He called himself that but was very basically a man wallowing in debauchery. This is a romanticised depiction of two lost existences, hers was enforced, his was chosen. Don't care this with a 20th / 21st century mindset.

The woman NEVER had a choice and blamed herself for what others did to her, she wasn't being edgy but permanently suffering. The man wasn't goth, he simply hid his immortality behind religion. To her, he was a comfort, though.

This poor woman lived a very traumatic life. First her parents, then her sister, being sold into the pleasure life…. There are many children who have experienced tragic loss and end up blaming themselves, even though what happened was beyond their power. Thankfully, with guidance from Ikkyū and seeing her brother, she was finally able to find peace. ❤

I love a lot of these stories but this one has got to be my new favorite. Ikkyu reminds me of a Heyoka or "Sacred Clown" from Lakota traditions. Basically a person who is wise but uses irony, chaos and laughs to show wisdom. Would love to see what a real Jigoku kimono looks like.

I love the Hozuki depiction of her, which places her as a kind of celebrity figure because she basically only appears once a year... To turn in paperwork. Yeah Hell in Hozuki no Reitetsu is a bureaucracy. They also make a gag about her kimono, since for someone who is enlightened, she continues to wear more elaborate kimonos, much to the chagrin of the main character, since it delays the paperwork's delivery.

It's my little headcanon that Jigoku's bones naturally burned hotter than the flames of hell when set alight; conjuring up images of pure white flames; akin to starlight, that burned so hot they rendered her remains into ash as fine as silk

Learning about Meat Monk’s mystical embellishments to her story was cool, and I get how facts and myths get blurred over time, but (I’ve heard) that she was a phenomenal artist on her own: I’d like to hear more about her writing, trendsetting, the torture scence kimonos, the “bride to the king of hell” stuff. Would be really cool to see more content on what she achieved on her own.
