Taking Pelargonium Cuttings (Zonal And Ivy Leaved Geranium)

In order to save My Pelargoniums ( Zonal And Ivy Leaved Geraniums) from any more hard frosts and to ensure I have a good number of plants for next summer. I take cuttings from my Zonal geranium and my trailing/ Ivy leaved geranium. They will take a few weeks to take root, but by summertime I should have a good selection of plants for planting up my balcony.

Great video. I have followed this today and got several geranium cuttings. Have you ever tried to take a climbing hydrangea cutting? I have a harwood cutting in compost just now but now sure it’s doing anything. Thanks

I've not personally tried with climbing hydrangea, but they are usually very successful because they naturally want to grow roots along their stems as it's how they stick to surfaces. You won't notice any growth over winter, but they should be very slowly growing new roots underground, then in spring you should notice new leaves starting to appear.

No, in most cases rooting powder is not needed, although it can speed up the rooting process and reduce rot.

This is a very helpful video! I have watched several different ones and it appears a lot of folks prefer water propagation - may I ask why you chose to put in soil to root? Also, I've seen folks use rooting powder, honey, or vitamin C solution to dip the tip in to promote root growth if placing directly in soil. Thoughts? I have a pelargonium that's in the ground outside but with fall coming I want to save some of it for next year...

Would you cut back this far every year? I have a monster of trailing. I'd be afraid it would shock her. Her color is magnificent im going to try cuttings. Im a zone 9, warm, California. I don't think we need to go back that far. I'd love to see your plants the following spring...

Why are your plants in little pots inside the bigger pots???

They are felt grow plugs which would have been used by the plant nursery to make repotting easier.

Yes, I used to grow them as houseplants in the past, but now I have no space inside I grow them on my balcony. They do very well inside especially if you give them enough light.

I really recommend this, too. Mine do great over winter, in a fairly cool south-facing room (we don't heat it) in zone 8. They flower all winter.

Cab you repot them next to the original one, in he same pot? So they are more abundant and look better?

I could do, but the plants grow best if they have enough space so I potted them all up into new pots. The original parent plants look small after pruning but they will grow quickly and soon fill their pots again.

Hi I put my geranium in the living room in winter where was no sunlight. Now all the leaves has fall off and stem doesn't green anymore. Should I believe that my plant has dead.many thanks shall I just for summer

If the stems are brown then its probably dead, plants cannot survive without sunshine for more than a few days unless they are kept in low temperatures. Next year keep it in a sunny location, or if you are going to store it some where dark make sure its below 5C but not below 0C.

Hi can you show cutting on lemon secent geranium ?you know the leaves with nice waves sides and nice smell The best quickest way thanks and for the fly gnats I use sticky fly taps that's really helps and use normal soap water and water the plants kind of helps thank you

Unfortunately I don't have any lemon scented geraniums, but the technique is the same. I think I will set up some traps to take care of the flies either fly paper or vinegar.

58 North I have some gnats flying around my trees how can you get rid of them ?

They are a little tricky to get rid of, but make sure the top layer of the soil/compost is allowed to dry out, cover the soil with gravel or some other type of mulch to stop them from laying their eggs in the soil and you can also use traps. Either sticky fly paper or containers of wine or vinegar which the flies are attracted to and then drown in.

Gardening at 58 North Cool I'm using sticky paper thanks . I think I have a cutting of a crussula jade decent size I put it in soil it's been about 3 weeks how long does it take to root ?

It should be starting to grow roots already as they only take about two weeks to start. But it takes about a month or two before they develop a good sized root system.
