That part of the city has been a homeless slum since I was a little kid more than 50 years ago. They didn't have a lot of tents up back then. Folks just laid down on the sidewalk. But this mass of homelessness isn't exactly a new phenomenon in downtown L.A. The real sleaze was on 5th street. Living on that street was referred to as being "On the nickel."

Until recently the city couldn't simply remove people from the sidewalk. They have been prevented by a court order. It's a little different now. The judge gave the city more leeway because there are more places and services available now to house and help these people.

Utter bullshit. Research homelessness in Skid Row and you'll see similar number reaching back to the 1930s, way before NGOs. The problem is with America's political and economic system of hyper capitalism. What will solve this is if Americans pay higher taxes and that money goes to social safety nets that actually work. The problem is greed and wealth hoarding.

@@DanielMarsLifendeed. Same goes for any street West of Spring street not that far away either. In fact you can see them constructing a large building in the video. Development is happening all over DTLA. And if you go a few blocks in the other direction you have the Arts District which is just South of the Little Tokyo area. Very drastic differences. BTW, if you decide to revisit DTLA, it would be interesting if you walked from the good areas of DTLA to the ones where the homeless congregate. People not familiar with DTLA would be very surprised how quickly the neighborhood changes. If you do revisit this area try and get video equipment that is easily disguised and wear clothes that are not new but comfortable and loose. Comfortable but not expensive shoes too. You want to blend in all the areas you video.

I already donate; its called taxes, which city, state & Federal misallocate, twisting incencites, paying people to buy drugs & not work. For the small % that are not there willfully, may God bless you & give you the incentive to bring yourself out of dysfunction & stop destroying our cities.

Can you believe that Skid Row was established by city officials in 1976 as an unofficial "containment zone", where shelters and services for homeless people would be tolerated? Los Angeles politicians logic for for 47 years.

Its not that bad... lol, people make it look like a big deal. If it was, Skid row wouldnt exist by now, they would of darwin themselves out a long time ago due to constant killing. American homeless are lucky, cause its like a luxury in the US, if this was any other poor conservative country, they would of been dead by now; they even mention it themselves, why work, when everything is free. Lot of random people out in the public, kinda shows how safe it is; they're just basically 2nd class citizens without homes, some of which don't want them, as it requires responsibility, they also give give out "free" housing, which they don't want.

Weird thing is about skid row, it’s a good mix of all ethnicities. If you start to think it’s heavier on one side of race, pop ina couple tents and you’ll see. It’s a sign of economic and not racism. Weird you see white guys walking the playin America lol! Is it that one guy that looks like he’s almost going to die from EVERY SUNGLE PERSON he passes but ultimately gets a hand out and some good conversation?

Socialism doesn't solve social problems. If money solved problems the United States should be a Utopian Paradise, as the richest country in human history. Human cooperation, interest, concern, hard work and genuine desire to improve one's life, that's what creates paradise and solves problems. These people have all given up. The living dead. Howard Hughes slept in a gutter too.

@@marcoAKAjoe I don't think you fully understand how many drug dealers there are across the country. There isn't enough jails to put them all inside. In the case of Skid Row, if you start a crackdown and move them on, they'll just pop up somewhere else. Did you know there are streets on Skid Row that are "owned" by local gangs?

@@FlyingCircusAct how about first getting new politicians first- people without atrocious agendas- it’s clearly failed miserably. Get politicians with REALISTIC ideas and solutions. Next, shut the borders and stop the flow of poison easily being spread by cartels. Then, take the billions being spent to give illegals free everything and use it to help these people get off drugs and give them proper housing and/or mental health facilities. Next, allow the police to do their jobs. That’s a start.

@@FlyingCircusActLock up the criminals, kick crackheads that are pretending to be mentally ill out of the programs so genuinely mentally ill people can get help without being swarmed by crackheads that enjoy living outdoors. Hire intelligent case managers instead of dumb diversity hires. Be honest about things like the effect single mothers have on the mental well-being of their children (statistically speaking). Cut off big pharma's grip on mental health institutions because they make it so all these companies do is put people on medications that don't work and then act like they've fixed the problem when they haven't. Stop voting for democrats that ignore crime and failing policies. Those are a few suggestions off the top of my head and I should know because I live in skid row and see the corruption and incompetency first hand.
