Reno: Where Will the Air Races Go?

Good news here! I have never been to a RENO AIR RACE in my life and alway wanted too. I teared up when i heard the air races were over, done, ending! Now I will never get to experience an Air Race event. 😢 Please announce New Location as so as possible so i can Plan on being at the new location at the Frist event!🤠

I predict it will end up in Wendover NV / UT, right next to The Bonneville Salt Flats, land speed records location. A perfect large airport and suitable terrain adjacent to it just west of the salt flats by a couple miles, similar terrain to the Reno location. Very, very long multiple runways and some additional older ones could be brought back to life. This airport even has a great history from WW2.

​​@@TakingOffyes, hotels, casinos and SLC nearest hotels are about 100 miles or so away and freeway the whole way. If more hotel space is needed in Wendover, there is plenty of room to do it too.

The overflow could be flown over from SLC or even better efficiency no TSA etc. From Tooele, KOGD or South Valley, and Provo (TSA), long runways large groups, 20 minute flight, to Wendover. I still say Wendover is a viable option with plenty of space for viewing and a mountainous backdrop to the west, south and north and big open valley shrubbed areas, all west of the salt flats, part of it could also be over the salt flats with an emergency landing area there too, in some areas the salt is plenty strong for landing.

Im sure this could stimulate additional hotel construction in Wendover, even temporary modular housing each year.

Thanks so much for sharing. Nice interview. Nice to know the air races will live on somehow. What were the Reno Tahoe Airport authority thinking? So much unbridled development in some areas, California has a lot of the same ethos, but imo the action is hasty and not well thought out. The good news is the possibility of the event to be shared, the circuit. I always wanted to go to the Reno Air Races but was never quite able to make it. Maybe I'll have better luck with the "new". Look into DOUBLE EAGLE Airport in ALBUQUERQUE, NM. It's close enough to the City for the spectators and far enough from developement. About the same elevation as RENO. Biggest thing, LOTS OF MOTEL ROOMS and GREAT RESTURANTS!

Smaller events or having 3 events a year for warbirds would need to have a huge purse. No way it will work at current purse. Guys can't even break even in warbird class if they win. The cost would need to quadruple

Dan my Nickel in the Grass would be Wendover plenty of room Previously the Jets were held there & it IS the home of the fastest Cars trucks & Bikes yes as with ALL the choices, they will need more "Inner structure"

I could be wrong but most spectators come to see the highly modified Unlimited's if they don't come back not many spectators will show. Those bleachers looked pretty empty this year weren't they? and the prior years too.No matter where the RAR association winds up it won't be like having a city like Reno to go to every nite to have fun. Reno Stead Airport was a perfect location and if they couldn't continue and make it work there, where then? I believe this is a bygone era one for the record books and memories of the way it was. Sadly all the tragedies that has taken far too many are part of those memories too...blue sky's to all.

I was there for 4 days and all of those days had record breaking crowds. The grandstands were packed on both Saturday and Sunday. I am glad I bought my merch, mainly shirts, on Friday morning because they were running low on inventory even then. Saturday they were sold out. I have fun watching all of the classes of airplanes. It would be nice to have the Unlimited class even as a static display but I would attend even without the Unlimiteds there. There are 6 other classes of airplanes.

OH, nobody on the ground was hurt so let's just move on. Pathetic attitude that eill not address the problems.

@@donallan6396the thought is that the new venue will have ample space where NONE of the operations will be over residential areas, and the course can be refined to make safer racing overall. Both of these things could never change at Stead, but there’s a new opportunity to make racing safer for everyone involved.

My enthusiasm left quite a few years ago for 2 reasons the crash of Galloping Ghost and the horror of spectators being killed and injured. The lack of the highly modified unlimited's they've all disappeared. The last few years the speeds dropped more than 100mph and became not much more than parade laps around the course. The end started 10 years ago.

Playing coy about the location is not good for planners. If you don't have a viable plan say so. People have to be able to plan ahead. The race fans and the crews also. We got nothing from this. Moving on. I vote for a three or more part run up and a X-Country portion leading to a final in Pahrump.

There are a number of locations with adequate infrastructure vying for the 2024 event. I suspect they will announce their finalized choice at this last Reno event.

I worked the Phoenix 500 air races on a tow crew. Town has impede upon the area as well. So that area will not work either.
