For the month of the Mawlid (celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) this year, I will be uploading some of my favourite and/or underrated renditions of Tala al-Badru Alayna.
This version is recited by Mahmoud al-Sayyad and his nasheed group during a mawlid gathering in 2011, in the city of al-Kiswah, Syria.
¹ The Prophet Muhammad, whose father died shortly before he was born, and mother when he was 6 years old
² This verse and the one after it together make up a short qasidah (classical Arabic poem) written by Hassan bin Thabit, the sahabi (companion of the Prophet, pl. Sahabah), which make it one of the earliest qasidahs written in praise of the Prophet Muhammad, and roughly as old as Tala al-Badru Alayna itself
³ These verses were recited to welcome the Prophet Muhammad as he entered Madinah
⁴ Literally meaning "chosen one" i.e. by God, it is often commonly used as an alternative name for the Prophet
⁵ Implying a metaphor of the Muslim community as a ship which the Prophet captains and navigates to success
⁶ Referring to the Isra and Mi'raj, the two parts of the miraculous night journey during which God summoned Prophet Muhammad to the heavens with Jibril (Gabriel) serving as his guide: en.wikipedia.o...
⁷ A title of the Prophet Muhammad, referring to his rank as the final prophet sent by God to humanity (i.e. sealing the way for any further prophets to come)
⁸ A chapter in the Qur'an named after its first verse, which is also one of the Qur'anic muqatta'at (mysterious letters). It is widely considered to be an alternative name of the Prophet Muhammad, possibly because the following verses directly address him.
Tala al-Badru 'Alayna is considered to be the first nasheed (sung poetry) in Islamic history. To the best of my knowledge only the first two verses were actually recited to welcome the Prophet to Madinah. The verse beginning أيها المبعوث فينا, although just as famous nowadays, was likely added many years later, and over the years it has become tradition for poets to extend the qasidah (classical Arabic poem) with additional verses, either taken from other qasidahs or written by themselves.
In addition, while it is commonly believed to have been recited to welcome the Prophet to Madinah after the Hijra (migration from Makkah to Madinah), many scholars believe that it is more likely to have been recited on his return to Madinah from the expedition of Tabuk.
