in Isère only a few hundred Km north of where you are, good luck for this next week. For stuck rusted screw, a bite of WD40 and an impact screwdriver does very well the job. If it doesn't move, just hit more and it will move at some point, although it would have probably not worked well for the stuck bolt as the other end was free

1)Sometimes the best way to complete a long task is to stop and do something completely different (paddleboard fix, hardware store bike ride). It can help you think clearly, find solutions and be renewed when you start again. 2)Southern California, USA has similar winds called "Santa Annas". Not so good for fire season..

‘Loving what you two are achieving and loving your positive can-do approach to this project, very refreshing and inspiring and I have absolutely no doubt that we’ll be enjoying your sailing videos on this boat soon enough. It may have been a slip of the tongue but when you replace the screws in the rudder heel pintle you definitely don’t want "brass" screws - you need bronze (or stainless steel). Brass is pretty useless in a marine environment. If the pintle is bronze and it is still OK stick with bronze screws, if you do have to replace it and end up with a stainless steel one then of course use SS screws. That crevice corrosion on the rudder stock is a real kick in the teeth for you, obviously the cathodic protection was never functioning for it so rectifying both the rudder stock and the cathodic protection are going to be interesting jobs for you and I suspect that a lot of viewers will be interested to learn from your experiences in how you go about resolving them, particularly the cathodic protection failure. All the very best you two, you are both inspiring!!!

Hiya. I keep saying brass, I know it's bronze. 🫢 Want to try and keep as much as possible in one metal. The corrosion is a bit annoying, but we've got a new rudder stock. There are no anodes on the boat that could explain a lot. Cheers for watching 😃

Might I suggest a product called Kroil for loosening rusted fasteners? Its WD40 on steroids. Also an adjustable crescent wrench on the square shank of the screwdriver would have helped with the removal of that shaft bracket.

I have seen people using a "bit and brace" (oldskool manual drill) with a flat blade inserted to tighten and loosen flathead screws. apparently you can get a lot of torque on the screws, but at the same time maintaining pressure so that the bit doesn't jump out of the slot. Haven't tried it myself, but have seen other people doing it. Its the sort of thing you'd get for 50p at a car boot sale.

To patch the osmosis blisters, look up the patch diameter, for the depth of blister. You want strength, not cosmetic repair. You really have very little osmosis, compared to some that I've seen hauled up from Florida, in the early 90's. The grinding needed on them, was way worse than that little pit you showed. Best wishes from Canada.

buy an impact driver the old hit with hammer type usually come with 4 driver bits the largest flat driver is perfect for what you will be faced with on a boat . because you smack it with a hammer it tends not to chew the slots like a screw driver. They are reasonable cheap as tools go. from a car tools place invaluable for taking anything apart. much better than power tools. I can send you a pic if you need

Why oh why did you remove the P bracket! There will need to be heaps of alignment issues if you do not get the installation and alignment right. They will include stern baring wear and heating, stern gland leaking and P bracket bearing wear and overheating.

You really should wait a bit longer after grinding out that osmosis for it to dry , it needs repeatedly washing over a few weeks to make sure all the blister juice is out and then leave it few months before filling them , you really need to get someone with moisture meter to test that keel before re laminating , a wet hull can be left ashore for 20 years and it won’t ever dry unless you take the gelcote off and even then it still takes long time to get to level of dryness to get good bond with the new epoxy
@SailingSeabird
@SailingSeabird 10 ай бұрын
No real osmosis blisters just many pin holes and bits of fibreglass that need attention. The keel is our main concern, but it will be fine. We've started airing it out and with underwater epoxy I'm sure we'll get it fixed. Only an issue in cold climates. Cheers for watching 😃

Not sure what your thoughts are for the brass bolts stuck in the bracket and rudder post, You could maybe drill them out Pilot hood and work your way through the size of drill bit or Perhaps you could drill and tap a thread to accept a bolt and try unscrewing each brass piece After a proper soaking in a penetrating spray. It would likely be easier doing either of those than having to tap larger holes. Anyway great progress on the hull and a huge relief after all the sanding. Nice one

G’day Stu and Marina chuffed the sanding is done . . . Almost. Five weeks of sanding would have driven me around the twist. But good on you for persevering. No option but to I guess. Stu when you put the Rudder assist and the prop shaft “P” bracket back in please use some stainless steel Nylock nuts to ensure they don’t wiggle loose. Especially the “P” bracket. With regard to the “P” bracket I would also get a 10mm (3/8”) stainless plate bent up to fit snugly in the inside to give it more area to support it from the inside. Those two rectangle plates are as useless as a bull with boobs. That original install was not good workmanship from the boat builder in my opinion. However I am a heavy mining equipment mechanic snd not a boat builder so I could be way off the mark. That is just my input. I know you are no fool and will do what’s best. Great progress guys very impressed indeed with the achievements. Marina great job with the window and as always superb content and editing. Look forward to next weeks look in. Take care guys.
