Only real democratic republics use the word 民國 such as 中華民國 (Taiwan), 大韓民國 (South Korea). This is because republic means "belongs to the people". I've heard that even the word 文化 also borrowed from Japanese kanji, right? Westernization in Meiji era took place before China's Qing. Thank you so much for your very nice and valuable contents. In the earliest days if PRC, we considered ourselves a successor of the first two republics (in fact we consider ourselves successors of the Qing dynasty, if you are an American that had little experience with civilizational states where you imagine every national entity is merely an abstraction of some political/ideological movement, this might be hard for you to understand, regardless bare with me), and our bills were printed with 中華民國 (short for 中華人民共和國), this was soon changed because old veterans didn't like it
