For nearly 40 years, the supersonic Tornado attack bomber has been at the heart of the RAF’s operations, from the Cold War to current missions over Iraq and Syria.
The jet is due to come out of service next year and as the RAF celebrates its centenary, the Today programme's Sarah Montague was taken for a flight by Wing Commander James Heeps.

I was in Oman during the 1st gulf war. I remember standing with my dad Seeb and watching 2 tornados take off during the night with a deafening sound and full after burner, it was an amazing sight. The tornado is a marvel of engineering.

I was lucky to be in the same rear seat in 1990, as a mechanic. The squadron I was proudly on, gave some of their ground crew who was leaving the rare opportunity of flying in an aircraft which at the time was the best we had. Happy birthday Royal Air Force!

Fantastic video - glad the pilot is on our side. So calm handling the jet throughout the journey as well as providing a running commentary.

I am rather depressed at the limited knowledge of so many of the moaners in these comments, with a great knowledge base accessible to everyone online. Firstly, it's a commercial 360 camera mounted inside the rear cockpit, a camera that you can buy at any computer shop, it's not standard RAF equipment. There is very limited space inside a combat aircraft, that "thing in front" Istan, is a Martin Baker seat - they are not designed so that you can "have a good view", Insan, Zesta, they are designed to save your life. The rear seat is (usually) for the Nav/Weapons officer and he has all his important instruments right in front of him...he doesn't need to see "out the front" :) Debbie, you are inside, with most of the noise going straight out the back. Most noise comes to you through the airframe itself but, yes, it's quieter inside than you would think. Kevin, yes, it's obsolete. That's why they allow a fairly high resolution camera on a 360 degree mount in the cockpit. John Doe, Justin Baldwin, Brian Cullen, it's a 360 KZbin view...learn how to move the camera view in KZbin.

As 617 Sqn and TTTE ex-groundcrew on the GR1, this is the best video I've ever seen of a flight even though it was a 9 Sqn aircraft 🙂. The interactive camera is excellent. Sadly, I never got a trip in one before I left and even sadder is that they no longer grace our skies. I certainly miss them 😥

All aircraft become obsolete as technology advances. A modern mobile phone has more computer power than the main computer on Tornado, but the same applies to the computer on the Apollo spacecraft. By their very nature most aircraft are almost obsolete when they come into service as they take so long to develop, the original MRCA had a 32 kByte memory main computer, this was upgraded prior to delivery to a 64 kByte computer. The GR1 was then upgraded in service to GR4; including the provision of GPS based navigation additional to the Inertial Navigation system, GPS didn’t exist when Tornado was developed.
