A person could have watched every episode of AGT from the beginning and not find a dance group as good as Avantgardey. They are an absolute "treat" for the eyes. One must watch them over and over just to see things that one didn't see the first time.

It's hard to overstate how amazing this dance is. This song is called IDOL by YOASOBI. It's the opening theme to a complex, dense anime series called Oshi no Ko, which was a smash hit when it was first released. YOASOBI is known for their music that is lyrically and musically dense as well - the composer, Ayase, usually writes his songs based on full short stories. This song, IDOL, is no exception. It's based on a short story prequel written for the anime series. Oshi no Ko, and IDOL, are about the idol industry in Japan. It's about how it manufactures endless cute girls who pander and shape themselves to win the attention and love of the audience. Their habit of all looking identical really drives home this theme. If you know the lyrics of the song, everything they do matches. The first lines are, "what do you like? What is your favorite book?" and if you look, the girls in the middle of the traveling group are miming eating, and then flapping their arms open to mimic opening a book. When they make the star shape, it's also in direct reference to the lyrics. When they do the rhythmic dance movements at 1:00, this is something called wotage, which are stylized movements that fans in Japan do to cheer on their favorite Idol girls. Right after this, you can hear "Ai" - meaning love - in the lyrics, and at that moment the two girls in the center shape their arms into a heart. Their final pose has each girl framing their eyes with their hands - this is a famous pose from a main character of the anime, but also it reinforces the auditory pun of how "Ai" and "Eye" sound the same, which is something that the anime itself also uses as a major theme. Every single movement captures something in the song like this. This is just truly masterful choreography that captures the spirit of the anime, the spirit of the song, the spirit of the authors and the composer, and adds their own special flair too. "- Because they did not know when their interview video would end and because the sound levels in the hall were so high, the group totally missed the opening cue to IDOL in the semifinals (they were supposed to stand and start walking at the same time, but the rear rows stood up first and panicked upon seeing the girls in front of them not moving). Everyone in the group thought they had made a catastrophic failure and were barely able to compose themselves to finish the routine. Backstage, after their performance, the group was crying inconsolably while the choreographer (devastated herself) had to console them. But when the KZbin video aired, they found out that even after the missed cue, they synced up fine to make it look like a proper staggered start, and that nobody in the comments recognized the mistake."
