Do you know why it looks the way it does? Meaning, the weird filter or whatever they're using that makes it look blotchy, especially in the shots showing the crowd? It's quite distracting, imo - was this really a creative choice they made?

A bit late to reply, but I have read a few theories, but the easiest for me to believe is that Corrino Films fucked it up. There was some serious accusations against the company and they eventually filed bankruptcy. I have read a theory that they also lost original quality footage, and had only low resolution to use. Another one is that the cameras were too different from each other. In both cases as a result they would try to hide it - which might be why we have such result here. Matt Bellamy himself has said on Twitter that this film has went down a "rabbit hole" in terms of post effects. It took two years to announce this film. Anyway I will leave you with the bit I wrote on DWT Musewiki page which is quite interesting about Corrino films: "On August 16th, 2017, Bellamy says that it has "gone down a post FX rabbit hole".[21] This is repeated again on December 10th, 2017. [22] It is possible that Corrino Films announced bankruptcy[23] on June 6th, 2018 might have something to do with the increased delay of the release in the past. There are also accusations against former chair-man of Corrino Films about punishable behavior in U.S. which includes hiring prostitutes and using them in their corporate apartment countless times, revealing confidential information about artists to said prostitutes, lying about his position in company to them, possibly using company's money to pay for prostitutes, as well as sexual intimidation against a lower rank employee.[24]"
