Hey man! Interesting you picked up on Hot Fuzz. You’re right it’s R-rated. But it’s also a fantastic commentary on small-town/countryside mystery weirdness in the UK. There may well be other options, but this one felt like something “fun” a reader might check out. I’d say that the core mystery would be a perfect Tales from the Loop game, if you removed the gunplay.

Reckon I'm a bit more Kes mixed with a bit of Happy Valley for inspiration, but I'm a miserable, old man, Northerner - lol. Where I am, I have at least four 'secret' US bases dripping with ordnance and there's not many farmers without a shotgun or two, but (agreed) Hot Fuzz was definitely leaning into a type for comic effect. Great movie!

Cheers for the review! Seems a shame the premise is a bit predictable and hackneyed. Even so, it looks like a good foundation to use for some heavy GM additions and prep. Any kind of secluded rural community could probably easily stand-in for East Anglia. Idaho or Kansas might make a great US analogue. The idea that MAFF could be useful is probably the biggest fantasy in this adventure! Very funny that you're meant to watch Hot Fuzz (BTW that movie is set in the South West of England - opposite side to this adventure - but rural is rural and swans are angry everywhere 😂). If Hot Fuzz is research, then watching Alan Partridge and listening to The Darkness should be a must!

Absolutely right about Hot Fuzz! Just an hour away in the UK you’ll find a very different culture. But a swan’s a swan as you say. :) Where you say predictable and hackneyed, I say “leaning into the premise and established tropes to fulfil contemporary media fantasies” - But absolutely take the book in your own direction! There’s plenty of room for you and your players to make it something that fits your needs more.

@@OzMills Yeah, totally agree! It's a good idea to have a well trodden path for the plot so you can add the madness as GM, or (what usually happens) have an easier time of pulling the plot back in line - without looking like a railroad - when your players unearth some crazy you could have never planned for! Good to see more of us Limeys in the Gaming Gang 😁👍
